Partial Discharges analysis and parameters identification by continuous Ant Colony Optimization

2008

The technique of ant colony optimization has been employed in this paper to efficiently deal with the problem of parameters identification in partial discharge, PD, analysis. The latter is a continuous optimization problem. From the technical point of view the identification of these parameters allows the modeling of the phenomenon of Partial Discharges in dielectrics. In this way it is possible the early diagnosis of defects in Medium Voltage cable lines and components and thus it is possible to prevent possible outages and service interruptions. Analytically, the problem consists of finding the Weibull parameters of the Pulse Amplitude Distribution (PAD) distributions allowing the identif…

Survival of Erwinia amylovora in mature apple fruit calyces through the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state

2009

Aims:  Survival of Erwinia amylovora, causal agent of fire blight in pome fruits and other rosaceous plants, was monitored inside mature apples calyces under some storage conditions utilized in fruit. Methods and Results:  Apple fruit calyces inoculated with two E. amylovora strains and their respective GFP-marked strains were maintained at 26° and 5°C, and the effect of copper treatment was assayed at 0·01 and 0·1 mmol l−1 CuSO4. In nontreated apples at 26°C, part of the population of E. amylovora survived in the ‘viable but nonculturable’ (VBNC) state, whereas at 5°C the majority of the population retained culturability. In copper-treated apples, the whole population adopted the VBNC stat…

Steroidal saponins from the aerial parts of Cordyline fruticosa L. var. strawberries.

2019

A new sulfated steroidal derivative (fruticogenin A: 1-sulfo-australigenin-3-sodium sulphate, 1) and three new steroidal saponins named fruticoside K (3-sulfo-spirostan-25(27)-ene-1β,3β-diol-1-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-β-D-fucopyranoside], 2), fruticoside L (3-sulfo-spirostan-25(27)-ene-1β,3β,6α-triol-1-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-β-D-fucopyranoside], 3) and fruticoside M (spirostan-25(27)-ene-1β,3α-diol-1-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-α-L-rhamnopyranoside], 4) were isolated from the aerial parts of Cordyline fruticosa L. var. strawberries. Their structures were established on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR data, mass spectrometry and chemical methods. Compounds 2 and 4 exhibited weak …

ESMO Consensus Guidelines for management of patients with colon and rectal cancer. A personalized approach to clinical decision making

2012

Contains fulltext : 111010pub.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common tumour type in both sexes combined in Western countries. Although screening programmes including the implementation of faecal occult blood test and colonoscopy might be able to reduce mortality by removing precursor lesions and by making diagnosis at an earlier stage, the burden of disease and mortality is still high. Improvement of diagnostic and treatment options increased staging accuracy, functional outcome for early stages as well as survival. Although high quality surgery is still the mainstay of curative treatment, the management of CRC must be a multi-modal approach pe…

Hydro-MRT bei entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen - Eine koloskopisch-histologische Vergleichsstudie*

2001

PURPOSE To compare hydro-MRI with colonoscopy and biopsy specimen regarding the assessment of inflammatory activity and the differentiation of inflammatory bowel diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS After an oral bowel opacification using 1000 ml of a 2.5% mannitol solution and a rectal bowel opacification using 250-500 ml of a 0.9% saline solution, axial and coronal breath-hold sequences +/- Gd-DTPA (HASTE-["half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo"] and dynamic FLASH-["fast low angle shot"]) were acquired in 27 patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The enhancement of the bowel wall as well as morphological MRI findings were correlated with colonoscopy and biopsy specimens. By me…

Relationship between N-cycling communities and ecosystem functioning in a 50-year-old fertilization experiment.

2009

The relative importance of size and composition of microbial communities in ecosystem functioning is poorly understood. Here, we investigated how community composition and size of selected functional guilds in the nitrogen cycle correlated with agroecosystem functioning, which was defined as microbial process rates, total crop yield and nitrogen content in the crop. Soil was sampled from a 50-year fertilizer trial and the treatments comprised unfertilized bare fallow, unfertilized with crop, and plots with crop fertilized with calcium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, solid cattle manure or sewage sludge. The size of the functional guilds and the total bacterial community were greatly affected by …

Prevalence of the colonization of Helicobacter pylori among students of the school of dentistry, University of Granada, Spain

2016

Background The oral cavity is a reservoir for Helicobacter pylori, and occupations that involve close contact with it, like Dentistry, could entail a higher risk of colonization. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the length of stay at the School of Dentistry of the University of Granada could influence colonization by H. pylori, and to furthermore correlate colonization by H. pylori, with the state of oral health and oral hygiene habits. Material and Methods The study groups were: Group 1, 35 students of Odontology in their first year of studies; Group 2, the same 35 students when they were in their fifth academic year; Group 3, 35 students from University study programs unrelated wi…

I do not intend to speak about; just speak nearby. Riflessioni di Geografia culturale per Lidia Curti

2021

This article introduces a reflection on personal journeys, of dialogues and readings, with Lidia Curti. What is feminine writing? And, what lies behind the screen of representation? These aim at highlighting their political and positional nature within a way of thinking inspired by geographical studies and the feminist thought. So, an attempt to create the bonds for a reflection on the meaning of writing and translation, and on the sense of identity and alterity is made through the voices of authors like Morrison, Devi, and Spivak. It is in the border writing of postcolonial authors that we find a ‘space of in-between’ that allows what has been removed – a testimony of the Mediterranean mat…
