Management of Dyslipidemia in the Metabolic Syndrome

In order to characterize the metabolic syndrome it becomes necessary to establish a number of diagnostic criteria. Because of its impact on cardiovascular morbidity/mortality, considerable attention has been focussed on the dyslipidemia accompanying the metabolic syndrome. The aim of this review is to highlight the fundamental aspects of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and the treatment of the metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia with recommendations to clinicians. In the mammalian pineal gland it is notoriously difficult to relate structure to function. The pineal-specific cells, the pinealocytes, contain only inconspicuous numbers of secretory granules, and the variable amounts of smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum also do not point to a particular function. In addition to these widely known cellular components, pinealocytes contain organelles, the so-called 'synaptic' ribbons, histophysiological studies of which provide important insights into the structural and functional complexity of the organ. Severe Tremor After Cotrimoxazole-Induced Elevation of Venlafaxine Serum Concentrations in a Patient With Major Depressive Disorder

: We describe a female patient who was an extensive metabolizer of cytochrome P450 isoenzyme (CYP) 2D6 and an intermediate metabolizer of CYP2C19 (genotype: CYP2C19 *1/*2). She exhibited high serum concentrations of venlafaxine and O-desmethylvenlafaxine and developed severe tremor after comedication with cotrimoxazole (sulfamethazole/trimethoprim). Venlafaxine is mainly metabolized by O- and N-demethylation. O-demethylation is catalyzed by the highly polymorphic CYP2D6 and N-demethylation by several enzymes, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4. Cetuximab-induced skin exanthema: prophylactic and reactive skin therapy are equally effective

Purpose Treatment with cetuximab is accompanied by the development of an acneiform follicular skin exanthema in more than 80 % of patients. Severe exanthema (grade III/IV) develops in about 9–19 % of patients with the necessity of cetuximab dose reduction or cessation.

Viscoelastic material retained behind the IOL may cause a capsular bag distension in the early postoperative period. These eyes accumulate a transparent substance in the closed chamber inside the capsular bag from the IOL blocking the capsular opening. The capsular bag distension was first discribed by Davison in 1990. Miyake et al. proposed a new classification of capsular block syndrome and supposed viscoelastic material to cause early-postoperative capsular block syndrome (Miyake et al., 1999). Capsular bag distension after optic capture of a sulcus-fixated IOL was described by Basti et al. (1999).

Histamine and spontaneously released mast cell granules affect the cell growth of human hepatocellular carcinoma cells

The role of mast cells in tumor growth is still controversial. In this study we analyzed the effects of both histamine and pre-formed mediators spontaneously released by mast cells on the growth of two human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines, HA22T/VGH and HuH-6, with different characteristics of differentiation, biological behavior and genetic defects. We showed that total mast cell releasate, exocytosed granules (granule remnants) and histamine reduced cell viability and proliferation in HuH-6 cells. 23,24-Dihydrocucurbitacin B, from the anti-rheumatic plant Cayaponia tayuya, was tested on arthritis induced by adjuvant to corroborate the anti-inflammatory properties of this plant. Arthritis was induced in Lewis rats; the resulting arthritic rats were then treated with dihydrocucurbitacin B (1 mg/kg orally, daily, 1 week). Expression of inhibitory glycine receptors in postnatal rat cerebral cortex.

The developmental expression of inhibitory glycine receptors was analyzed in postnatal rat cerebral cortex using the specific monoclonal antibody, MAb 4a. This antibody defines an epitope common to all known glycine receptor alpha-subunits. At birth, high levels of immunoreactivity were found, which transiently increased during the second postnatal week, but subsequently declined to low adult levels. Biochemical analysis of the MAb 4a antigen from parietal areas indicates that cortical glycine receptors correspond to the neonatal receptor isoform previously identified in spinal cord of newborn animals. Intermittent ethanol exposure induces inflammatory brain damage and causes long-term behavioural alterations in adolescent rats

Adolescent brain development seems to be important for the maturation of brain structures and behaviour. Intermittent binge ethanol drinking is common among adolescents, and this type of drinking can induce brain damage.
