The solvent-excluding surface as a descriptor of ionic channels: Gramicidin-A

Abstract We have set out a methodology for checking the performance of the methods used to compute the Solvent-Excluding Surface. The method consists of computing the area of the Solvent-Excluding Surface of a model of channel, with a fixed pore size, for several values of the solvent radius. The graphical representation of the value of the area versus the radius of the solvent sphere shows a sharp change just at the radius of the pore. With this model we may analyze the ability of each method to describe small changes of the surface. We made the study with GEPOL93, older versions of GEPOL and MSDOT. The pH of the Human Nail Plate

In this chapter, measurements of the nail plate pH are reported. Measurements were conducted in vivo in 37 volunteers with healthy finger- and toenails, using a skin pH meter. The pH of unwashed and washed fin- gernails and the big toenails was measured, and the influence of washing, anatomical site (fin- gers/toes), side (left/right), finger digit (digits 1–5), and gender were determined. The pH of the nail plate surface was around 5. There was no significant difference between the sides, i.e., the right or left hand/foot, among the ten fin- gernails and between the two great toenails. Abstract The swimming larvae of ascidians are entirely covered by a hyalin coat called tunic, or test. This covering consists of two cuticular layers, C 1 and C 2 , which surround an inner compartment composed of an amorphous hyalin matrix with numerous fibrils dispersed inside. Data from the literature agree on the key role played by the cells of the larval ectodermic layer in the synthesis and secretion of larval test components. Abstract The present work reports the preparation of samples based on Millennium PC-500 TiO 2 loaded with different amounts of tungstophosphoric acid (up to 30% in weight) and their characterisation by means of different physicochemical techniques: powder X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption at −196 °C, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis and FT-IR spectroscopies and thermogravimetric analyses. Neurons and ECM regulate occludin localization in brain endothelial cells

We report that extracellular matrix and neurons modulate the expression of occludin, one of the main components of tight junctions, by rat brain endothelial cells (RBE4.B). Of the three extracellular matrix proteins which we tested (collagen I, collagen IV, and laminin), collagen IV stimulated at the best the expression of occludin mRNA. The corresponding protein, however, was not synthesized. Significant amounts of occludin accumulated only when RBE4.B cells were cultured on collagen IV-coated inserts, in the presence of cortical neurons, plated on laminin-coated companion wells. The link between vulnerability and social exclusion and criminal trajectories. An association study

Este estudio tiene por objeto identificar la relación existente entre las trayectorias delictivas y los factores de vulnerabilidad y exclusión social en adolescentes en conflicto con la ley. Para ello se analizan 281 expedientes de adolescentes en conflicto con la ley de la ciudad de València y se generan 3 trayectorias delictivas: inicial, moderada y consolidada, que se asocian a indicadores de vulnerabilidad y exclusión social. Se muestran evidencias empíricas de su relación. Las trayectorias delictivas y los factores de vulnerabilidad y exclusión social se hallan plenamente conectados, entrelazados y superpuestos.
