ON THE EFFECTS OF A CRACK PROPAGATING TOWARD THE INTERFACE OF A BIMATERIAL SYSTEM

This paper deals with the influence of matrix cracks on the failure mode of bimaterial systems and composite materials. In order to investigate such an influence, the stress field near a crack embedded into the more yielding material and propagating perpendicularly to the interface, has been analyzed by using systematic numerical simulations. Such analysis has shown that the crack propagation give rises to transversal stresses that can damage the reinforcing materials when this has low modulus, as glass fibers, or low transversal strength, such as carbon fibers. Halloysite Nanotubes Loaded with Calcium Hydroxide: Alkaline Fillers for the Deacidification of Waterlogged Archeological Woods

A novel green protocol for the deacidifying consolidation of waterlogged archaeological woods through aqueous dispersions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1500 and halloysite nanotubes containing calcium hydroxide has been designed. First, we prepared functionalized halloysite nanotubes filled with Ca(OH)2 in their lumen. The controlled and sustained release of Ca(OH)2 from the halloysite lumen extended its neutralization action over time, allowing the development of a long-term deacidification of the wood samples. Abstract Nanolime dispersed in 2-propanol was extensively used for the consolidation of wall paintings. The knowledge of the advances of this methodology dealing with all the possible effects associated with the nanolime new material in conservation is fundamental to assess and improve the technique. In this paper, four different dispersions of Ca(OH) 2 nanoparticles were characterised by Small Angle X-rays Scattering technique (SAXS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) in order to achieve information on size, shape, polydispersity, agglomeration, and crystal structure (by SAED patterns) of the particles. Efficient ultraviolet-light energy dissipation by an aromatic ketone.

Experimental evidence on the efficiency of 2,2'4,4'-tetramethoxybenzil for UV-light energy dissipation is provided. This non-phenolic aromatic ketone has a low energy triplet which quickly decays to the ketone ground state, thus avoiding the generation of undesirable reactive species. Modeling of Point Defects in Corundum Crystals

Several different approaches including Hartree-Fock ab initio cluster calculations, semiempirical INDO calculations, and atom-atom potentials were used for modeling of the spatial and electronic structure as well as migration mechanisms of both intrinsic defects (self-trapped and defect-trapped holes, O and Al vacancies) and impurities (transition-metal ions like Co, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ti). The atomic structure of all hole centers is found to be similar to V[sub K] centers in alkali halides (two-site model); their formation is energetically favorable. The energy required for 60[degree] hole reorientations inside the basic oxygen triangles is found to be similar to both the energy for hops between …
Dipolar and orientational glass formation in two-dimensional films of CO mixtures

Heat-capacity and dielectric measurements have been performed to study orientational and dipolar order and disorder phenomena in submonolayer films of CO and binary mixtures of CO physisorbed on graphite and boron nitride (BN). With both methods transitions to quadrupolar and dipolar ordered low-temperature phases have been found for pure CO. Calorimetric measurements revealed that the dipolar transition of CO on graphite belongs to the universality class of the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model. It will be shown that in dilute mixtures of CO with CH 4 molecules a dramatic suppression of this phase transition occurs. This effect turned out to be much stronger than that previously observed in…
