Sea-surface temperature co-variability in the Southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans and its connections with the atmospheric circulation in the Souther…
2003
The relationship between sea-surface temperature (SST) inter-annual variability at the subtropical and midlatitudes of the southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans and its links with the atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere are investigated over the 1950–1999 period. Exploratory analysis using singular value decomposition and further investigations based on simple indices show that a large part of regional SST variability is common between the southwestern parts of both basins at subtropical and midlatitudes during the austral summer. Interestingly, these areas are also significantly associated with the far southwestern Pacific (Tasman Sea area). The patterns and time series of co-…
Detection and evaluation of an early divergence problem in northern Fennoscandian tree-ring data
2013
Although not yet fully understood, reduced sensitivity of tree growth to temperature at high northern latitudes during the last ˜ 40 years is often linked to concurrent anthropogenic changes of atmospheric composition and global warming. The idea that a temporal localization of the problem could improve its understanding initiated a search for erratic growth-patterns in earlier periods of high quality dendrochronological archives. An extensive network of maximum latewood density (MXD) measurements from northern Fennoscandia likely represents one of the most reliable regional summer-temperature reconstructions. The strong coherence between proxy and instrumental data is, however, interrupted…
Investigation by raman spectroscopy of the decomposition process of HKUST-1 upon exposure to air
2016
We report an experimental investigation by Raman spectroscopy of the decomposition process of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) HKUST-1 upon exposure to air moisture (T=300 K, 70% relative humidity). The data collected here are compared with the indications obtained from a model of the process of decomposition of this material proposed in literature. In agreement with that model, the reported Raman measurements indicate that for exposure times longer than 20 days relevant irreversible processes take place, which are related to the occurrence of the hydrolysis of Cu-O bonds. These processes induce small but detectable variations of the peak positions and intensities of the main Raman bands of th…
The CCSD(T) model with Cholesky decomposition of orbital energy denominators
2010
A new implementation of the coupled cluster singles and doubles with approximate triples correction method [CCSD(T)] using Cholesky decomposition of the orbital energy denominators is described. The new algorithm reduces the scaling of CCSD(T) from N-7 to N-6, where N is the number of orbitals. The Cholesky decomposition is carried out using simple analytical expressions that allow us to evaluate a priori the order in which the decomposition should be carried out and to obtain the relevant parts of the vectors whenever needed in the calculation. Several benchmarks have been carried out comparing the performance of the conventional and Cholesky CCSD(T) implementations. The Cholesky implement…
Boghossian's Reductio of Compatibilism
1998
The Theories of Helmholtz in the Work of Varèse
2011
In 1905 Varese discovered the French edition of Die Lehre von den Tonempfindungen als physiologische Grundlage fur die Theorie der Musik [On the Sensations of Tone as a Physiological Basis for the Theory of Music] of Hermann von Helmholtz (1863), the explicit intention of which was to bring together the common frontiers of science and music. This discovery was a revelation for the 22-year-old composer that went on to condition his whole philosophy of sound. The experiences of the German scientist, achieved with the aid of sirens, resonators or tuning forks, caught the imagination of the young composer. This article investigates the importance of the theories of Helmholtz for the Varesian ae…
Relationships between strain, microstructure and oxide growth at the nano- and microscale
2008
In the present article, the relationships between oxidation processes, surface strains and the microstructure of duplex stainless steels were investigated. Specimens were oxidized at 500 °C under secondary vacuum for 1 h to form a thin oxide film (thickness in the range of 20-50 nm). Such specimens were considered as the model system for developing novel methods of analysis in understanding the behavior of passive films. The interfacial strain field after oxidation was measured experimentally at the microscale using the point grid method. On the other hand, the chemical composition of the oxide film was determined at the submicroscopic scale by means of local scanning Auger spectroscopy (wi…
LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints and its applications.
2014
How to select and weigh features has always been a difficult problem in many image processing and pattern recognition applications. A data-dependent distance measure can address this problem to a certain extent, and therefore an accurate and efficient metric learning becomes necessary. In this paper, we propose a LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints (LDMLT) approach, which can learn Mahalanobis distance metric accurately and efficiently. First of all, we demonstrate the good properties of triplet constraints and apply it in LogDet divergence-based metric learning model. Then, to deal with high-dimensional data, we apply a compressed representation method to learn…
Disentangling the rhizosphere effect on nitrate reducers and denitrifiers: insight into the role of root exudates.
2008
International audience; To determine to which extent root-derived carbon contributes to the effects of plants on nitrate reducers and denitrifiers, four solutions containing different proportions of sugar, organic acids and amino acids mimicking maize root exudates were added daily to soil microcosms at a concentration of 150 μg C g−1 of soil. Water-amended soils were used as controls. After 1 month, the size and structure of the nitrate reducer and denitrifier communities were analysed using the narG and napA, and the nirK, nirS and nosZ genes as molecular markers respectively. Addition of artificial root exudates (ARE) did not strongly affect the structure or the density of nitrate reduce…
The influence of board diversity on financial performance : an empirical study of Asia-Pacific companies
2014
Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon – Universitetet i Agder 2014 This study investigates board diversity and its influence on financial performance. The main purpose of the study is to examine whether nationality and gender diversity influence financial performance as measured by Tobin’s Q. The study examines the biggest 50 Asia-Pacific companies according to Forbes Magazine. Data analysis is performed using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Two-Stage Least Square (2SLS) regressions analysis. The results show that gender diversity of board member has a positive influence on financial performance. However, nationality of board member contributes no significant influence on financial perf…
