A performance study of LTE MIMO-OFDM systems using the extended one-ring MIMO channel model

2012

In this paper, we consider a long-term evolution (LTE) system for the downlink by using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques. The downlink channel is modeled by the socalled extended MIMO one-ring model. This model extends the well-known narrowband one-ring model with respect to frequency selectivity. The symbol error rate (SER) performance of the LTE MIMO-OFDM system is investigated for the downlink by employing different kinds of spatial encoders, where it is assumed that the channel state information (CSI) is perfectly known. For comparison, the space-time block coding (STBC) scheme, the vertical Bell Laboratories layered spac…

Codeswitching in the comedy of George Lopez

2011

This paper explores the intersectionality of language, culture and identity in the performance of a U.S.-born bilingual Spanish-English speaking comedian, George Lopez. Codeswitches in his comedy are examined through the speaker’s relationship to the audience using Bell’s (1984) theory of audience design. Two specific performances with two distinct audiences are compared using the following questions: How does a bilingual comedian, Lopez, use language mixing to underscore his Latino identity? How does he construct his audience through his choice of codes? How and when does he accommodate monolingual English speaking audiences? I conclude that Lopez intentionally matches his code choice to c…

Filter multiplexing by use of spatial Code Division Multiple Access approach.

2003

The increasing popularity of optical communication has also brought a demand for a broader bandwidth. The trend, naturally, was to implement methods from traditional electronic communication. One of the most effective traditional methods is Code Division Multiple Access. In this research, we suggest the use of this approach for spatial coding applied to images. The approach is to multiplex several filters into one plane while keeping their mutual orthogonality. It is shown that if the filters are limited by their bandwidth, the output of all the filters can be sampled in the original image resolution and fully recovered through an all-optical setup. The theoretical analysis of such a setup …

Single-channel polychromatic pattern recognition by the use of a joint-transform correlator.

2010

We present a single-channel system for color image recognition that is based on a joint-transform correlator setup. The color images are encoded as phase and amplitude functions, inspired from the Munsell color representation. A real-time implementation of the new codification method can be achieved by the use of a spatial light modulator operating in phase-only modulation mode. We determine the optimal codification for a linear color-phase code. Its performance is compared with a conventional multichannel correlator by means of computer simulations. Experimental results are also presented.

Super Resolution Methods Implementing Diffractive Masks Having a Certain Degree of Periodicity

2011

This section presents an approach that provides super resolved imaging at the center of the field of view and yet allows to see the remaining of the original field of view with original resolution. This operation resembles optical zooming while the zoomed and the nonzoomed images are obtained simultaneously. This is obtained by taking a single snap-shot and using a single imaging lens. The technique utilizes a special static/still coding element and a postprocessing algorithmic, without any mechanical movements.

Design of a real-time spectroscopic rotating compensator ellipsometer without systematic errors

2014

6th International Conference on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (ICSE), Kyoto, JAPAN, MAY 26-31, 2013; International audience; We describe a spectroscopic ellipsometer in the visible domain (400-800 nm) based on a rotating compensator technology using two detectors. The classical analyzer is replaced by a fixed Rochon birefringent beamsplitter which splits the incidence light wave into two perpendicularly polarized waves, one oriented at +45 degrees and the other one at-45 degrees according to the plane of incidence. Both emergent optical signals are analyzed by two identical CCD detectors which are synchronized by an optical encoder fixed on the shaft of the step-by-step motor of the compensato…

Finding near-perfect parameters for hardware and code optimizations with automatic multi-objective design space explorations

2012

Summary In the design process of computer systems or processor architectures, typically many different parameters are exposed to configure, tune, and optimize every component of a system. For evaluations and before production, it is desirable to know the best setting for all parameters. Processing speed is no longer the only objective that needs to be optimized; power consumption, area, and so on have become very important. Thus, the best configurations have to be found in respect to multiple objectives. In this article, we use a multi-objective design space exploration tool called Framework for Automatic Design Space Exploration (FADSE) to automatically find near-optimal configurations in …

Quantum Machine Learning: A tutorial

2021

This tutorial provides an overview of Quantum Machine Learning (QML), a relatively novel discipline that brings together concepts from Machine Learning (ML), Quantum Computing (QC) and Quantum Information (QI). The great development experienced by QC, partly due to the involvement of giant technological companies as well as the popularity and success of ML have been responsible of making QML one of the main streams for researchers working on fuzzy borders between Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science. A possible, although arguably coarse, classification of QML methods may be based on those approaches that make use of ML in a quantum experimentation environment and those others that take…

FPGA implementation of Spiking Neural Networks supported by a Software Design Environment

2011

Abstract This paper is focused on the creation of Spiking Neural Networks (SNN) in hardware due to their advantages for certain problem solving and their similarity to biological neural system. One of the main uses of this neural structure is pattern classification. The chosen model for the spiking neuron is the Spike Response Model (SRM). For SNN design and implementation, a software application has been developed to provide easy creation, simulation and automatic generation of the hardware model. VHDL was used for the hardware model. This paper describes the functionality of SNN and the design procedure followed to obtain a working neural system in both software and hardware. Designed VHD…

Signal detection for spread spectrum communication systems with gradient algorithm

2012

Retrieval process of original symbols of a spread spectrum based communication system is tried to be improved by Gradient Algorithm (GA) and Blind Source Separation (BSS) principles. Two simple schemes, based on two energy functions are presented. Time correlation properties of the channel are used as advantages in developing the filter coefficients for the receiver. Direct Sequence - Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) technique based system setup is used for algorithm testing purposes. This is identified as one of the most stable spread spectrum communication technique where most of the technologies developed for that are highly compatible with High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) transmis…
