Acetylcholine via Muscarinic Receptors Inhibits Histamine Release from Human Isolated Bronchi
1997
Human bronchi were incubated in organ baths to measure histamine release. The calcium ionophore A23187 (10 mumol/L; 1 min) stimulated histamine release by 148 +/- 28% (n = 11) above the prestimulation level but was ineffective in epithelium-denuded bronchi. Neither bradykinin (0.1 mumol/L) nor compound 48/80 (10 micrograms/ml) triggered the release of histamine from epithelium-intact bronchi. Acetylcholine did not affect spontaneous histamine release (about 2 nmol/g x 5 min) but inhibited A23187-evoked histamine release in an atropine-sensitive manner. Already a concentration as low as 0.1 nmol/L acetylcholine was effective, the maximal inhibition (by 89%) occurred at 100 nmol/L, whereas a …
Useless and limits of Postmortem CT (PMCT) in a complex case of preterm infant murder
2023
The present case-report empathizes the usefulness of post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) in the detection of live birth signs in a baby found dead, comparing the results with standard autoptic, histologic and immunohistochemical examinations. The report describes the case of a new-born who was thrown out on the footpath from a window of the fifth floor according to the investigative police, whilst the mother has hidden herself immediately after childbirth.PMCT showed diffusely aerated lung parenchyma with signs of severe lung distress, air in the airways with no fluid inside, and air in the upper gastro-intestinal tract, in absence any resuscitation manoeuvres performed on the baby at del…

Metric discrimination and distribution of the species of Crocidura occuring in Tunisia
1992
A recent paper on the occurrence of the genus Crocidura in Tunisia reports a single specimen identified as C. suaveolens. Therefore a third species, besides C. russula and C. whitakeri would occur in the country. However, the presence of C. suaveolens in North-Africa is controversial and was recently ruled out from the other Maghrebi countries (Algieria and Morocco). During the period 1989-90, 71 specimens of shrews were collected from owls pellets or trapped at Tunisian 12 sites. This material was measured and studied both by classic morphometric and multivariate methods (Fuzzy test, Principal Coordinate Analysis and Generalized Procrustes Analysis), considering also reference samples (C. …

Medidas durante el COVID-19 y Derecho mercantil (Parte II: Derecho concursal).
2020
The crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic has forced it to take multiple measures of different kinds to mitigate its effects during the Alarm State. These measures include those that have effects on various commercial law institutions, such as those relating to insolvency issues.
Basil (Ocimum basilicum), a new host of Pepino mosaic virus.
2009
Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV), a member of the genus Potexvirus , was first described in 1980 on pepino ( Solanum muricatum ) and was later isolated from different wild species of the genus Solanum (formerly Lycopersicon ) (Soler et al ., 2002). PepMV has been reported in several European countries and in North America, causing disease in tomato. In July 2008, plants of basil ( Ocimum basilicum ) showing interveinal chlorosis on young leaves were observed in three greenhouses in Sicily, in the area where tomato plants were found to be infected by PepMV in 2005 (Davino et al ., 2006). The disease was transmitted mechanically to Nicotiana benthamiana , producing chlorotic spots and leaf deforma…
Evaluación del efecto rejuvenecedor de bio-materiales sobre ligantes para mezclas con alto contenido de asfalto recuperado
2017
The interest in using bio-materials in pavement engineering has grown significantly over the last decades due to environmental concerns about the use of non-recoverable natural resources. In this paper, bio-materials are used together with Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) to restore some of the properties of the aged bitumen present in mixtures with high RA content. For this purpose, two bio-materials are studied and compared to conventional and polymer modified bitumens. Blends of these materials with RA bitumen were produced and studied to simulate a 50% RA mixture. The rejuvenating effect of the two bio-materials on RA has been assessed and compared with the effect of the conventional binders. App…
Tributyltin affects phagocytic activity of Ciona intestinalis hemocytes
1995
Organotin compounds have been used in marine anti-fouling paints as biocides. Because tunicates are vulnerable to these compounds in their natural habitats, we used Ciona intestinalis to establish an assay for phagocytosis in vitro of yeast by hemocytes after exposure to different concentrations (0.0015, 0.015, 0.15 and 1.5 microM) of four organotin compounds: tributyltin (TBT), triphenyltin (TPT), dibutyltin (DBT) and diphenyltin (DPT). To evaluate the phagocytic activity, we used a method based on fluorescence excitation of yeast pre-treated with eosin-Y. The percentage of phagocytosis decreased from 45.1 +/- 3.49 to 22.4 +/- 5.14 at 1.5 microM of TBT (P0.001); it was significantly reduce…
