AbstractIncreasing problems with antibiotic resistance has directed interest towards phages as tools to treat bacterial infections in the aquaculture industry. However, phage resistance evolves rapidly in bacteria posing a challenge for successful phage therapy. To investigate phage resistance in the fish pathogenic bacterium Flavobacterium columnare, two phage-sensitive, virulent wild-type isolates, FCO-F2 and FCO-F9, were exposed to phages and subsequently analyzed for bacterial viability and colony morphology. Virulent and nonvirulent Flavobacterium columnare colony morphologies: characterization of chondroitin AC lyase activity and adhesion to polystyrene

Aims:  Colony morphology variants of fish pathogenic Flavobacterium columnare were studied to clarify the role of colony morphology change in the virulence of the bacterium. Typical rhizoid colony (Rz) variants are virulent and moderately adherent, nonrhizoid rough (R) colony variants are nonvirulent and highly adherent, and soft colony (S) variants are nonvirulent and poorly adherent. Identification of metalloporphyrins extracted from the copper bearing black shale of fore sudetic monocline (Poland)

Abstract Metalloporphyrins were isolated from copper-bearing black shale ores. The shale originates from the Lubin copper mine (Poland). The porphyrins have been extracted by way of a Soxhlet apparatus, and then purified using column chromatography. In order to identify the extracted porphyrins complexes UV–Vis, mass spectrometry and EPR analytical techniques have been used.

Two interesting problems are considered for enriching the curriculum of the Strength of Materials course, in the light of recently developed functionally graded materials (FGMs), characterized with the smooth variation of the elastic modulus. These are problems associated with buckling of columns with variable flexural rigidity along the axis of the column. Dynamics of Vertebral Column Observed by Stereovision and Recurrent Neural Network Model

A new non-invasive method for investigation of movement of selected points on the vertebral column is presented. The registration of position of points marked on patient's body is performed by 4 infrared cameras. This experiment enables to reconstruct 3-dimensional trajectories of displacement of marked points. We introduce recurrent neural networks as formal nonlinear dynamical models of each point trajectory. These models are based only on experimental data and are set up of minimal number of parameters. Therefore they are suitable for pattern recognition problems.

AbstractStarting from methyl cycloheptatrienyl-1-carboxylate, 6-acylation was successfully achieved employing glutaryl chloride in the presence of AlCl3 under controlled reaction conditions to furnish keto carboxylic acid product. After protection of this keto carboxylic acid as tert-butyl ester, reagent-controlled enantioselective reductions delivered configuration-defined methyl-6-hydroxylalkyl cycloheptatriene-1-carboxylates with up to 80% ee. Whereas simple NaBH4 reduction of the keto carboxylic acid and subsequent lactonization afforded a methyl-6-tetrahydropyranonyl cycloheptatriene-1-carboxylate. Abstract Aqueous size-exclusion chromatography was used to analyse the elution behaviour of several standard ionic polymers, including poly( l -glutamic acid), sodium poly(styrene sulphonate) and poly(acrylic acid), different in nature and chain flexibility, as a function of the pH and ionic strength of the eluent. Two organic-based hydrophilic packings, Spherogel TSK PW4000 and Ultrahydrogel 250, were tested in order to select the optimal conditions of macromolecular separation, and the results obtained for each column were compared. Chromatography of metal chelates

The chromatographic behavior of metal bis(ethoxyethyl)dithiocarbamate was investigated. The chelates of 14 elements (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, Cd, Te, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi) could be preconcentrated from water with an on-line system and were shown to be suitable for C18-reversed-phase liquid chromatography. A quaternary solvent mixture with admixture of a surfactant was used as eluent, UV-detection was performed at 254 nm. Thermostating the column to 40° C resulted in a significant increase in chromatographic resolution and in a decrease of analysis time. The recovery of the chelates from the aqueous solutions as well as reproducibility of the results are very sensitive to pH changes.

Life-time studies with capillary electrochromatography columns operated under different conditions.

A test system has been established to permit the monitoring of the life-time performance of several reversed- phase capillary electrochromatography (CEC) columns. The retention factors, k(cec), peak symmetry coefficients, lambda(sym), and column efficiencies, N, of three neutral n-alkylbenzene analytes, namely ethyl-, n-butyl- and n-pentylbenzenes, were determined for Hypersil 3 microm n-octylsilica and n-octadecylsilica packed into CEC capillary columns of 100 microm I.D., with a packed length of 250 mm, and a total length of 335 mm.
