PALERMO NEL QUADERNO DI VIAGGIO IN SICILIA DI NICODEMUS TESSIN (1674)

2019

In 1674 the Swedish architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, during his short journey to Sicily, visited Palermo, where he stayed only for three days. Yet he had the opportunity to spend some of his time visiting the city and keeping a journal, a notebook characterized by concise writing, but where brief notes of whatever he found interesting or peculiar elements (such as monuments, marble statues and fountains, architectural furniture ecc.) and therefore the journal witnesses indeed what a young XVIIth century architect, destined to the future role of royal architect, could select and choose.Tessin's further observations are directed towards painting, along with extremely useful information…

Nipple-sparing mastectomy and breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric perforator flap using thoracodorsal recipient vessels and a low l…

2018

Background Nipple-sparing mastectomy poses challenges in providing esthetically-pleasing immediate autologous breast reconstruction. This study was to investigate the outcomes of nipple-sparing mastectomy with breast reconstruction using free abdominal flaps between two different recipient sites. Methods Between 2010 and 2016, 79 patients who underwent nipple-sparing mastectomy with autologous breast reconstruction using thoracodorsal (TD) vessels in 30 cases or internal mammary (IM) vessels in 49 cases were investigated. Demographics, intraoperative findings, complications, and quality of life using Breast-Q questionnaire were compared between two groups. Results All flap survived. There w…

Mutual-information based rate-adaptation for Multi-User TH-IR-UWB coded system

2011

In this paper we present a coding rate adaptation technique for a Time-Hopping Impulse-Radio Ultra-Wide Band (TH-IR-UWB) system assuming that the Multi-User Interference (MUI) is modeled as an additive interference noise following a Generalized Gaussian Distribution (GGD). The shape parameter induced by the GGD model is in general time-variant since it strongly depends on the essential UWB system parameters and the received signal power of the active users. In this paper, we show that the performance of a TH-IR-UWB LDPC coded system is quite independent of the GGD shape parameter when we consider the mutual information between the soft input to the decoder and the transmitted sequence, espe…

A nonsense mutation abrogates production of a functional enterotoxin A in Clostridium difficile toxinotype VIII strains of serogroups F and X.

1999

Clostridium difficile strains of toxinotype VIII from serogroups F and X are described as toxin B-positive, toxin A-negative (TcdB+ A-), although they harbour almost the entire tcdA gene. To identify the reason for the lack of TcdA detection, we analyzed catalytic and ligand domains of TcdA-1470 of the type strain of serogroup F, strain 1470. Using recombinant fragments, the C-terminal immunodominant ligand domain TcdA3-1470, spanning amino acid residues 1694-2711 (corresponding to VPI 10463 sequence), was detected in Western blots. Similar experiments using the recombinant N-terminal catalytic fragment TcdAc1-2-1470 (amino acid positions 1-544) failed. In addition, this fragment showed no …

Taxas de substituições das Annonaceas: uma perspectiva do modelo códon

2014

The Annonaceae includes cultivated species of economic interest and represents an important source of information for better understanding the evolution of tropical rainforests. In phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data that are used to address evolutionary questions, it is imperative to use appropriate statistical models. Annonaceae are cases in point: Two sister clades, the subfamilies Annonoideae and Malmeoideae, contain the majority of Annonaceae species diversity. The Annonoideae generally show a greater degree of sequence divergence compared to the Malmeoideae, resulting in stark differences in branch lengths in phylogenetic trees. Uncertainty in how to interpret and analyse these…

The fitness effects of synonymous mutations in DNA and RNA viruses.

2011

Despite being silent with respect to protein sequence, synonymous nucleotide substitutions can be targeted by natural selection directly at the DNA or RNA level. However, there has been no systematic assessment of how frequent this type of selection is. Here, we have constructed 53 single random synonymous substitution mutants of the bacteriophages Qb and UX174 by site-directed mutagenesis and assayed their fitness. Analysis of this mutant collection and of previous studies undertaken with a variety of single-stranded (ss) viruses demonstrates that selection at synonymous sites is stronger in RNA viruses than in DNA viruses. We estimate that this type of selection contributes approximately …

Visual information flow in Wilson-Cowan networks.

2020

In this paper, we study the communication efficiency of a psychophysically tuned cascade of Wilson-Cowan and divisive normalization layers that simulate the retina-V1 pathway. This is the first analysis of Wilson-Cowan networks in terms of multivariate total correlation. The parameters of the cortical model have been derived through the relation between the steady state of the Wilson-Cowan model and the divisive normalization model. The communication efficiency has been analyzed in two ways: First, we provide an analytical expression for the reduction of the total correlation among the responses of a V1-like population after the application of the Wilson-Cowan interaction. Second, we empiri…

BANΔIT: B’‐factor Analysis for Drug Design and Structural Biology

2020

The analysis of B‐factor profiles from X‐ray protein structures can be utilized for structure‐based drug design since protein mobility changes have been associated with the quality of protein‐ligand interactions. With the BANΔIT (B’‐factor analysis and ΔB’ interpretation toolkit), we have developed a JavaScript‐based browser application that provides a graphical user interface for the normalization and analysis of B’‐factor profiles. To emphasize the usability for rational drug design applications, we have analyzed a selection of crystallographic protein‐ligand complexes and have given exemplary conclusions for further drug optimization including the development of a B’‐factor‐supported pha…
