Efficient software tool for the analysis of planar-based metamaterial structures

2007

We present a software tool specialized in the analysis of metamaterial structures based on planar circuits. The tool implements a formulation for open transversal multilayered structures, which reduces the number of unknowns employed in the problem. Besides, the formulation has been efficiently accelerated by means of a Kummer-like decomposition, extracting the singular behaviour of the Green's functions from the frequency analysis. By means of this formulation, several different kinds of metamaterial structures built in coplanar and microstrip technologies are successfully analyzed, obtaining bandpass and stopband filter responses in a fast and accurate way. New Power Conditioning System for Battery-free Satellite Buses with Maximum Power Point Tracking

2007

The purpose of this paper is describe a new conception of Power Conditioning Unit (PCU) developed to fulfill the requirements of BepiColombo Electronic Propulsion module. This load bus has very tough specification especially regarding transient response during total load switch-off ("beam out") which has to be less than 2% of the bus voltage. The conception we propose, is the new Sequential Switching Shunt Maximum Power Regulator (S3MPR) consisting in a S3R, to keep the SA voltage at its Maximum Power Point (MPP) followed by a Boost regulator to produce a constant 100V to supply the Electronic Propulsion (EP). This concept may also be of interest for other future missions involving high pow…

A Methodology for the Design of MOS Current-Mode Logic Circuits

2010

In this paper, a design methodology for the minimization of various performance metrics of MOS Current-Mode Logic (MCML) circuits is described. In particular, it allows to minimize the delay under a given power consumption, the power consumption under a given delay and the power-delay product. Design solutions can be evaluated graphically or by simple and effective automatic procedures implemented within the MATLAB environment. The methodology exploits the novel concepts of crossing-point current and crossing-point capacitance. A useful feature of it is that it provides the designer with useful insights into the dependence of the performance metrics on design variables and fan-out capacitan…

Mixed signal system design (A project based course)

2014

This paper describes an undergraduate 10 ECTS course in the design of analog and digital microelectronic circuits based on a project. This is offered for the students of Electronics engineering in their 3 rd semester of the 6-semester bachelor-programme. The emphasis is given on the mixed signal aspects of the system design. From the project, students get practical experience in the mixed signal system design.

Automated Calculation Method to Determine the Output Power Based on the Frequency for Induction Heating IGBT Parallel Inverter

2007

The fact that some inverter topologies used in induction heating applications allow the soft switching working operation lets the progressive replacement of the MOSFET with the IGBT in high power inverters. This is due to two main reasons, the former is the IGBT reliability and the latter is the ratio defined as the price of the component per output power. In this article an automated method to determine the output power based on the frequency of an inverter build with different IGBT is described. To carry out this method is necessary to define the power cycle and to develop the calculation process which determines the energy losses in the working conditions of the resonant parallel inverte…

Development details and performance assessment of a Wind Turbine Emulator

2016

This paper describes an experimental platform to emulate the static and dynamic behavior of real Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). The Wind Turbine Emulator (WTE) consists of two coupled 1.5 kW squirrel-cage induction machines. The WTE calculations are performed on a PC and a DSP, both connected via USB. The total torque applied to the WTE motor is the difference of the scaled wind mechanical torque calculated on the PC, and the turbine inertia torque calculated on the DSP. An improved WTE shaft speed derivative has been used for the inertia torque calculation, which provides better results in terms of attenuation of the high-frequency harmonics present in the generator speed acquisiti…

A simple unsynchronized two‐end algorithm for faults location and identification in electrical distribution systems

2012

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify a new and simple two‐end algorithm for fault location identification and characterization, in electrical distribution systems.Design/methodology/approachThe developed diagnostic algorithm is based on a simple model of the network using a lumped parameters representation.FindingsTest results have proved the approach to be efficient, allowing a precise fault identification and location while not requiring synchronized measures from the two ends.Research limitations/implicationsThere is a need for measurement systems at all MV/LV substations.Practical implicationsApplicability with limited investments is not possible where metering systems are no…

A procedure to calculate the five-parameter model of crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules on the basis of the tabular performance data

2013

Abstract Only few manufactures provide the wide set of graphical data that are necessary to use high performance predictive tools for PV systems. On the other hand, reliable graphical data require accurate laboratory measurements that increase manufacturing costs. For this reason PV system designers have to choose between the use of cheap PV modules, lacking in technical data, and the reliable energy predictions that are possible only if the current–voltage characteristics are provided by the PV module manufacturers. This paper describes the procedure to evaluate the parameters of a one-diode equivalent circuit able to accurately represent the electrical behaviour of a PV panel by means of …

Near zero energy island with sea wave energy: The case study of Pantelleria in Mediterranean Sea

2016

In this paper the authors present a study of the transition of an energy generation system for a real MV/LV distribution system from one that is "fuel-based" to a "renewables-based" system in particular from sea wave energy, using the data acquired from an innovative generator prototype realized by University of Palermo. The study is carried out for a real islanded network located in the Island of Pantelleria (Mediterranean Sea). The procedures applied in the present article, as well as the main equations used, are the result of previous applications made in different technical fields that show a good replicability [1]-[7].
