Systematic reasoning: Formal or postformal cognition?
1995
The focus of this study was to investigate the relationship between formal and postformal systematic metasystematic reasoning. Shayer's (1978) chemicals task and a modified version of Kuhn and Brannock's (1977) plant task were used to measure formal thinking and Commons, Richard, and Kuhn's (1982) multisystem task and balance-beam task to detect postformal reasoning. Subjects were university students from the humanities and social sciences (N=35). For each subject, a composite score was defined by taking into account the highest score in the tasks measuring the same developmental stage. Findings indicated that composite scores of formal and postformal reasoning were significantly correlated…
Comment on: A critical analysis of the internal logic in the Life-Space Assessment (LSA) composite score and suggested solutions
2016
Background:An individual’s ability to live independently is commonly measured in health research interested in identifying risk factors associated with disablement processes. In order to inform clinical practice, population research has attempted to identify the contraction of “lived-space” by using various survey instruments.Problem:Studies assessing habitual movements over the environment with the Life-Space Assessment (LSA) survey instrument should carefully consider how the LSA Composite Score (LSA-CS) is computed. Until now, no publication has carefully delineated the assumptions guiding the internal logic used in the computation of the LSA-CS.Core argument:Because the internal logic o…
Defining a reduced volume zone for the simulation of burst test on a composite pressure vessels
2018
International audience; A Fibre-Break Model (FBM) developed at Mines ParisTech can predict the burst pressure of high pressure composite vessels. This model uses random values of fibre strength at each Gauss point of the considered vessels meshed with finite element (FE). However, previous studies has determined the optimum FEs to be used on real-scale structures (0.1 mm x 0.1 mm x 8 mm). A simple calculation shows that, on a real-scale pressure vessel, this induces a gigantic number of FEs, hence the extensive computation time. To overcome this problem, the integral range method is proposed to find a reduced volume zone of the vessels, on which an equivalent calculation can be made and giv…
A computational aeroelastic framework based on high-order structural models and high-fidelity aerodynamics
2023
A computational framework for high-fidelity static aeroelastic analysis is presented. Aeroelastic analysis traditionally employs a beam stick representation for the structure and potential, inviscid and irrotational flow assumptions for the aerodynamics. The unique contribution of this work is the introduction of a high-order structural formulation coupled with a high-fidelity method for the aerodynamics. In more details, the Carrera Unified Formulation coupled with the Finite Element Method is implemented to model geometrically complex composite, laminated structures as equivalent bi-dimensional plates. The open-source software SU2 is then used for the solution of the aerodynamic fields. T…

Prove di coltivazione di Calendula (Calendula officinalis L.) in ambiente semi-arido
2008
Inside the family Asteraceae, Marigold is one of the most relevant species bearing some herbal interest. The evaluation of the bio-agronomical and yield response of the species to the field cropping conditions, especially when a low input cropping technique is applied, is the base for its full exploitation. With this objective, a long-term research activity has been started out by the DAAT (Department of Environmental and Land Agronomy) of the University of Palermo in the experimental farm “Sparacia” (Cammarata – AG – Sicily), performing observations on Marigold plants managed with a minimum recourse to external technical inputs (nor pesticides neither chemical weeding, and a light (50 kg h…

Suitability of Illite Based Clays of Latvia for Chemical and Thermal Activation
2014
Materials has been synthesized in the temperature range from 600-800 0C from illite based clays of Latvia under activation of KOH and NaOH solutions (4-6 M). Compressive strength and apparent porosity were measured. The effect of the concentration of KOH and NaOH solutions on the material mechanical properties was investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy (IR). Compressive strength data of the materials showed that via such activation building materials with good quality can be obtained.
The effect of through-thickness compressive stress on mode II interlaminar fracture toughness
2017
Abstract The effect of through-thickness compressive stress on mode II interlaminar fracture toughness is investigated experimentally and replicated numerically. The modified Transverse Crack Tensile specimen recently proposed by the authors is used, together with an experimental device designed to apply a constant transverse compressive stress on the surface of the specimen. Experiments are conducted using IM7/8552 specimens for different compressive stresses, ranging from 0 to 100 MPa, covering all the practical applications commonly encountered in the aeronautical industry (e.g., tightened filled holes or bolted joints). It is shown that mode II interlaminar fracture toughness increases …
