Predator Mixes and the Conspicuousness of Aposematic Signals
2003
Conspicuous warning signals of unprofitable prey are a defense against visually hunting predators. They work because predators learn to associate unprofitability with bright coloration and because strong signals are detectable and memorable. However, many species that can be considered defended are not very conspicuous; they have weak warning signals. This phenomenon has previously been ignored in models and experiments. In addition, there is significant within- and among-species variation among predators in their search behavior, in their visual, cognitive, and learning abilities, and in their resistance to defenses. In this article we explore the effects of variable predators on models th…
Combining Hexanoic Acid Plant Priming with Bacillus thuringiensis Insecticidal Activity against Colorado Potato Beetle
2013
Interaction between insect herbivores and host plants can be modulated by endogenous and exogenous compounds present in the source of food and might be successfully exploited in Colorado potato beetle (CPB) pest management. Feeding tests with CPB larvae reared on three solanaceous plants (potato, eggplant and tomato) resulted in variable larval growth rates and differential susceptibility to Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa toxin as a function of the host plant. An inverse correlation with toxicity was observed in Cry3Aa proteolytic patterns generated by CPB midgut brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) from Solanaceae-fed larvae, being the toxin most extensively proteolyzed on potato, followed…
Advances in three-dimensional integral imaging: sensing, display, and applications [Invited]
2013
Three-dimensional (3D) sensing and imaging technologies have been extensively researched for many applications in the fields of entertainment, medicine, robotics, manufacturing, industrial inspection, security, surveillance, and defense due to their diverse and significant benefits. Integral imaging is a passive multiperspective imaging technique, which records multiple two-dimensional images of a scene from different perspectives. Unlike holography, it can capture a scene such as outdoor events with incoherent or ambient light. Integral imaging can display a true 3D color image with full parallax and continuous viewing angles by incoherent light; thus it does not suffer from speckle degrad…
Full parallax three-dimensional display from Kinect v1 and v2
2016
We exploit the two different versions of Kinect, v1 and v2, for the calculation of microimages projected onto integral-imaging displays. Our approach is based on composing a three-dimensional (3-D) point cloud from a captured depth map and RGB information. These fused 3-D maps permit to generate an integral image after projecting the information through a virtual pinhole array. In our analysis, we take into account that each of the Kinect devices has its own inherent capacities and individualities. We illustrate our analysis with some imaging experiments, provide the distinctive differences between the two Kinect devices, and finally conclude that Kinect v2 allows the display of 3-D images …
Evolutionary Considerations in Potato Pest Management
2013
Incorporating our knowledge of fundamental evolutionary processes into pest control practices is essential for maximizing their efficiency. The insect pest complex of potato is characterized by a high degree of plasticity and adaptability. In particular, the Colorado potato beetle quickly expanded its host range to include cultivated potato, and has shown a remarkable ability to evolve resistance to a wide variety of chemicals. Another major pest of potatoes, the green peach aphid, is also very adaptable to insecticides. Both of these insects can also develop resistance to non-chemical methods of their suppression, such as biological control and crop rotation. In addition, understanding ins…
Piano col colore… !
2012
The chapter of the book deals with the subject of the Color Plans diffused in Italy. The discussion presents the reflections that develop in Italy since the seventies of the twentieth century and that will lead to the processing of so-called "Color plans". The essay examines …
Endomicroscopy of Colon Pathology
2007
Colorectal cancer is still one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in the Western world. Screening colonoscopy is widely accepted as the gold standard for early diagnosis of cancer. The prognosis for patients with colonic neoplasms is strictly dependent on the depth of infiltration and therefore depends on early detection of pre-invasive and neoplastic changes. Early detection makes it possible to cure the patient by means of immediate endoscopic resection.
Colonoscopic surveillance in inflammatory bowel disease: state of the art reduction of biopsies.
2011
Longstanding colitis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with an increased risk for intraepithelial neoplasia (IN). White light endoscopy (WLE) with 40–50 random biopsies has been promoted for surveillance but may miss a significant proportion of lesions. In addition, the yield of random biopsies to detect IN is low, and random biopsies are expensive, labor-intensive and distract from scrutinizing the colon. Chromoendoscopy with targeted biopsies has proven its superiority over WLE in multiple randomized trials. It has been incorporated into many national and international guidelines. Virtual chromoendoscopy techniques carry the potential to provide contrast enhancement withou…
Does transvaginal color Doppler sonography differentiate between developing and involuting ectopic pregnancies?
1995
The objective of this study was to assess the addition of transvaginal color Doppler imaging to transvaginal ultrasonography and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin values to differentiate between developin and involuting ectopic pregnancies. Forty surgically confirmed ectopic pregnancies were classified into developing or involuting according to histopathologic findings. Results were compared retrospectively with the plasma beta-human chorionic gonadotropin values as well as the resistive index and pulsatility index obtained in corpora lutea and peritrophoblastic flow in serial examinations. Student's t-test was used for comparison of means. Logistic regression analysis was applied to predic…
Reversible Colorimetric Probes for Mercury Sensing
2005
The selectivity and sensitivity of two colorimetric sensors based on the ruthenium complexes N719 [bis(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate)ruthenium(II) bis(tetrabutylammonium) bis(thiocyanate)] and N749 [(2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine-4,4',4' '-tricarboxylate)ruthenium(II) tris(tetrabutylammonium) tris(isothiocyanate)] are described. It was found that mercury ions coordinate reversibly to the sulfur atom of the dyes' NCS groups. This interaction induces a color change in the dyes at submicromolar concentrations of mercury. Furthermore, the color change of these dyes is selective for mercury(II) when compared with other ions such as lead(II), cadmium(II), zinc(II), or iron(II). The detection limit…
