Conserved Structure and Promoter Sequence Similarity in the Mouse and Human Genes Encoding the Zinc Finger Factor BERF-1/BFCOL1/ZBP-89

Abstract We have characterized the genomic structure of the mouse Zfp148 gene encoding Beta-Enolase Repressor Factor-1 (BERF-1), a Kruppel-like zinc finger protein involved in the transcriptional regulation of several genes, which is also termed ZBP-89, BFCOL1. The cloned Zfp148 gene spans 110 kb of genomic DNA encompassing the 5′-end region, 9 exons, 8 introns, and the 3′-untranslated region. The promoter region displays the typical features of a housekeeping gene: a high G+C content and the absence of canonical TATA and CAAT boxes consistent with the multiple transcription initiation sites determined by primary extension analysis. Modelling of Orientational Ordering in Lipid Monolayers

Lipid monolayers at high densities are modelled as rigid rods grafted to an interface at the sites of a regular lattice. The transition between the state where the rods are uniformly tilted to a disordered state with no (average) tilt is studied by computer simulation methods. For the one-dimensional model, the molecular dynamics approach is found much less suitable to equilibrate the system rather than Monte Carlo methods. Both in d=2 discretized versions of Monte Carlo codes are much more efficient than continuum Monte Carlo methods, in spite of huge storage requirements. Learning From Errors: Detecting Cross-Technology Interference in WiFi Networks

In this paper, we show that inter-technology interference can be recognized using commodity WiFi devices by monitoring the statistics of receiver errors. Indeed, while for WiFi standard frames the error probability varies during the frame reception in different frame fields (PHY, MAC headers, and payloads) protected with heterogeneous coding, errors may appear randomly at any point during the time the demodulator is trying to receive an exogenous interfering signal. FULL MONOIDS AND MAXIMAL CODES

In recent years codes that are not Uniquely Decipherable (UD) were studied partitioning them in classes that localize the ambiguities of the code. A natural question is how we can extend the notion of maximality to codes that are not UD. In this paper we give an answer to this question. To do this we introduce a partial order in the set of submonoids of a free monoid showing the existence, in this poset, of maximal elements that we call full monoids. Then a set of generators of a full monoid is, by definition, a maximal set. A coding partition of a set of words partitions this set into classes such that whenever a sequence, of minimal length, has two distinct factorizations, the words of these factorizations belong to the same class. Tower sets and other configurations with the Cohen-Macaulay property

Abstract Some well-known arithmetically Cohen–Macaulay configurations of linear varieties in P r as k-configurations, partial intersections and star configurations are generalized by introducing tower schemes. Tower schemes are reduced schemes that are a finite union of linear varieties whose support set is a suitable finite subset of Z + c called tower set. We prove that the tower schemes are arithmetically Cohen–Macaulay and we compute their Hilbert function in terms of their support.
