Adaptive independent sticky MCMC algorithms

In this work, we introduce a novel class of adaptive Monte Carlo methods, called adaptive independent sticky MCMC algorithms, for efficient sampling from a generic target probability density function (pdf). The new class of algorithms employs adaptive non-parametric proposal densities which become closer and closer to the target as the number of iterations increases. The proposal pdf is built using interpolation procedures based on a set of support points which is constructed iteratively based on previously drawn samples. Bayesian inference for the extremal dependence

A simple approach for modeling multivariate extremes is to consider the vector of component-wise maxima and their max-stable distributions. The extremal dependence can be inferred by estimating the angular measure or, alternatively, the Pickands dependence function. We propose a nonparametric Bayesian model that allows, in the bivariate case, the simultaneous estimation of both functional representations through the use of polynomials in the Bernstein form. The constraints required to provide a valid extremal dependence are addressed in a straightforward manner, by placing a prior on the coefficients of the Bernstein polynomials which gives probability one to the set of valid functions. Pyrin selvittämään, miten yhteisön jäsenet käsittelevät perinteisesti miehiseksi miellettyä diskurssia. Tämä selviää tutkimalla yhteisön puheenaiheiden eli topiikkien sisältöä vuonna 2010. Topiikkeja ja yhteisön käyttäjäprofiilia tutkimalla pyrin myös selvittämään, voiko yhteisön puheenaiheita tai itse yhteisöä kuvailla sukupuolittuneiksi. This book deals with the linguistic resources used in e-heath, in particular in the dialogue between specialists and e-patients as well as among users in e-forums. Traditional d/p exchanges have self-adapted to create new forms, and have evolved into a different product entirely. After establishing the area within the concept of e-health and the reasons why it is important to talk about this phenomenon, the book reports some analyses that show different aspects of these online exchanges. Starting from genre, linguistic features and dialogic markers, it continues on considerations on role postions and credibility as well as on legitimation of trust.

The meaning of LOL: patterns of LOL deployment in YouTube comments

International audience; LOL may be one of the most popular words of internet slang. It is generally taken to be the acronym of ‘laughing out loud’, but, as some studies have already shown (for example Baron 2004 and Markman 2013), it is not always used to indicate a humorous response and it really is multifunctional. Building up on previous studies of the different functions of LOL, this paper seeks to explore a possible correlation between position and function of non-lexicalized LOL.
