Temperature dependance of the generation and decay of E’ centers induced in silica by 4.7eV laser radiation

We report a study of the generation of silicon dangling bonds (E' centers) induced in fused silica by 4.7 eV laser irradiation in the 10 200 K the induced defects undergo a post-irradiation decay due to their reaction with mobile H(2). The interplay between generation and annealing gives rise to a bell-shaped temperature dependence of the concentration of induced E' centers, peaking at 250 K

Structural Health Monitoring Procedure for Composite Structures through the use of Artifcial Neural Networks

In this paper different architectures of Artifcial Neural Networks (ANNs) for structural damage detection are studied. The main objective is to investigate an ANN able to detect and localize damage without any prior knowledge on its characteristics so as to serve as a real-time data processor for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems. Two different architectures are studied: the standard feed-forward Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) ANNs. On the use of artificial intelligence tools for fracture forecast in cold forming operations

Abstract The design of cold forming processes requires the availability of a procedure able to deal with the prevention of ductile fracture. In fact, the ability to predict fracture represents a powerful tool to improve the production quality in mechanical industry. In this paper, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are applied to ductile fracture prediction in cold forming operations. The main advantage of the application of AI tools and in particular, of artificial neural networks (ANN), is the possibility to obtain a predictive tool with a wide applicability. The prediction results obtained in this paper fully demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach.

Arundo Donax particles as reinforcement for PLA based composites

Aim of this work was to use particles obtained by grinding the culms of Arundo Donax used as reinforcement for PLA based composites. The influence of the content (10 wt% and 20 wt%) and size (150-300 μm and 300-500 μm) of Arundo Donax filler (ADF) on the morphology and on the properties of PLA-ADF composites was evaluated. The composites were prepared by melt compounding the PLA with ADF using a co-rotating modular twin screw extruder. For comparison, neat PLA was processed under the same conditions. Both the neat PLA and the composites were characterized by SEM, DSC, tensile and flexural measurements.

Paleoceanography of the Late Cretaceous northwestern Tethys Ocean: Seasonal upwelling or steady thermocline?

In this study we attempted to assess whether seasonal upwelling or a steady thermocline persisted at the western margin of the Tethys Ocean during the late Turonian-early Coniacian interval. For this scope, we employed novel and published stable oxygen isotope (δ18O) data of various organisms (bivalves, bivalves, brachiopods, fish and belemnites). New seasonally resolved temperature estimates were based on the δ18O record of sequentially sampled inoceramid (Inoceramus sp.) and rudist (Hippurites resectus) shells from the Scaglia Rossa and Gosau deposits of northern Italy and western Austria, respectively. Sea Surface Temperature Fields Associated with West African Rainfall Anomaly Types

Abstract Four West African rainfall anomaly types are defined in relation to the northern summer rainfall departure signs in the Sahel and in the Guinean region in order to investigate the statistical links between interannual variability of West African rainfall and sea surface temperature (SST) through the period 1950–90. Composite analysis depicts the setup of four different mean SST anomaly fields. Drought over all of West Africa is associated with the growth of positive SST anomalies in the eastern Pacific and in the Indian Ocean, and negative SST anomalies in the northern Atlantic and in the Gulf of Guinea. Influence of gas environment on the dynamics of wetting transition of laser-textured stainless steel meshes

We analyze the role of surrounding gas and aging in ambient air in the wettability behavior of laser-processed stainless steel meshes. Laser texturing of meshes was carried out in the presence of different gases (N2, O2, CO2, Ar, and SF6) in ambient atmospheric air and under different vacuum conditions. The influence of each gas on the evolution of the wettability properties after aging in ambient air is analyzed. The effects of low-pressure and vacuum aging allowed transforming the initial superhydrophilic characteristics of the laser-structured meshes to an almost superhydrophobic state.

Relationships between strain, microstructure and oxide growth at the nano- and microscale

In the present article, the relationships between oxidation processes, surface strains and the microstructure of duplex stainless steels were investigated. Specimens were oxidized at 500 °C under secondary vacuum for 1 h to form a thin oxide film (thickness in the range of 20-50 nm). Such specimens were considered as the model system for developing novel methods of analysis in understanding the behavior of passive films. The interfacial strain field after oxidation was measured experimentally at the microscale using the point grid method.
