PSEUDOANEURYSM OF SUPERIOR THYROID ARTERY FOLLOWING A TRANSESOPHAGEAL ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY: A CASE PRESENTATION

2017

The pseudo-aneurysm is an encapsulated hematoma of post-traumatic origin which is in communication with the lumen of the artery of relevance. We present a rare case of pseudo-aneurysm occurring after superior thyroid trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE) and external cardioversion. Singular occurrence in otolaryngology, if not recognized early a pseudo-aneurysm can result in dramatic events such cataclysmic bleeding or acute occlusion of the upper airway .

Acromion clavicular joint reconstruction with LArS ligament in acute dislocation

2019

Background: The acromion clavicular joint dislocations are common injuries of the shoulder. The severity is dependent upon the degree of ligamentous injury. Surgical treatment is typically performed in higher grade acromioclavicular separation with several static and dynamic operative procedures with or without primary ligament replacement. Methods: 47 patients with acute Rockwood type III, IV, and V injuries were treated surgically with LARS reconstruction. The success of technique was evaluated by radiographic outcomes for each patient at every follow-up visit (one, three, 12 months), while to assess pain reduction and clinical evaluation Visual Analogue scale score (VAS) and Constant-Murl…

From arsenic to DDT: Pesticides, Fascism and the invisibility of toxic risks in the early years of Francoist Spain (1939-1953)

2021

This paper reviews the way in which Spanish agriculture climbed onto the pesticide treadmill. We claim that Fascist policies and expert advice assembled in the early 1940s accelerated the introduction of pesticides into Spanish agriculture and promoted the emergence of the Spanish pesticide industry in the times of autarky. Agricultural engineers were the key protagonists in this process, but other human and non-human actors also played a pivotal role: a new pest (the Colorado beetle), Francoist politicians, farmers, landowners and industry managers. Our focus is on the use of pesticides against the Colorado beetle (the main threat to the potato crop), and the transition from arsenical pest…

Rosenbluth separation of the $\pi^0$ Electroproduction Cross Section off the Neutron

2017

We report the first longitudinal/transverse separation of the deeply virtual exclusive $\pi^0$ electroproduction cross section off the neutron and coherent deuteron. The corresponding four structure functions $d\sigma_L/dt$, $d\sigma_T/dt$, $d\sigma_{LT}/dt$ and $d\sigma_{TT}/dt$ are extracted as a function of the momentum transfer to the recoil system at $Q^2$=1.75 GeV$^2$ and $x_B$=0.36. The $ed \to ed\pi^0$ cross sections are found compatible with the small values expected from theoretical models. The $en \to en\pi^0$ cross sections show a dominance from the response to transversely polarized photons, and are in good agreement with calculations based on the transversity GPDs of the nucle…

A novel improved matlab-based software for the electric and magnetic analysis and design of rotating electrical machines

2015

The aim of this paper is to present a software for the analysis and design of windings of rotating electrical machines, considering both the electric and the magnetic specifications on the machine. The considered machines are induction motors (IM) and PM synchronous motors (PMSM). The software accounts for the case of buried magnets (IPMSM), but with some limits, because the calculations require a much more detailed analysis regarding the magnetic circuit. However, this initial limitation of the software, that will be removed in a later version, does not constitute a major limitation as confirmed by the examples presented in this paper.

Animal liberation, American anti-terrorist culture and Denis Hennelly’sBold Native

2016

ABSTRACTSince its birth in the last quarter of the twentieth century, the animal liberation movement has attempted to expose the transnational, global character of speciecism and institutionalised forms of exploitation. Within the American panorama, however, the “war against terror” following 9/11 had such a profound effect on (radical) activism at a legal and legislative level that the movement found itself in the position of having to reassess their focus, leading to theoretical and aesthetic responses to anti-terrorist rhetoric. The aim of this article is (1) to examine the manner by which anti-terrorist rhetoric affected the movement and how the movement appropriated such rhetoric to re…

Dating archaeological strata in the Magna Mater temple using solid-state voltammetric analysis of leaded bronze coins

2017

[EN] The application of solid state electrochemistry techniques for dating archaeological strata using lead-containing bronze coins is described. The proposed methodology was applied to samples coming from the Roman archaeological site of Magna Mater Temple (Rome, Italy) occurring in different strata dating back between the second half and the end of the 4(th) century A.D. and the 20(th) century. The voltammetric signatures of copper and lead corrosion products in contact with aqueous acetate buffer, as well as the catalytic effects produced on the hydrogen evolution reaction, were used for establishing the age of different strata and dating coins belonging to unknown age. Voltammetric data…

Data from: Minor environmental concentrations of antibiotics can modify bacterial virulence in co-infection with a non-targeted parasite

2018

Leakage of medical residues into the environment can significantly impact natural communities. For example, antibiotic contamination from agriculture and aquaculture can directly influence targeted pathogens, but also other non-targeted taxa of commensals and parasites that regularly co-occur and co-infect the same host. Consequently, antibiotics could significantly alter interspecific interactions and epidemiology of the co-infecting parasite community. We studied how minor environmental concentration of antibiotic affects the coinfection of two parasites, the bacterium Flavobacterium columnare and the fluke Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, in their fish host. We found that antibiotic in feed…

Mucin 1 downregulation associates with corticosteroid resistance in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps

2013

Background A number of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) are resistant to oral corticosteroids. Mucin 1 (MUC1) shows anti-inflammatory properties, and its cytoplasmic tail (CT) interacts with transcription factors, facilitating their nuclear translocation. Because glucocorticoid receptor (GR) nuclear translocation is key to the anti-inflammatory effect of corticosteroids, we hypothesized that MUC1 is involved in the effectiveness of corticosteroids. Objective To analyze the role of MUC1 in corticosteroid effectiveness in different cohorts of patients with CRSwNP and elucidate the possible mechanisms involved. Methods Seventy-three patients with CRSwNP took oral…

Anti-inflammatory activity of two cucurbitacins isolated from Cayaponia tayuya roots.

2004

Fractionation of an anti-inflammatory extract from Cayaponia tayuya roots yielded two active compounds, identified as 23,24-dihydrocucurbitacin B (1) and cucurbitacin R (2). Both were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity on several experimental models of pain and inflammation. In addition, their cytotoxicity and effects on leukotriene B 4 (LTB 4 ) formation were evaluated in rat polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Both compounds showed activity in the following models: carrageenan-induced mouse paw oedema (1, 4 mg/kg p.o., 46% inhibition at 3 h), phospholipase A 2 -induced mouse paw oedema (2, 3 mg/kg i.p., 61% inhibition at 60 min), serotonin-induced mouse paw oedema (1 and 2, 0.5 mg/k…
