A molecular study of Neophyllaphis varicolor (Hemiptera, Aphididae) in Costa Rica
2019
The genus Neophyllaphis (Takahashi) (Aphididae: Neophyllaphidinae) is composed of 18 species; however, in the Americas only nine species have been reported previously. A new species, Neophyllaphis varicolor Miller & Halbert, was described in 2014 in USA. Colonies resembling those of this new species have been observed in Costa Rica on Podocarpus spp. In order to determine if N. varicolor is also present in Costa Rica, we sampled Neophyllaphis colonies from Podocarpus falcatus and P. chinensis. Additionally, we sampled individuals from Podocarpus sp. in Spain and Vietnam. DNA of each sample was extracted and used to amplify and sequence the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and elongation…
The INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI System Point Spread Function and Source Location Accuracy
2003
The imager on board INTEGRAL (IBIS) presently provides the most detailed sky images ever obtained at energies above 30 keV. The telescope is based on a coded aperture imaging system which allows to obtain sky images in a large field of view 29deg x 29deg with an angular resolution of 12'. The System Point Spread Function of the telescope and its detailed characteristics are here described along with the specific analysis algorithms used to derive the accurate point-like source locations. The derived location accuracy is studied using the first in-flight calibration data on strong sources for the IBIS/ISGRI system. The dependence of the calibrated location accuracy with the signal to noise r…
Superresolved imaging of remote moving targets.
2006
We present a superresolving approach that allows one to exceed the diffraction limit and recover highly resolved contours of moving targets from a sequence of low-resolution images. The presented approach is suitable for remote sensing applications. The resolution decoding algorithm that is used to recover the high-resolution features of the target can be run partially via optical means and that way can be used to reduce the required computational complexity.

Perturbation vectors to evaluate air quality using lichens and bromeliads: a Brazilian case study.
2017
10 pages; International audience; Samples of one lichen species, Parmotrema crinitum, and one bromeliad species, Tillandsia usneoides, were collected in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at four sites differently affected by anthropogenic pollution. The concentrations of aluminum, cadmium, copper, iron, lanthanum, lead, sulfur, titanium, zinc, and zirconium were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy. The environmental diagnosis was established by examining compositional changes via perturbation vectors, an underused family of methods designed to circumvent the problem of closure in any compositional dataset. The perturbation vectors between the reference s…
Possible adverse impact of contaminants on Atlantic cod population dynamics in coastal ecosystems
2019
While many in-laboratory ecotoxicological studies have shown the adverse impact of pollutants to the fitness of an individual, direct evidence from the field on the population dynamics of wildlife animals has been lacking. Here, we provide empirical support for a negative effect of pollution on Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) population dynamics in coastal waters of Norway by combining unique time series of juvenile cod abundance, body size, environmental concentration of toxic contaminants and a spatially structured population dynamics model. The study shows that mercury concentration might have decreased the reproductive potential of cod in the region despite the general decline in the env…
Poly-ADP-Ribose (PAR) as an epigenetic flag
2009
Epigenetics is the study of hereditable chromatin modifications, such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and nucleosome-remodelling, which occur without alterations to the DNA sequence. The establishment of different epigenetic states in eukaryotes depends on regulatory mechanisms that induce structural changes in chromatin in response to environmental and cellular cues. Two classes of enzymes modulate chromatin accessibility: chromatin-covalent modifiers and ATP-dependent chromatin remodelling complexes. The first class of enzymes catalyzes covalent modifications of DNA as well as the amino- and carboxy-terminal tails of histones, while the second uses the energy of ATP hydrolysis …
On Codimensions of Algebras with Involution
2020
Let A be an associative algebra with involution ∗ over a field F of characteristic zero. One associates to A, in a natural way, a numerical sequence \(c^{\ast }_n(A),\)n = 1, 2, …, called the sequence of ∗-codimensions of A which is the main tool for the quantitative investigation of the polynomial identities satisfied by A. In this paper we focus our attention on \(c^{\ast }_n(A),\)n = 1, 2, …, by presenting some recent results about it.
Non-linear Local Polynomial Regression Multiresolution Methods Using $$\ell ^1$$-norm Minimization with Application to Signal Processing
2015
Harten’s Multiresolution has been developed and used for different applications such as fast algorithms for solving linear equations or compression, denoising and inpainting signals. These schemes are based on two principal operators: decimation and prediction. The goal of this paper is to construct an accurate prediction operator that approximates the real values of the signal by a polynomial and estimates the error using \(\ell ^1\)-norm in each point. The result is a non-linear multiresolution method. The order of the operator is calculated. The stability of the schemes is ensured by using a special error control technique. Some numerical tests are performed comparing the new method with…
