Improving Karhunen-Loeve based transform coding by using square isometries

We propose, for an image compression system based on the Karhunen-Loeve transform implemented by neural networks, to take into consideration the 8 square isometries of an image block. The proper isometry applied puts the 8*8 square image block in a standard position, before applying the image block as input to the neural network architecture. International audience; Here we describe a spontaneous mutation in the Zdhhc13 (zinc finger, DHHC domain containing 13) gene (also called Hip14l), one of 24 genes encoding palmitoyl acyltransferase (PAT) enzymes in the mouse. This mutation (Zdhhc13luc) was identified as a nonsense base substitution, which results in a premature stop codon that generates a truncated form of the ZDHHC13 protein, representing a potential loss-of-function allele. Concurrent and Distributed Projection through Local Interference for Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper we use a gossip algorithm to obtain the projection of the observed signal into a subspace of lower dimension. Gossip algorithms allow distributed, fast and efficient computations on a Wireless Sensor Network and they can be properly modified to evaluate the sought projection. By combining computation coding with gossip algorithms we proposed a novel strategy that leads to important saving on convergence time as well as exponentially decreasing energy consumption, as the size of the network increases.
Some thoughts about the conceptual / procedural distinction in translation: a key-logging and eye-tracking study of processing effort

This article builds on the conceptual / procedural distinction postulated by Relevance Theory to investigate processing effort in translation task execution. Drawing on relevance-theoretic assumptions, it assumes that instances related to procedural encodings will require more effortful processing not only in relation to the time spent on the task but also in terms of product indicators such as seconds per word and number of micro translation units per word. From 1850 to 1868, the Sicilian economist Francesco Ferrara was editor-in-chief of the Biblioteca dell’Economista, a series of economic treatises – published in Italy and abroad – among the best known and most important of that period. Ferrara and his assistants, among whom was his friend Emerico Amari, translated scores of economic pages into Italian laying the foundation to the specialized translation in the economic field. They also contributed to the development and further specialization of an Italian economic lexicon. Detection and visualization of physical knots in macromolecules

Abstract This manuscript provides a pedagogical introduction on how to determine and visualize simple physical knots occurring in polymers, proteins and DNA. We explain how the Alexander polynomial is computed and implemented in a simulation code, and how the structure can be simplified beforehand to save computer time. The concept of knottedness can also be extended in a statistical framework to chains which are not closed. The latter is exemplified by comparing statistics of knots in open random walks and closed random loops.
