Protonation of the Biliverdin IXα Chromophore in the Red and Far-Red Photoactive States of a Bacteriophytochrome
2019
The tetrapyrrole chromophore biliverdin IXα (BV) in the bacteriophytochrome from Deinococcus radiodurans (DrBphP) is usually assumed to be fully protonated, but this assumption has not been systematically validated by experiments or extensive computations. Here, we use force field molecular dynamics simulations and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations with density functional theory and XMCQDPT2 methods to investigate the effect of the five most probable protonation forms of BV on structural stability, binding pocket interactions, and absorption spectra in the two photochromic states of DrBphP. While agreement with X-ray structural data and measured UV/vis spectra suggest that …
Long-Lived Electronic Coherence of Iodine in the Condensed Phase: Sharp Zero-Phonon Lines in the B↔X Absorption and Emission of I2 in Solid Xe
2015
Our study of B←X absorption of molecular iodine (I2) isolated in a low-temperature crystalline xenon has revealed an exceptionally long-lived electronic coherence in condensed phase conditions. The visible absorption spectrum shows prominent vibronic structure in the form of zero-phonon lines (ZPLs) and phonon side bands (PSBs). The resolved spectrum implies weak interaction of the chromophore to the lattice degrees of freedom. The coherence extends past the vibrational period of the excited state molecule, unlike that observed in any condensed phase environment for I2 so far. The ZP transitions from the relaxing B-state populations were resolved in the hot luminescence when the 532 nm lase…
Water-Insoluble Organics Dominate Brown Carbon in Wintertime Urban Aerosol of China: Chemical Characteristics and Optical Properties.
2020
The chromophores responsible for light absorption in atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) are not well characterized, which hinders our understanding of BrC chemistry, the links with optical properties, and accurate model representations of BrC to global climate and atmospheric oxidative capacity. In this study, the light absorption properties and chromophore composition of three BrC fractions of different polarities were characterized for urban aerosol collected in Xi'an and Beijing in winter 2013-2014. These three BrC fractions show large differences in light absorption and chromophore composition, but the chromophores responsible for light absorption are similar in Xi'an and Beijing. Water-ins…
Dual emission of a bis(pyrene)-functionalized, perbenzylated beta-cyclodextrin
2008
A bis(pyrene)-functionalized β-cyclodextrin (1) has been prepared in two steps from perbenzylated β-cyclodextrin. This compound shows dual emission properties, which arise from the pyrenyl chromophores. Upon excitation of 1 at 355 nm, monomer blue fluorescence (386, 407 and 428 nm) is observed in DMSO solution, whereas excimer green fluorescence (477 nm) is seen upon addition of ≥20 vol% water in DMSO. This suggests that modified β-cyclodextrin 1 changes its shape in response to the environment. The sensing properties of 1 towards carboxylic acids and alcohols were investigated in H2O–DMSO (80 : 20 v/v). Monomer fluorescence is restored selectively by medium length normal carboxylic acids, …
Purely organic Vis-to-UV upconversion with an excited annihilator singlet beyond 4 eV
2022
The conversion of visible light into high-energy UV photons via sensitized triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA-UC) could pave the way for several energy-demanding applications. However, only a handful of annihilator chromophores for Vis-to-UV upconversion are known and the current limit for the excited-state energy of the UV emitter in TTA-UC schemes is below 4 eV, i.e., in the spectral region (>310 nm) where the sun still provides a considerable photon flux. Herein, we present a novel biphenyl-based annihilator with a highly fluorescent singlet state at 4.04 eV. This annihilator can be combined with a widely-used TADF sensitizer to yield an efficient blue-light (2.77 eV) driven upconversion …
Optical Switching and Antenna Effect of Dendrimers with an Anthracene Core
2007
Dendrimers 6G(i) (i=1-4) consisting of an anthracene core and Fréchet dendrons which are attached via a CH(2)OCH(2) chain in the 9-position undergo quantitative and completely reversible intramolecular [4pi+4pi] cycloaddition. The process can be monitored by absorption and fluorescence measurements. The Fréchet dendrons act as an energy funnel that collects and focuses the photon energy but does not change the photostationary states, which for both directions are completely on the product side when the separate chromophores are selectively irradiated. The quantum yields of anthracene fluorescence and of singlet energy transfer from the dendrons to the core were studied as a function of dend…

Role of vitreous matrix on the optical activity of Ge-doped silica
2003
Abstract We report an experimental study on the relationship between the optical activity of Ge-oxygen deficient centers and dynamic properties and conformational heterogeneity of vitreous matrix in silica. We focus our attention on the absorption band at ∼5.2 eV (B 2β ) and on the two related emissions at ∼4.2 eV (α E ) and at ∼3.1 eV (β). From the temperature dependence of B 2β band we estimate a mean energy value of 26 meV for local vibrational modes coupled to the electronic transition, suggesting that the chromophore and its surrounding have access to low frequency dynamics. From the thermal behavior of the two emissions we distinguish the two competitive relaxation processes from the …
Novel azobenzene precursors for NLO active polyuretanes: Synthesis, quantum chemical and experimental characterization
2009
Abstract For the development of electro optical active polyurethanes six new derivatives of 2-{(2-hydroxyethyl)-[4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyl]amino}ethanol and two of 2-{(2-hydroxyethyl)-[4-(5-nitropyridin-2-ylazo)phenyl]amino}ethanol were synthesized by azocoupling reaction. Molecular geometry, hyperpolarizability βFF and ground state dipole moment μg were acquired by RHF ab initio (6–31G∗∗) calculations using HyperChem software package. To characterize NLO performance of synthesized azo compounds second order non linear coefficients d31 and d33 were measured as function of chromophore load in guest–host films (PMMA). Eight synthesized compounds can be grouped in four similar gross formula p…
Docking of indolo- and pyrrolo-pyrimidines to DNA. New DNA-interactive polycycles from amino-indoles/pyrroles and BMMA
2004
New indolo- and pyrrolo-pyrimidines of type 1-4 were studied for their ability to form stable complexes with DNA fragments. The calculated free energies of binding were found in the range -8.39 ÷ -16.72 Kcal/mol. The docking studies revealed a common binding mode with the chromophore intercalated between GC base pairs whereas the side chain lies along the minor groove.
