Neuroplasticity in the Adjustment to Blindness

Loss of vision due to injury to the eyes results in deafferentation of very large areas of the human cortex and poses striking demands on other sensory systems to adjust to blindness in a society that heavily relies on vision. Blind subjects need to extract crucial spatial information from touch and hearing. To accomplish this, plastic trans-modal changes appear to take place by which a larger area of the sensorimotor cortex is devoted to the representation of the reading finger in Braille readers, and parts of the former visual cortex are recruited for the processing of tactile and auditory information.
Objective assessment of cataract: Comparison between the Lens Opacities Classification System III and a Scheimpflug camera

Purpose Develop an automatic system for cataract classification using the Sirius Scheimpflug for both nuclear and cortical cataract. Methods Scheimpflug images were taken using the Sirius system in 50 patients with nuclear and/or cortical cataract (mean age 69 ± 9.2 years). The nuclear opacity (NO) and cortical opacity was graded by an ophthalmologist according to the Lens Opacities Classification System (LOCSIII) by comparing the slit-lamp image with the LOCS's standard nuclear images. The vision of the bull is the cornerstone of the celebration in which it is the protagonist, both when it is fought and when it is “embolado” in popular festivities. An alteration of the vision could suppose an excessive danger for the animal and for the one that faces him. Haze formation with loss of corneal transparency and surface irregularities and myopic regression are the major complications after corneal refractive surface surgery. The use of mitomycin C (MMC) with its antibiotic and antineoplastic properties is intended to inhibit wound healing mechanisms leading to subepithelial fibrosis. We report the use of MMC to achieve visual rehabilitation in the re-treatment of 3 eyes of 2 patients following refractive corneal surgery. Purpose: To evaluate distance, intermediate and near visual performance in patients who had undergone implantation of the multifocal aspheric AcrySof ReSTOR intraocular lens (IOL). The effects of a single dose of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (0.4 J/cm2) on immunological functions by blood leukocytes and on hematological parameters was studied in roach (Rutilus rutilus), a teleostean fish. The respiratory burst of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate stimulated whole blood phagocytes increased significantly after UVB irradiation but spontaneous cytotoxicity of blood leukocytes toward 51chromium-labeled K562 target cells was not markedly altered. This research aims at estimating association between socioeconomic and psychosocial factors on the one hand and health in Latvia on the other hand. While information on association between socioeconomic determinants of population health in Latvia is scarce, effect of psychosocial resources on individual health in this country hasn’t been estimated before. We find empirical support for the association between different psychosocial factors and physical health in Latvia. This paper proposes new approach for modelling self-assessed health.
