Screening of some rare endemic Italian plants for inhibitory activity on 5-lipoxygenase

2003

Abstract The extracts of four rare plants found on the islands of Sicily, Vulcano and Marettimo, Southern Italy, were screened for their inhibitory effect on the production of leukotriene B 4 by 5-lipoxygenase in intact cells. The methanol extracts of pods of Cytisus aeolicus and aerial parts of Thymus richardii were the most active extracts, inhibiting almost completely the leukotriene B 4 production at 200 and 50 μg/ml, respectively.

Antibacterial and antioxidant activities in Sideritis italica (Miller) Greuter et Burdet essential oils

2006

Sideritis italica (Miller) Greuter et Burdet is a widespread Lamiacea in the Mediterranean region used in traditional medicine. Essential oils were antibacterial against nine ATCC and as many clinically isolated Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Antibacterial activity was also found against Helicobacter pylori: a dose-dependant inhibition was shown between 5 and 25 microg/ml. The antibacterial activity of the oils was expressed as MICs (minimum inhibitory concentrations) and MBCs (minimum bactericidal concentrations). At a concentration between 3.9 and 250 microg/ml the oils showed a significant antibacterial effect against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In …

Shifting between cultural identities: The voice of preschool children

2018

Aim. The purpose of this research is to capture the shift between two cultural identities, for a group of Romanian children enrolled in a German teaching preschool class, and to closely analyze the impact on cultural identity components.
Methods. In this study 27 children, aged 3 to 6, were involved, together with their parents and two teachers. During one year of investigation, they were analyzed using participative observation, focus groups and in-depth interviews conducted in a public preschool.
Results. The analysis reveals witch cultural identity components of this children undergo transformation, in what amount and with what impact considering the school environmen…

Overview of the JET results with the ITER-like wall

2013

Following the completion in May 2011 of the shutdown for the installation of the beryllium wall and the tungsten divertor, the first set of JET campaigns have addressed the investigation of the retention properties and the development of operational scenarios with the new plasma-facing materials. The large reduction in the carbon content (more than a factor ten) led to a much lower Zeff (1.2-1.4) during L- and H-mode plasmas, and radiation during the burn-through phase of the plasma initiation with the consequence that breakdown failures are almost absent. Gas balance experiments have shown that the fuel retention rate with the new wall is substantially reduced with respect to the C wall. T…

Hydraulic analysis of EU-DEMO divertor plasma facing components cooling circuit under nominal operating scenarios

2019

Within the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 – “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by University of Palermo and ENEA to investigate the steady state thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling circuit, focussing the attention on its Plasma Facing Components (PFCs). The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the Finite Volume Method and adopting the commercial Computational Fluid-Dynamic code ANSYS-CFX. A realistic model of the PFCs cooling circuit has been analysed, specifically embedding each Plasma Facing Unit (PFU) cooling chann…

On the numerical assessment of the thermal-hydraulic operating map of the DEMO Divertor Plasma Facing Components cooling circuit

2020

Abstract Within the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 - “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by University of Palermo and ENEA to investigate the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system, focussing the attention on the 2018 configuration of the Plasma Facing Components (PFCs) circuit consistent with the DEMO baseline 2017. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the finite volume method and adopting the commercial Computational Fluid-Dynamic (CFD) code ANSYS CFX. A steady-state CFD analysis has been carried out for the …

Hydraulic assessment of an upgraded pipework arrangement for the DEMO divertor plasma facing components cooling circuit

2021

Abstract In the context of the Work Package DIVertor (WPDIV) of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been carried out by University of Palermo in cooperation with ENEA to assess the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cooling system, concentrating the attention on its 2019 Plasma Facing Components (PFCs) configuration, relevant to DEMO baseline 2017. The research activity has been performed following a theoretical-numerical technique based on the finite volume method and adopting the well-known ANSYS CFX CFD code. The PFCs cooling circuit thermal-hydraulic performances under nominal steady-state conditions, assessed mainly in terms of coolant total pressure drop, c…

Heavy ion and proton test site at JYFL-accelerator laboratory

1999

Abstract A radiation effects facility (RADEF) has been installed in the Accelerator Laboratory of the Department of Physics, University of Jyvaskyla (JYFL). The facility includes a special beam line dedicated to irradiation studies of semiconductor components and devices. It consists of a vacuum chamber including component movement apparatus and the necessary diagnostic equipment required for beam quality and intensity analysis. Construction of the station began in the summer of 1996, and in August 1997 the suitability of the station for space applications was evaluated. In this paper we introduce the accelerator laboratory along with the test station and its properties. We also describe th…

Comparative Antiproliferative and Antiangiogenic Activity of Cacao Preparations (P06-048-19)

2019

OBJECTIVES: Multiple lines of evidence show the benefits of cacao on inflammation and cardiovascular disease. The relationship between cacao and cancer is less well defined. Cacao contains bioactive compounds with antiangiogenic properties, such as procyanidins and catechins. Angiogenesis, blood vessel formation, is critical for tumor growth and validated target in cancer therapy. We studied the antiangiogenic and anti-tumorigenic potential of two commercially available 100% cacaos (Valrhona and De Zaan). METHODS: L5178y mouse lymphoma cells were incubated with different concentrations of cacao (0, 0.1, 0.3, 1, 3, and 10 µl/ml). The calorimetric methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (…

Modeling Changes for SHOIN(D) Ontologies: An Exhaustive Structural Model

2013

Ontology development starts with a rigorous ontological analysis that provides a conceptualization of the domain to model agreed by the community. An ontology, specified in a formal language, approximates the intended models of this conceptualization. It needs then to be revised and refined until an ontological commitment is found. Also ulterior updates, responding to changes in the domain and/or the conceptualization, are expected to occur throughout the ontology life cycle. To handle a consistent application of changes, a couple of ontology evolution methodologies have been proposed. Maintaining the structural consistency is one of the ontology evolution criteria. It implies modeling chan…
