Analysis of Subcellular Components by Fluorescent-Lectin Binding and Flow Cytometry

2003

Because of their extensive availability and the wide spectrum of carbohydrates that may be specifically bound, lectins have become essential reagents for detection and quantitation of glycoconjugates in solution and in cell surfaces, identification and separation of cells, and functional studies based on membrane properties (1,2).

The role of paraoxonase 1 (PON1) as an oxidation marker, in muscle improvement after increased beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in blood, in patients with …

2020

Various studies have concluded that in multiple sclerosis (MS) metabolic changes related to energy alterations are generated at the mitochondrial level. These changes produce loss of muscle mass and lead to high levels of oxidative stress related to low levels of the enzyme Paraoxonase 1 (PON1). The ketone bodies, mainly beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), restore this energetic alteration by improving muscular activity. This pilot study was conducted over 4 months with 51 patients diagnosed with MS, randomly divided into: an intervention group that received an isocaloric diet of a Mediterranean origin supplemented with 60 ml of coconut oil; and a control group that received the same base diet but …

Vitamin D Deficiency in Cushing’s Disease: Before and After Its Supplementation

2022

Background: The primary objective of the study was to assess serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] values in patients with Cushing’s disease (CD), compared to controls. The secondary objective was to assess the response to a load of 150,000 U of cholecalciferol. Methods: In 50 patients with active CD and 48 controls, we evaluated the anthropometric and biochemical parameters, including insulin sensitivity estimation by the homeostatic model of insulin resistance, Matsuda Index and oral disposition index at baseline and in patients with CD also after 6 weeks of cholecalciferol supplementation. Results: At baseline, patients with CD showed a higher frequency of hypovitaminosis deficiency (p = 0…

Glucocorticoid excess and COVID-19 disease

2020

AbstractThe pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is causing high and rapid morbidity and mortality. Immune system response plays a crucial role in controlling and resolving the viral infection. Exogenous or endogenous glucocorticoid excess is characterized by increased susceptibility to infections, due to impairment of the innate and adaptive immune system. In addition, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and thromboembolism are conditions overrepresented in patients with hypercortisolism. Thus patients with chronic glucocorticoid (GC) excess may be at high risk of developing COVID-19 infection with a sever…
