Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

2010

Contains fulltext : 87688.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) OBJECTIVE: Although twin and family studies have shown attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to be highly heritable, genetic variants influencing the trait at a genome-wide significant level have yet to be identified. As prior genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have not yielded significant results, we conducted a meta-analysis of existing studies to boost statistical power. METHOD: We used data from four projects: a) the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP); b) phase I of the International Multicenter ADHD Genetics project (IMAGE); c) phase II of IMAGE (IMAGE II); and d) the Pfizer-funded study from the…

Functional principal component analysis as a new methodology for the analysis of the impact of two rehabilitation protocols in functional recovery af…

2014

[EN] Background: This study addressed the problem of evaluating the effectiveness of two protocols of physiotherapy for functional recovery after stroke. In particular, the study explored the use of Functional Principal Component Analysis (FPCA), a multivariate data analysis in order to assess and clarify the process of regaining independence after stroke. Methods: A randomized double-blind controlled trial was performed. Thirteen subjects with residual hemiparesis after a single stroke episode were measured in both in- and outpatient settings at a district hospital. All subjects were able to walk before suffering the stroke and were hemodynamically stable within the first week after stroke…

Seminal plasma-induced suppression of the respiratory burst of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes.

1984

Summary: Based on recent findings indicating suppression of lymphocytic functions by seminal plasma (SP) we tested the effects of SP from men with normo- and oligozoospermia (n = 7, each) on the generation of luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and monocytes (Mo) stimulated in vitro with zymosan. We found a complete suppression of CL of PMN and Mo by undiluted SP's, 1,000-fold dilutions still induced ≥ 20 percent inhibition. There was no difference between normo- and oligozoospermic men in inhibition of CL both with PMN and Mo. Protein concentrations of SP's were closely the same; all SP were free of the complement components C4 and C3c. After dialy…

ELECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS ON FRICTION STIR WELDED AND LASER WELDED 6XXX ALUMINIUM ALLOYS T-JOINTS

2007

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) and Laser Welding (LW) can be successfully employed to weld aluminium alloys, in many cases overcoming the difficulties encountered with more conventional welding processes like MIG or TIG. The corrosion resistance of the welded joint remains, however, an important issue, especially in applications (like in aircrafts), where corrosion can induce structural failure: the weld region has often lower mechanical resistance in comparison with the parent material and a decrease in its corrosion resistance, especially when the corrosion damage can represent a potential crack initiation site, can be unacceptable in components design. In this work the corrosion resistance …

Extra tension at electrode-nanowire adhesive contacts in nano-electromechanical devices

2017

Abstract We report a strong tangential component of the reaction force at electrode to nanowire adhesive contact which was previously established using electrostatic attraction. The reaction force tangential component absolute value was found to be comparable to or even bigger than the corresponding normal component. This effect is important for understanding of the mechanics of nano-electromechanical devices. Both the experiment and the corresponding theory are presented. Fitting of the obtained analytical solutions to experimental data was used to measure the reaction force acting at the contact for several nanowire-electrode configurations.

0.48Tb/s (12x40Gb/s) WDM transmission and high-quality thermo-optic switching in dielectric loaded plasmonics

2012

We demonstrate Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM)-enabled transmission of 480Gb/s aggregate data traffic (12x40Gb/s) as well as high-quality 1x2 thermo-optic tuning in Dielectric-Loaded Surface Plasmon Polariton Waveguides (DLSPPWs). The WDM transmission characteristics have been verified through BER measurements by exploiting the heterointegration of a 60 mu m-long straight DLSPPW on a Silicon-on-Insulator waveguide platform, showing error-free performance for six out of the twelve channels. High-quality thermo-optic tuning has been achieved by utilizing Cycloaliphatic-Acrylate-Polymer as an efficient thermo-optic polymer loading employed in a dual-resonator DLSPPW switching structure, …

Continuous Broadband MWP True-Time Delay with PbS-PMMA and -SU8 waveguides

2016

[EN] A new microwave true-time delay (TTD) photonic unit based on the dispersion of PbS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) in a Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and the SU8 photoresist is presented. With this aim, the PbS-PMMA and PbS-SU8 nanocomposites are integrated on a silicon platform in the form of a planar and ridge waveguides, respectively. When PbS QDs on those structures are pumped below their band-gap, a phase shift and a temporal delay in an optically conveyed (at 1550 nm) microwave signal is performed. The results of these devices show potential benefits over current TTD technologies, since the proposed photonic waveguide structures allows real-time adjustment of the temporal delay by …

Effects of the indentation process on fatigue life of drilled specimens: optimization of the distance between adjacent holes

2016

The generation of permanent compressive stresses around the holes is recognized as a valuable mean to delay the onset and propagation of the defects and to extend the fatigue life of the mechanical components. In the work, a bilateral indentation process, performed on each side of the component, is widely used in order to create a residual circumferential stress field around the area to be drilled and that persists after the drilling operation. In order to evaluate the process parameters and to identify optimal geometric solutions, several static and fatigue tests are conducted on AW 6082-T6 aluminum alloy specimen where two holes are created. In particular, experimental tests on only drill…

Steady state and transient thermal-hydraulic characterization of full-scale ITER divertor plasma facing components

2008

Abstract In the frame of the activities related to ITER divertor R&D, ENEA CR Brasimone was in charge by EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement) to investigate the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the full-scale divertor plasma facing components, i.e. the outer vertical target, the inner vertical target and the dome-liner, both in steady state and during draining and drying transient. The investigation was performed by means of both experimental test campaigns performed at ENEA CR Brasimone and theoretical simulation developed in RELAP5 Mod.3.3 environment at the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo (DIN). This paper presents the achieved experimental results fo…

Reference Priors in a Variance Components Problem

1992

The ordered group reference prior algorithm of Berger and Bernardo (1989b) is applied to the balanced variance components problem. Besides the intrinsic interest of developing good noninformative priors for the variance components problem, a number of theoretically interesting issues arise in application of the proposed procedure. The algorithm is described (for completeness) in an important special case, with a detailed heuristic motivation.
