Measuring environmental performance in the treatment of municipal solid waste: The case of the European Union-28

2021

Abstract This paper proposes a measure of environmental performance in the treatment of municipal solid waste, which is defined as a ratio between a composite indicator of waste treated through environmentally desirable operations –recycling and recovery in our case study– and a composite indicator of waste treated through undesirable operations –landfill and incineration. Moreover, it contributes both overall and treatment-specific indicators of performance. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) techniques are used to compute the environmental performance indicators and they are illustrated with an empirical assessment of the environmental performance of the European Union-28 (EU-28) members in …

Fibre extraction from oleaginous flax for technical textile applications: influence of pre-processing parameters on fibre extraction yield, size dist…

2017

International audience; Cultivated primarily for its seeds, oleaginous flax could also be valued for the different fractions that can be extracted from the straw. However, as the straws are not harvested with the same technique and care than for the textile flax, the classical scutching technique cannot be used. As a consequence, an “all fibre” device was used to perform the separation of the different constituents of the oleaginous flax straws. The different fractions were quantified for two retting levels and for two degrees of rewetting of the stems. The physical and mechanical properties of fibres were then evaluated. It appears that the relative amount of fibres extracted from oleagino…

Conifer Needles as Thermoplastic Composite Fillers: Structure and Properties

2016

This study describes the properties of thermoplastic polymer composites based on polyethylene (of low and high density) and ethylene-propylene copolymers using various types of conifer needles (pine, spruce, fir, and cedar) as fillers. For the needles, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TGA/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA/FTIR) were performed to investigate their structures and thermal resistance, as required for the composite processing methods. Moreover, structural differences were studied for the analyzed fillers and composite materials (FTIR). The results were compared with the values obtained for composites with conifer wood flour. Composites with conifer needles (pine) …

Utilization of lignin powder for manufacturing self-binding HDF

2017

Abstract The preparation of self-binding lignocellulosic fibreboards has been investigated. Different high-density fibreboards (HDF) were hot-pressed based on a mixture of grey alder (Alnus incana L. Moench) wood chips processed by steam explosion auto-hydrolysis (SE) and 15% or 25% lignin content from three different industrial sources: softwood kraft lignin (SWKL), soda wheat straw lignin (SoWhStL) and hydrolysis wheat straw lignin (HWhStL). Density, thickness swelling (TS) after immersion in water for 24 h, modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE) and strength of internal bond (IB) of the board samples were determined. The amount (15% or 25%) and moisture content (MC) (18±1%…

The cork viewed from the inside

2015

International audience; Cork is the natural material stripped from the outer bark of cork oak. It is still the most used stopper to seal wine bottles and to preserve wine during storage. Cork stoppers are sorted in different classes according to apparent defects, named lenticels, which can be related to the cork macroporosity. The more lenticels there are, the worst cork quality is. The present work aims at investigating defects analysis of cork stoppers from two classes by comparing images recorded by digital photography and neutron imaging. Surface analysis of defects obtained from photography leads to more surface defects in class 4 (6.7%) than in class 0 (4.1%). Neutron radiography and …

Dynamic goal programming synthetic indicator: an application for water companies sustainability assessment

2018

ABSTRACTThis study proposes to evaluate the sustainability of water companies through time by using a new approach, one that involves a dynamic synthetic indicator derived from goal programming techniques. This dynamic indicator approach incorporates catch-up and innovation indices, which enables one to identify the main factors that drive changes in sustainability through time. We used a case study approach to clarify this dynamic approach by evaluating indicator values from a sample of 129 Portuguese water companies over the 2012 to 2015 time period. For most of the water companies we evaluated, sustainability values changed over time, which illustrates the importance of evaluating dynami…

Study about Mechanical Properties of Materials Obtained by Thermoforming

2019

Plastic materials have played a very important role in the development of our modern civilization. It can be said that plastic materials are a tribute to man’s creativity and inventiveness. Plastic materials are the key to the innovation of many products and technologies in various sectors such as electrical and electronic equipment, packaging, civil engineering, agriculture, power generation, medical and pharmaceutical industry, aerospace and not last automotive industry. An increasingly important aspect in the automotive industry, in terms of fuel consumption is the lower weight of the components, while maintaining a very high stiffness. The difficulties of the design process of thermofor…

Regarding the influence of the particle size of crumb rubber from waste rubber on the physical and mechanical characteristics of reclaimed rubber

2017

Thus, at present, a large amount of rubber waste cannot be higher harnessed due to recovery technologies used. Also, the requirements for new products of rubber worldwide are greater than the production capacity and the availability of raw materials. To offset this balance is necessary to improve technologies for recycling waste rubber so to can get regenerated rubber with the best mechanical physical characteristics. The main technology for obtaining the regenerated rubber is based on the rubber waste shredding and making the powder, so that it can be carried out de-vulcanization in autoclave. All the time it was monitored as the de-vulcanization process to be as economical and less pollut…

Failure maps to assess bearing performances of glass composite laminates

2018

Aim of this article is the assessment of the bearing mechanical performances of pin-loaded glass laminates as function of their geometrical configuration. To this concern, 32 specimens having different hole diameter (D), laminate width (W), and hole center to laminate free edge distance (E) have been tested under bearing conditions. The maximum bearing stress and the stress-displacement curves were analyzed as function both of hole to laminate free edge distance E and hole diameter D. Moreover, an experimental 2D failure map was created by placing the experimental results (i.e., the kind of failure mechanism occurred for each geometrical configuration) in the plane E/D versus W/D ratios. In…

Weld quality prediction in linear friction welding of AA6082-T6 through an integrated numerical tool

2016

Abstract A numerical and an experimental campaign were carried out with varying oscillation frequency and interface pressure. The local values of the main field variables at the contact interface between the specimens were predicted by a Lagrangian, implicit, thermo-mechanical FEM model and used as input of a dedicated Neural Network (NN). The NN, integrated in the FEM environment, was designed in order to calculate both a Boolean output, indicating the occurrence of welding, and a continuous output, indicating the quality of the obtained solid state weld. The analysis of the obtained results allowed three different levels of bonding quality, i.e., no weld, sound weld and excess of heat, to…
