Feasibility and Safety of Laparoscopic Complete Mesocolic Excision (CME) for Right-sided Colon Cancer

2020

OBJECTIVE The aim of this prospective clinical study is to compare short-term outcome of laparoscopic right hemicolectomy using the Complete Mesocolic Excision (CME group) with patients who underwent conventional right-sided colonic resection (NCME group). SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA Although CME with central vascular ligation in laparoscopic right hemicolectomy is associated with a significant decrease in local recurrence rates and improvements in cancer-related 5-year survival, there may be additional risks associated with this technique because of increased surgical complications. As a result, there is controversy surrounding its use. METHODS In this randomized controlled trial, several prim…

Microvascular blood flow changes of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle during sustained static exercise

2021

A practical assessment of the general health and microvascular function of the palm muscle, abductor pollicis brevis (APB), is important for the diagnosis of different conditions. In this study, we have developed a protocol and a probe to study microvascular blood flow using near-infrared diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) in APB during and after thumb abduction at 55% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Near-infrared time resolved spectroscopy (TRS) was also used to characterize the baseline optical and hemodynamic properties. Thirteen (n=13) subjects were enrolled and subdivided in low MVC (N=6, MVC<2.3 kg) and high MVC (N=7, MVC≥2.3 kg) groups. After ruling out significant cha…

Variations in acoustical beam properties of intracoronary Doppler catheters.

1993

The limitations of coronary angiography in assessing the functional significance of coronary obstructions is well known. While the critical variable of coronary blood flow cannot be readily measured, intraluminal Doppler sonography offers useful related functional information on blood flow velocity. In order to fully evaluate Doppler signals it is essential to have exact knowledge of the transducer transmission characteristics and of the ultrasound beam topology. In an experimental set-up, the transmitter-receiver characteristics of five commonly used Doppler catheters were investigated. In comparing the beam characteristics we found inhomogeneities in the lateral beam spread. At a penetrat…

Effects of ovariectomy and steroid replacement on GABAA receptor binding in female rat brain.

1991

Abstract The specific binding of tritiated muscimol to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor sites was studied in distinct brain areas of female rats during different endocrine states. In diestrous rats with intact ovaries the highest receptor densities were found in the cortex (10.24 pmol/mg protein) and the lowest concentrations in the mediobasal hypothalamus (3.29 pmol/mg protein). Four weeks after removal of the ovaries, the number of binding sites was enhanced up to 2.4-fold in all brain areas investigated: the preoptic brain area, mediobasal hypothalamus, corticomedial amygdala, and cerebral cortex. The affinity of the binding sites remained unchanged. Substitution of estradiol and prog…

gamma-Aminobutyric acid and cholinergic transmission in the guinea-pig ileum.

1983

1. The effects of GABA on release of acetylcholine and on contractility of the smooth muscle were studied in the myenteric plexus-longitudinal muscle preparation of the guinea pig. Acetylcholine was determined as radiolabelled transmitter from strips preloaded with 3H-choline. 2. GABA (1–300 μM) caused an increase in resting tension of smooth muscle as well as an increase in release of acetylcholine that was considerably reduced by tetrodotoxin. The facilitation by GABA of acetylcholine release exhibited a marked tachyphylaxis. The increase in muscle tension was clearly related to the increase in acetylcholine release. Muscimol (0.1–10 μM) also enhanced the release of acetylcholine. The eff…

Effects of Long-Term Nitroglycerin Treatment on Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS III) Gene Expression, NOS III–Mediated Superoxide Production, …

2000

Abstract —Long-term nitroglycerin (NTG) treatment has been shown to be associated with cross-tolerance to endothelium-dependent vasodilators. It may involve increased production of reactive oxygen species (such as superoxide, O 2 ·− ) that rapidly inactivate the nitric oxide (NO) released from the endothelial cells. It remains to be elucidated, however, whether long-term treatment with NTG alters the activity and expression of the endothelial NO synthase (NOS III) and whether this enzyme can contribute to O 2 ·− formation. We studied the influence of long-term NTG treatment on the expression of NOS III as assessed by RNase protection assay and Western blot. Tolerance was measured ex vivo i…

Dimensional stability of contemporary irreversible hydrocolloids: humidor versus wet tissue storage.

2012

Statement of problem The storage time and conditions of irreversible hydrocolloid impressions affect their accuracy and in turn the precision of the definitive cast. Recommendations for proper storage are, however, based on theoretical assumptions rather than facts. Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of the 2 most common storage conditions on the dimensional stability of 7 contemporary irreversible hydrocolloids (IH) for a period of up to 7 days. Material and methods Twelve specimens per material (Blueprint, Cavex CA37, Cavex ColorChange, Jeltrate, Orthoprint, Cavex Orthotrace, and Tetrachrom) were fabricated according to ISO/CD 21563. The specimens were either st…

Application principles of excimer lasers in ophthalmology

2010

Abstract Excimer lasers (193 nm) can be used for photoablation of the human cornea due to their specific physical characteristics. This laser is applied in corneal refractive surgery for the targeted removal of corneal tissue for the purpose of correcting refractive errors. This article provides a short overview of the scientific development of excimer lasers for use in ophthalmic surgery and of the range of applications of these tools.

Irregularity of the posterior corneal surface during applanation using a curved femtosecond laser interface and microkeratome cutting head.

2012

PURPOSE: To evaluate the irregularity of the posterior corneal surface and intrastromal dissection during the preparation of donor tissue for Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) using a curved interface femtosecond laser and microkeratome. METHODS: Sixteen human donor corneas unsuitable for transplantation were divided into two groups: a femtosecond (FS) laser group (n=7) using the VisuMax femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec) and a microkeratome group (n=9) using the Amadeus II microkeratome (Ziemer Ophthalmic Group). The corneas were fixed on artificial anterior chambers. Horizontal cross-sections were obtained using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography…

Objective measures of nasal function

1995

Numerous techniques to objectively measure nasal function are available to the rhinologic surgeon. Rhinomanometry, acoustic rhinometry, laser Doppler flowmetry, saccharin transport time, determination of ciliary beat frequency, and olfactory and trigeminal event-related potentials are all techniques in current use. Rhinomanometry is the standard clinical tool used to indicate those patients complaining of nasal obstruction who are likely to benefit from septal and turbinate surgery. Acoustic rhinometry permits the precise localization of nasal stenoses and is the best predictor of a patient's postoperative satisfaction. It is, in addition, more sensitive than rhinomanometry in recording cha…
