Hemodilution in isolated tumor perfusion.

1984

Experiments are performed to study the influence of local hemodilution on tumor blood flow, oxygen availability in tumor tissue and O2 consumption of cancer cells. The results obtained clearly show that hemodilution in isolated tumor perfusion can distinctly improve nutritive blood flow through solid tumors. This can be utilized to enhance pharmacokinetics of antitumor drugs. Due to the improved metabolic status, the pharmacodynamics of some antitumor drugs should also be enhanced. To achieve a maximum improvement of the O2 supply to the tumor, hematocrit values should not be decreased below 0.20.

Struggling with L2 alphabet: The role of proficiency in orthographic learning

2023

The present study examined the process of L2 orthographic learning in bilinguals with distant L1–L2 orthographies. Chinese–English bilinguals with various English proficiency levels were trained with novel L2 words during a reading task. In contrast to higher proficient learners, those with lower L2 proficiency exhibited increased effects of length, frequency, and lexicality across exposures and at-chance recognition of trained words. Importantly, an additional post-training task assessing the lexical integration of trained words evidenced the engagement in different L1–L2 reading strategies across different levels of L2 proficiency, hence suggesting the L1 holistic processing at the base …

Whither the species? Phytophthora taxa, MOTUs and barcodes in the world of metagenomics

2015

The study of ecosystem diversity is being transformed by high throughput sequencing technology that allows an unparalleled depth of sampling of DNA barcode sequences. The opportunities are great at this fascinating interface of pathology, ecology, taxonomy and molecular biology but there are pitfalls. It is important to consider the potential for bias at all steps in the process from sampling through to data analysis. Increasingly Phytophthora diversity is being examined by metabarcoding of the PCR amplified rDNA ITS regions from soil, water or plant sample DNA. We have applied baiting and isolation, cloning and Sanger sequencing and Illumina MiSeq analysis to a time-series of filtered wate…

Risk of failure for the salso river railroad steel bridge

2020

Abstract The degradation state of railroad steel bridges is one of the most important and difficult aspects to be interpreted. The use of steel bridges started from 1900, and they are still in service today as railroad bridges. The case study examined was that of a bridge railroad steel bridge having a total length of 112 m and constituted by three isostatic, reticular beams having a Pratt type composition. The substructures (two shoulders and two intermediate piles) are in masonry with a reinforced concrete beam in the upper portion. The structure (steel bridge and piers) is in a degraded state. To determine the degradation level, non-destructive and partially destructive tests were carrie…

Affine camera calibration from homographies of parallel planes

2010

This paper deals with the problem of retrieving the affine structure of a scene from two or more images of parallel planes. We propose a new approach that is solely based on plane homographies, calculated from point correspondences, and that does not require the recovery of the 3D structure of the scene. Neither vanishing points nor lines need to be extracted from the images. The case of a moving camera with constant intrinsic parameters and the one of cameras with possibly different parameters are both addressed. Extensive experiments with both synthetic and real images have validated our approach.

Image Compression by 2D Motif Basis

2011

Approaches to image compression and indexing based on extensions to 2D of some of the Lempel-Ziv incremental parsing techniques have been proposed in the recent past. In these approaches, an image is decomposed into a number of patches, consisting each of a square or rectangular solid block. This paper proposes image compression techniques based on patches that are not necessarily solid blocks, but are affected instead by a controlled number of undetermined or don't care pixels. Such patches are chosen from a set of candidate motifs that are extracted in turn from the image 2D motif basis, the latter consisting of a compact set of patterns that result from the autocorrelation of the image w…

The late Messinian "Lago-Mare" event and the Zanclean Reflooding in the Mediterranean Sea: New insights from the Cuevas del Almanzora section (Vera B…

2020

Abstract The return to normal marine conditions in the Mediterranean Sea after the end of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC), that led to the deposition of thick evaporitic succession followed by settlement of brackish to freshwater conditions of the “Lago-Mare”, is still subject to extensive debate between two opposite scenarios. One scenario implies an abrupt reflooding through the Gibraltar gateway of the Mediterranean Sea previously disconnected from the world ocean and partly desiccated. The second scenario postulates that the Mediterranean Sea kept a high-water level throughout the Messinian Salinity Crisis and was connected continuously to the Atlantic Ocean and to the Paratethys. PALEOENVIRONMENTAL RECONSTRUCTION ON LATE CALABRIAN STAGE SEDIMENTS FROM THE BELICE VALLEY (SOUTHWESTERN SICILY - ITALY) BASED ON OSTRACODA

2022

The Middle Pleistocene Transition is the most recent re-organization of the climate system, happened between 1.2 and 0.7 Ma. Marine sediments outcropping in Sicily have been a relevant source of information on the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental evolution of the Mediterranean Sea, over this time window. Among others, previous studies in Sicily identified and described the very cold phase and the marked sea level fall associated with the top MIS 22, which is lithologically expressed by a calcarenite bed colonized by the Arctica islandica northern guest. Here we investigate ostracod assemblages from marine sediments in the southwestern Sicily. Sediments, ascribed to the late Calabrian St…

2020

The present study aimed at measuring the levels of legacy and emerging contaminants in fillet samples from four demersal fish caught in two fishing sites from Southern Norway, in order to assess possible implications for food safety. Levels of organochlorine compounds (OCs), organophosphate pesticides (OPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDE), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in fillet from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), lemon sole (Microstomus kitt), and European flounder (Platichthys flesus) specimens. A negligible contamination by all the investigate…
