Surface properties of valine-gramicidin A at the air-water interface
1996
Abstract Fluorescence microscopy, X-ray reflectivity and ellipsometry have been applied to the study of a monolayer of valine-gramicidin A (VGA) at the air-water interface to obtain insight into the conformation and orientation of VGA, and to clarify the shoulder observed in its π - A curve (12.5–16 mN m −1 , 240 – 175 A 2 molecule −1 ). At low molecular areas, the X-ray reflectivities are consistent with formation of a single layer of tubular-shaped dimers. Fluorescence microscopy yielded homogeneous pictures suggesting that on the macroscopic scale the shoulder cannot be attributed to domain formation. Thicknesses calculated from the ellipsometric isotherm are consistent with the X-ray da…
Temperature dependence of surface reorganization characteristics of amphiphilic block copolymer in air and in water studied by scanning force microsc…
2015
We have investigated the surface reorganization characteristics of a novel amphiphilic diblock copolymer, poly(acetic acid-2-(2-(4-vinyl-phenoxy)-ethoxy)-ethylester)-block-polystyrene (PAEES-b-PS), in response to varying interfaces from air to water and vice-versa at various temperatures. The surface reorganization characteristics of the block copolymer films was monitored by scanning force microscopy, in order to delineate the kinetically controlled morphological process of surface reorganization of a diblock copolymer, with a particular emphasis on the phase contrast signal which allowed the determination of local composition patterns of PAEES-b-PS at the surface. Upon heating a water-an…
Grain size, stress and surface roughness
2008
In this article, we report molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on the formation of roughness at the surface of strained polycrystalline aluminum samples at 300 K. The computed roughness increases as a function of applied strain but does not follow a linear law for all applied strains. A linear relationship with a small slope is obtained in the elastic domain. Then, the roughness increases rapidly with the applied strain in the plastic domain studied. Moreover, the surface roughness increases as a function of grain size (between 5 and 20 nm) in the plastic domain (<6%).
Fluorinated Fullerene Molecule on Cu(001) Surface as a Controllable Source of Fluorine Atoms
2018
A coverage-dependent growth of well-ordered copper halogenide structures as a result of fluorinated fullerene molecule adsorption on Cu(001) surface has been studied by means of scanning tunneling ...
Method of Discrimination of Surface Fractality
1993
Abstract A simple method for the discrimination of surface fractality is proposed. This method is based on the comparison of the nitrogen adsorption isotherm on a given sample with the "standard" isotherm on a smooth surface. The proposed comparative method makes it possible to determine the lower limit of the scale range of surface fractality. A thermodynamic method is recommended as a complement to fractal analysis in the scale range of about 10-1000 A. The results of the investigation of surface roughness are presented with examples of typical samples of silica gels, porous glasses, apatite, and coal.
[001] Surface Structure in SrTiO3 — Atomistic Study
1998
Thin superconducting films attract great attention as a promising material for plenty of applications. The surface determines most of the physical properties of these films. We studied the polarization effect for the [001] surface of perovskite ABO 3 superconducting crystals on the example of SrTiO 3. Optimization of the ion positions in several surface layers is provided. These ions are placed in the external field of the rest crystal. The interaction between ions is described by means of the shell model technique. We show that Ti +4, Sr 2+ and O -2 ions displace differently from their crystalline sites, which leads to the creation of a dipole moment in the near-surface region.
Supersaturation and Crystal Nucleation in Confined Geometries
1998
Surface aggregation as a necessary condition for interfacially induced crystal nucleation is studied with a surface forces apparatus (SFA).1-3 As a model system, we use the chloride salt of the rod...
Superparamagnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with tailored functionality for protein separation
2007
Polymer coated superparamagnetic gamma-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles were derivatized with a synthetic double-stranded RNA [poly(IC)], a known allosteric activator of the latent (2-5)A synthetase, to separate a single 35 kDa protein from a crude extract which cross reacted with antibodies raised against the sponge enzyme.
Experimental and theoretical evidence of overcharging of calcium silicate hydrate
2007
International audience; Electrokinetic measurements such as electrophoresis may show an inversion of the effective surface charge of colloidal particle called overcharging. This phenomenon has been studied by various theoretical approaches but up to now very few attempts of confrontation between theory and experiment have been conducted. In this work we report electrophoretic measurements as well as Monte Carlo simulations of the electrokinetic potential for the surface of calcium silicate hydrate (Csingle bondSsingle bondH), which is the major constituent of hydrated cement. In the simulations, the surface charge of Csingle bondSsingle bondH nanoparticles in equilibrium with the ionic solu…
Influence of the electrical interface properties on the rheological behavior of sonicated soy lecithin dispersions
2006
A significant effect, on the rheological behavior, due to the electrical properties of vesicles formed from concentrated soy lecithin dispersions have been studied in this work. The rheopectic behavior of concentrated soy lecithin dispersions (120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 g L−1) prepared by swelling–light sonication–freezing–unfreezing procedure is studied and it is specially emphasized on the transition under steady shear from lamellar phase of planar sheets to closed structures as multilamellar vesicles. Samples have been exposed to a different number of sonication cycles (from 0 to 100) and the changes in the hysteresis loop area, the apparent viscosity and the electrophoretic mobility hav…
