Learning from the Past : The Women Writers Project and Thirty Years of Humanities Text Encoding

2017

In recent years, intensified attention in the humanities has been paid to data: to data modeling, data visualization, “big data”. The Women Writers Project has dedicated significant effort over the past thirty years to creating what Christoph Schöch calls “smart clean data”: a moderate-sized collection of early modern women’s writing, carefully transcribed and corrected, with detailed digital text encoding that has evolved in response to research and changing standards for text representation. But that data—whether considered as a publication through Women Writers Online, or as a proof of the viability of text encoding approaches like those expressed in the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Gu…

Abstract: The work in prose by Joan Roís de Corella is characterized by the incorporation of poetry. J.C. Maier – ein bereits bekannter Helfer Bluhmes bei der Transkription des Veroneser Codex Iustinianus

2018

J.C. Maier – a previously known aide to Bluhme in the transcription of the Veronese palimpsest of Justinian’s Code. This paper calls into question the idea that in the summer of 1823 Maier worked together with Bluhme at the decipherment of the palimpsest of Gaius’ Institutes preserved in the Capitular Library of Verona (Verona, B. Cap., Cod. XV). A comprehensive analysis of the sources leads to the conclusion that Maier helped Bluhme in the same library for the transcription of the palimpsest of Justinians’ Code (Verona, B. Cap., Cod. LX). – Keywords: Bluhme; Maier; Gaius’ Institutes; Verona, B. Cap., Cod. XV; Codex Iustinianus; Verona, B. Cap., Cod. LX; manuscript studies.

Full field of view super-resolution imaging via two static masks

2008

The usage of two static gratings for obtaining super resolved imaging dates back to the work by Bachl and Lukosz in 1967. However, in that approach, a severe reduction in the field of view was the necessary condition for improving the resolution. In this paper we present two approaches that are also based upon two static gratings but without the need to sacrifice in the field of view. The key idea for not paying with the field of view is performed in two ways: First, by using white light illumination that averages the ghost images obtained outside the region of interest since the positions of those images are wavelength dependent. Second, by using two random functions for the encoding and t…

Error and Uncertainty Analysis of the Residual Stresses Computed by Using the Hole Drilling Method

2010

:  The hole-drilling method is one of the most used techniques for the experimental analysis of the residual stresses in mechanical components. For both through-thickness uniform and non-uniform residual stress distributions, its application is standardised by the ASTM E837-08. In accordance with the ASTM limitations, the analysis of uniform residual stresses, to which the present work deals with, leads in general to results with a maximum bias of about 10%. Unfortunately, in general the user does not have appropriate procedures to estimate the actual stress error; consequently, if one or more of the experimental influence parameters fall out of the corresponding standard limitations, the c…

Human traffickers frequently take advantage of operative protocols that make them unpunishable pursuant the Italian Criminal Law because according to Art. 6 of the Italian Penal Code and International Convention on the High Sea jurisdictional powers cannot be exercised when the conduct is committed on the High Sea. So illustrating the territorial limitations of the efficacy of Criminal Law the research focuses on the hermeneutical solution given by the Court of Cassation that apparently with the intent of pursuing a more effectivity of the Criminal response recurred to the controversial category of the indirect offender in order to sanction smuggling conducts that enjoy the rescue intervention of the Italian authorities to reach their criminal aims. In turn in order to better identify the Italian jurisdiction in the crime of Art. 12 T.U. imm. I propose to correctly apply the concorso di persone (art. 110 c.p.) and the reato eventualmente permanente. The difficulties of a dogmatic framing together with the trend towards a universalistic validity of the jurisdictional powers when human rights are involved may recommend an interpretation of Art. 7 of the Italian Penal Code to cover a wider protection of human rights according to interpretive solutions of § 6 of the German Penal Code.Settore IUS/17 - Diritto Penale

Long-term working memory and interrupting messages in human – computer interaction

2004

The extent to which memory for information content is reliable, trustworthy, and accurate is crucial in the information age. Being forced to divert attention to interrupting messages is common, however, and can cause memory loss. The memory effects of interrupting messages were investigated in three experiments. In Experiment 1, attending to an interrupting message decreased memory accuracy. Experiment 2, where four interrupting messages were used, replicated this result. In Experiment 3, an interrupting message was shown to be most disturbing when it was semantically very close to the main message. Drawing from a theory of long-term working memory it is argued that interrupting messages ca…

L'edizione critica digitale. La critica del testo nella storia della tradizione

2019

The traditional output of philological work aiming at the constitutio textus is the print critical edition with apparatus footnotes showing select variant readings. The digital scholarly edition, instead, is not constrained by the space limits of the printed page, so it can encode and visualize synoptically many versions of a text, as found in different textual witnesses. This opportunity has often been exploited by New Philology editions, in which textual versions are juxtaposed without any attempt to reconstruct an "original" text. However, the digital critical edition can constitute a "third way" between constitutio textus and New Philology: the digital editor can provide different versi…

Prediction of BOD5 content of the inflow to the treatment plant using different methods of black box - the case study

2020

The publication presents the possibility of modeling in a 1 d advance of the content of organic compounds in the influent wastewater to the treatment plant, where the content of these compounds is determined by both the biochemical and chemical oxygen demand. To predict the quality of the wastewater at the inflow a set of indicators where used to make measurements on a daily basis. In order to develop statistical models 3 methods where used, namely: multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), boosted trees (BT), and genetic programming (GP). The carried-out calculations showed that, to calculate the BOD5 there can only be used models developed on the basis of the value of daily wastewa…

A Tsetlin Machine with Multigranular Clauses

2019

The recently introduced Tsetlin Machine (TM) has provided competitive pattern recognition accuracy in several benchmarks, however, requires a 3-dimensional hyperparameter search. In this paper, we introduce the Multigranular Tsetlin Machine (MTM). The MTM eliminates the specificity hyperparameter, used by the TM to control the granularity of the conjunctive clauses that it produces for recognizing patterns. Instead of using a fixed global specificity, we encode varying specificity as part of the clauses, rendering the clauses multigranular. This makes it easier to configure the TM because the dimensionality of the hyperparameter search space is reduced to only two dimensions. Indeed, it tur…
