Analysis of the mechanical performance of hybrid (SPR/bonded) single-lap joints between CFRP panels and aluminum blanks

2013

Abstract The increasing use of innovative materials in manufacturing of modern mechanical components has led to the development of reliable joints between innovative (composite materials etc.) and traditional materials (steel, aluminum etc.). In the last few years, hybrid joints, combining the advantages of the adhesive joints and traditional mechanical joints as bolted or riveted joints, have been shown an increasing industrial interest especially in automotive and aerospace sectors. In the present paper a systematic experimental study of hybrid lap joints was carried out with the aim to detect the optimal joint configuration. Tensile tests on hybrid joints made by combining adhesive bondi…

Numerical-Analytical Model for Nanotube-Reinforced Nanocomposites

2013

A novel numerical model able to predict the elastic properties of carbon nanotube/polymer composites containing a random distribution of CNTs has been developed. The new technique, which takes into account of the curvature that the nanotubes show when immersed in the polymer, is based on a numerical-analytical approach that has significant advances over micromechanical modeling and can be applied to several kinds of nanostructured composites. The nature of carbon nanotube/polymer bonding has arisen as key factor in the efficacy of the carbon nanotubes to actually provide any enhanced stiffness or strength to the composite. Here the effects of carbon nanotube interface interaction with the m…

Reversible switching of the electronic ground state in a pentacoordinated Cu(ii) complex.

2013

International audience; An easy reversible switching of the electronic ground state in a pentacoordinated copper(ii) complex is reported for the first time. The simple protonation of a carboxylic group in a Cu(ii) complex with a {dx(2)-y(2)}(1) electronic configuration leads to a flip of the ground electronic configuration from {dx(2)-y(2)}(1) to {dz(2)}(1) in the metal ion.

Epicardial delivery of collagen patches with adipose-derived stem cells in rat and minipig models of chronic myocardial infarction.

2013

Although transplantation of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC) in chronic myocardial infarction (MI) models is associated with functional improvement, its therapeutic value is limited due to poor long-term cell engraftment and survival. Thus, the objective of this study was to examine whether transplantation of collagen patches seeded with ADSC could enhance cell engraftment and improve cardiac function in models of chronic MI. With that purpose, chronically infarcted Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 58) were divided into four groups and transplanted with media, collagen scaffold (CS), rat ADSC, or CS seeded with rat ADSC (CS-rADSC). Cell engraftment, histological changes, and cardiac function were …

Response of human chondrocytes to a non-uniform distribution of hydrophilic domains on poly (ethyl acrylate-co-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) copolymers.

2005

A series of polymer and copolymer networks with varying hydrophilicity and distribution of the hydrophilic groups was synthesized and biologically tested with monolayer culture of human chondrocytes in vitro. Cell viability (MTT), proliferation (BrdU incorporation) and aggrecan expression (PG ELISA) were quantified at 7 and 14 days from seeding. Both assays (MTT and BrdU) showed complementary results that are consistent with positive cellular adhesion on the material. When human chondrocytes were cultured on polymer substrates in which the hydrophilic groups were homogeneously distributed, hydrophobic substrates showed higher values in all the biological parameters analysed. Adhesion, proli…

Phenotypic redifferentiation and cell cluster formation of cultured human articular chondrocytes in a three-dimensional oriented gelatin scaffold in …

2013

Modern tissue engineering strategies comprise three elemental parameters: cells, scaffolds and growth factors. Articular cartilage represents a highly specialized tissue which allows frictionless gliding of corresponding articulating surfaces. As the regenerative potential of cartilage is low, tissue engineering-based strategies for cartilage regeneration represent a huge challenge. Prostaglandins function as regulators in cartilage development and metabolism, especially in growth plate chondrocytes. In this study, it was analyzed if prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) has an effect on the phenotypic differentiation of human chondrocytes cultured in a three-dimensional (3D) gelatin-based scaffold made …
