Laboratory Measurements of Flow and Turbulence in Discontinuous Distributions of Ligulate Seagrass

2007

Turbulent flow characteristics were investigated in laboratory flume studies of a ligulate plant canopy interrupted by a gap representing discontinuities observed in seagrass prairies. The reliability of velocity measurements obtained using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter within the canopy was shown using specifically designed experiments. In relatively fast flow (mean velocity 5.5 cm s−1), the mean flow profile was logarithmic above the canopy, had an inflection point near its top, and uniformly low values within it. Within the gap, a recirculation cell formed. Reynolds stress maxima were approximately coincident with the mean flow inflection point. Quadrant analysis revealed an ejection-d…

Delayed filling of retinal and ciliary circulation after central retinal artery occlusion

1988

The filling times of the retinal and choroidal circulation were evaluated in 17 patients with central retinal artery occlusion by means of fluorescein angiography. A correlation between the filling times of the two circulations was found. However, two filling patterns were seen: first, both fillings delayed; second, both fillings normal. It is probable that in the former case an obstructive disease of the carotid arteries exists, while in the latter case an important pathology of the carotid arteries is lacking, favouring a rapid restoration of the retinal circulation. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by the results of the Doppler velocimetry of the carotid arteries.

Genetic abrogation of the fibronectin-α5β1 integrin interaction in articular cartilage aggravates osteoarthritis in mice.

2018

The balance between synthesis and degradation of the cartilage extracellular matrix is severely altered in osteoarthritis, where degradation predominates. One reason for this imbalance is believed to be due to the ligation of the α5β1 integrin, the classic fibronectin (FN) receptor, with soluble FN fragments instead of insoluble FN fibrils, which induces matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression. Our objective was to determine whether the lack of α5β1-FN binding influences cartilage morphogenesis in vivo and whether non-ligated α5β1 protects or aggravates the course of osteoarthritis in mice. We engineered mice (Col2a-Cre;Fn1RGE/fl), whose chondrocytes express an α5β1 binding-deficient FN, …

Long-chain fatty alcohols from pomace olive oil modulate the release of proinflammatory mediators

2009

Pomace olive oil is a by-product of olive oil extraction that is traditionally produced and consumed in Spain. The nonglyceride matter of this oil is a good source of interesting minor compounds, like long-chain fatty alcohols, which are present free or as part of waxes. In the present study, long-chain fatty alcohols were isolated from the nonglyceride fraction of pomace olive oil, and the composition was identified and quantified. The major components of long-chain fatty alcohols were tetracosanol, hexacosanol and octacosanol. We investigated the ability of long-chain fatty alcohols from pomace olive oil to inhibit the release of different proinflammatory mediators in vitro by cells invol…

Two Enhancers Control Transcription of Drosophila muscleblind in the Embryonic Somatic Musculature and in the Central Nervous System

2014

The phylogenetically conserved family of Muscleblind proteins are RNA-binding factors involved in a variety of gene expression processes including alternative splicing regulation, RNA stability and subcellular localization, and miRNA biogenesis, which typically contribute to cell-type specific differentiation. In humans, sequestration of Muscleblind-like proteins MBNL1 and MBNL2 has been implicated in degenerative disorders, particularly expansion diseases such as myotonic dystrophy type 1 and 2. Drosophila muscleblind was previously shown to be expressed in embryonic somatic and visceral muscle subtypes, and in the central nervous system, and to depend on Mef2 for transcriptional activatio…

Microcirculation after cerebral venous occlusions as assessed by laser Doppler scanning.

1997

✓ Research on cerebral venous circulation disturbances (CVCDs) has been limited partly by the paucity of animal models that produce consistent venous infarction. Occlusion of two adjacent cortical veins in rats by means of a photochemical thrombotic technique provides a minimally invasive, clinically relevant, and reproducible model suited to study the pathophysiology of CVCDs. In this study, the effects of venous occlusion on regional cortical blood flow and the brain damage that ensues were evaluated. Cortical vein occlusion was induced by photoactivation of rose bengal via 100-µm fiberoptic illumination. The cerebral venous flow pattern was examined using fluorescence angiography until 9…

Experimente zur Zeolithbildung durch hydrothermale Umwandlung

1974

The formation of zeolites by hydrothermal alteration has been investigated by taking trass from the Laach volcanic area as a sample. Zeolites to be found are chabazite, phillipsite and analcime, all of which originated from the same phonolitic glass. This paper aims at explaining the formation of zeolites by means of experimental alteration of the pumice with various solutions. NaOH and KOH solutions were used in the experiments, these limited the formation conditions of chabazite, phillipsite, analcime in alkaline environments. Moreover, experiments were carried out with H2O dist and with solutions that formed during the alteration of pumice by reacting with H2O. These experiments were con…
