Volatile flavour components of ocimum basilicum var. hispidum (lam.) Chiov.

1991

The volatile components obtained by steam-distillation ofOcimum basilicum var. hispidum (Lam.) Chiov. (Labiatae) were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography—mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 21 compounds, representing ca 90% of the total oil, were identified. The identity of the main component (82%), dihydrotagetone, was confirmed by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. This is the first report of this compound in the genus Ocimum.

Determination of 60 Migrant Substances in Plastic Food Contact Materials by Vortex-Assisted Liquid-Liquid Extraction and GC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS

2021

A GC-HRMS analytical method for the determination of 60 migrant substances, including aldehydes, ketones, phthalates and other plasticizers, phenol derivatives, acrylates, and methacrylates, in plastic food contact materials (FCM) has been developed and validated. The proposed method includes migration tests, according to Commission Regulation (EU) 10/2011, using four food simulants (A, B, C, and D1), followed by vortex-assisted liquid–liquid extraction (VA-LLE) and GC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS analysis in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode, with a resolving power of 30,000 FWHM and a mass accuracy ≤5 ppm. The method was validated, showing satisfactory linearity (R2 ≥ 0.98 from 40 to 400 …

Mesoporous silica microparticles gated with a bulky azo derivative for the controlled release of dyes/drugs in colon.

2018

[EN] Mesoporous silica microparticles were prepared, loaded with the dye safranin O (M-Saf) or with the drug budesonide (M-Bud) and capped by the grafting of a bulky azo derivative. Cargo release from M-Saf at different pH values (mimicking those found in the gastrointestinal tract) in the absence or presence of sodium dithionite (a reducing agent mimicking azoreductase enzyme present in the colon) was tested. Negligible safranin O release was observed at pH 6.8 and 4.5, whereas a moderate delivery at pH 1.2 was noted and attributed to the hydrolysis of the urea bond that linked the azo derivative onto the external surface of the inorganic scaffold. Moreover, a marked release was observed w…

Incorporation of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)-derived nanoporous carbons in methacrylate polymeric monoliths for capillary electrochromatog…

2017

A series of metal organic frameworks-derived nanoporous carbons originating from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) crystals as precursors have been prepared via varying the preparation conditions. The ZIF-8-derived carbons were subsequently admixed in the methacrylate monomers containing polymerization mixtures and polymerized to obtain monolithic columns for capillary electrochromatography (CEC). The effect of particle size and content of the ZIF-8-derived carbon materials in the polymerization mixture on the performance of the hybrid monolithic columns was investigated in detail. The resulting composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Using short time UV-ini…

Boronate affinity sorbents based on thiol-functionalized polysiloxane-polymethacrylate composite materials in syringe format for selective extraction…

2021

Abstract In this work, two novel boronate affinity monolithic materials able to extract glycopeptides within a polypropylene syringe are described and compared. The first material was synthesized from glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-based monoliths modified with poly-3-mercaptopropyl-methylsiloxane (PMPMS) followed by attachment of 4-vinylphenylboronic acid (VPBA) via thiol-ene click reaction. The second material was prepared by using gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-modified monoliths as substrate followed by subsequent attachment of PMPMS and VPBA. The resulting materials were used as sorbents for solid-phase extraction (SPE) to selectively preconcentrate glycopeptides from horseradish peroxidase (HR…

The effect of the pore structure and zeta potential of porous polymer monoliths on separation performance in ion-exchange mode.

2007

Most often, in bioseparations involving charged macromolecules, the chromatographic systems have low Reynolds and high Peclet numbers. For such systems, an expression is developed and presented in this work for evaluating the throughput in polymeric monoliths where ion-exchange adsorption occurs, as a function of (i) the pressure drop along the length of the monolith, (ii) the functional form and width of the throughpore-size distribution of the monolith, and (iii) the magnitude of the zeta potential on the surface of the throughpores of the monolith. Gaussian and log-normal throughpore-size distributions whose mean throughpore-size and standard deviation values are based on experimentally …

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) in Volcano island (Aeolian archipelago) mud utilized for therapeutic purpose

2007

This paper examines the possible presence, distribution, nature and sources of 18 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) as constituents of the mud pools collected in Vulcano Aeolian Island. PAH are important from environmental and toxicological point of view. Analysis was performed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in selected ion monitoring (SIM). The total concentration of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons ranged from 112 to 154 μ g/Kg of dry matrix. The volcanic mud, used for therapeutic purposes, are moderately contaminated.

Chemical composition of the essential oil from Pulicaria vulgaris var. graeca (Sch.-Bip.) Fiori (Asteraceae) growing wild in Sicily and its antimicro…

2015

In this study the chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Pulicaria vulgaris var. graeca (Sch.-Bip.) Fiori collected in Sicily was evaluated by GC and GC–MS. The main components of P. vulgaris var. graeca oil were hexadecanoic acid (21.7%), β-caryophyllene (14.3%) and geranyl propionate (8.2%). The comparison with other studied oils of genus Pulicaria is discussed. Antibacterial activity against several bacteria, including some ones infesting historical art craft, was also determined.
