TOWARDS THE DECARBONIZATION OF THE EU BUILDING STOCK: AN INTEGRATED BUILDING STOCK RENOVATION MODELING APPROACH
2020
In Europe, the residential building stock is responsible for about 40% of the energy demand and about 36% of the CO2 emission at global level. Considering that almost 70% of the existing building stock will still be used in 2050, a long-term vision is needed to align with future challenges to avoid having significant increases in carbon emissions. The European policymakers have a long-recognized potential energy saving associated with the renovation of the existing building stocks, as demonstrated by the directives on the Energy performance of buildings (EPBD), introducing also the need to developed an integrated buildings design approach with environmental analysis. The purpose of this the…
Adversarial Machine Learning in e-Health: Attacking a Smart Prescription System
2022
Machine learning (ML) algorithms are the basis of many services we rely on in our everyday life. For this reason, a new research line has recently emerged with the aim of investigating how ML can be misled by adversarial examples. In this paper we address an e-health scenario in which an automatic system for prescriptions can be deceived by inputs forged to subvert the model's prediction. In particular, we present an algorithm capable of generating a precise sequence of moves that the adversary has to take in order to elude the automatic prescription service. Experimental analyses performed on a real dataset of patients' clinical records show that a minimal alteration of the clinical record…
Emily Nevill Jackson e le Arti Decorative in Sicilia
2022
Through the study of sources and their contextualisation with the panorama of artistic literature of the time, the article aims to present the figure of Emily Nevill Jackson, an English scholar of the Decorative Arts active in London between the end of the 19th century and the first thirty years of the 20th century. Jackson can be counted among the many women scholars who published in the main periodicals of the sector during that period, contributing to a comprehensive representation of the international reality related to the specific sector of Decorative Arts, in the wake of the influence of Ruskin and Morris’ thought. Jackson, in particular, in the final part of her career made a trip t…
Sicily's Prime - Il viaggio nelle Arti Decorative siciliane di Emily Nevill Jackson
2022
“A student in Sicily” by Emily Nevill Jackson, published in 1926, represents the first real general survey of Sicilian Decorative Arts. In it, the author describes in detail works, typologies, materials, techniques and collections with a meticulousness and precision that would only be fully reflected and scientifically formulated in later studies. After reconstructing the figure of the scholar, the book examines Jackson's text on the works of Decorative Arts, contextualising it with the most recent scientific studies on the works themselves.
The ziqqurath of exact sequences of n-groupoids
2011
In this work we study exactness in the sesqui-category of n-groupoids. Using homotopy pullbacks, we construct a six term sequence of (n-1)-groupoids from an n-functor between pointed n-groupoids. We show that the sequence is exact in a suitable sense, which generalizes the usual notions of exactness for groups and categorical groups. Moreover, iterating the process, we get a ziqqurath of exact sequences of increasing length and decreasing dimension. For n = 1 we recover a classical result due to R. Brown and, for n = 2 its generalizations due to Hardie, Kamps and Kieboom and to Duskin, Kieboom and Vitale.
Fixed fuzzy points of fuzzy mappings in Hausdorff fuzzy metric spaces with application
2015
Recently, Phiangsungnoen et al. [J. Inequal. Appl. 2014:201 (2014)] studied fuzzy mappings in the framework of Hausdorff fuzzy metric spaces. Following this direction of research, we establish the existence of fixed fuzzy points of fuzzy mappings. An example is given to support the result proved herein; we also present a coincidence and common fuzzy point result. Finally, as an application of our results, we investigate the existence of solution for some recurrence relations associated to the analysis of quicksort algorithms.
Analysis of clickstream data with mixture hidden markov models
2021
Clickstream data is an important source of information for businesses, however it is not easy to …
Simulazioni e dissimulazioni nella costruzione dello scenario: gli esami online durante la pandemia
2020
Due to the pandemic, in the University of Palermo (Italy) the remote mode was used for both teaching and final exams. Specifically, our reflection aimed at understanding the impact of the online exams on the “private dimension” of the students. According to the regulations of the University of Palermo, during the exams, the students must be visible in their own space, while the teachers were allowed to insert different screens to protect their private space. The result was, for the students, the public sharing of their spaces, the collective insertion into their private dimension and the manifestation of individual differences and inequalities in access to resources. Smart working involved …
Accretion shock on CTTSs and its X-ray emission
2009
High spectral resolution X-ray observations of classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) demonstrate the presence of plasma at T~2-3×10^6 K and ne~10^11-10^13 cm-3. Stationary models suggest that this emission is due to shock-heated accreting material. We address this issue by a 1-D hydrodynamic model of the impact of the accretion flow onto a chromosphere of a CTTS with the aim of investigating the stability of accretion shock and the role of the chromosphere. Our simulations include the effects of gravity, radiative losses from optically thin plasma, the thermal conduction and a detailed modeling of the stellar chromosphere. Here we present the results of a simulation based on the parameters of the…
The nearest X-ray emitting protostellar jet observed with HST
2009
The HH 154 jet coming from the YSO binary L1551 IRS5 is one of the closest (about 150 pc) astrophysical jet known. It is therefore a unique laboratory for studies of outflow mechanisms and of the shocks forming at the interaction front between the expanding material and the ambient medium. The substructures (knots) observed within the HH 154 jet were imaged in several spectral bands using the Hubble Space Telescope. This allows us to derive a simple characterization of the physical conditions in different structures as well as to measure the proper motion of the knots in the jet, their flux variability and shock emission over a time base of about ten years. These knots in the jet undergo si…
