CASSCF/CASPT2 analysis of the fragmentation of H2 on a Pd4 cluster

2010

Two reactive pathways are described for the dissociative adsorption of a hydrogen molecule on a Pd4 pyramidal cluster, by using DFT/B3LYP and CASSCF/CASPT2 computational methods. Because of the different spin multiplicities of the cluster in the initial and final states, the reaction proceeds through a spin multiplicity change, which occurs close to the transition states. The activation energy values are very similar when the DFT method is used, whereas the CASPT2 calculations predict that the concerted mechanism is disfavored.

Conduit dynamics and post explosion degassing on Stromboli: A combined UV camera and numerical modeling treatment

2016

Recent gas flux measurements have shown that Strombolian explosions are often followed by periods of elevated flux, or “gas codas,” with durations of order a minute. Here we present UV camera data from 200 events recorded at Stromboli volcano to constrain the nature of these codas for the first time, providing estimates for combined explosion plus coda SO2 masses of ≈18–225 kg. Numerical simulations of gas slug ascent show that substantial proportions of the initial gas mass can be distributed into a train of “daughter bubbles” released from the base of the slug, which we suggest, generate the codas, on bursting at the surface. This process could also cause transitioning of slugs into cap b…

The FE-Meshless multiscale approach applied to masonry structures

2015

Heterogeneous structures have an overall response that is strongly dependent on the inelastic events developing at the local level. In these structures, the most relevant kinematical and mechanical phenomena take place at a scale which is small if compared to the dimensions of the entire structure. In literature, a mesoscopic and a macroscopic scales of interest are distinguished, directly linked to as many theoretical approaches. The mesoscopic approach [1] considers materials and their interfaces individually, but many difficulties arise in the mesh creation and a fine discretization of the structure is needed, which leads to prohibitive computational costs. The macroscopic approach consi…

A Qualitative and Quantitative Study on Ancient Latin Texts Concerning the Concept of aether : Some Methodological Considerations

2022

My study focuses on the semantic analysis of an ambiguous Latin word, aether, which may roughly be translated as ‘celestial substance’. The study is carried out by utilising both qualitative and quantitative methods on a digital text corpus containing Latin literature dating from ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. In this paper, the compilation process and the contents of the corpus are described. Beside qualitative research (close reading), various computational methods are implemented on the corpus (distant reading). Of the latter, cosine similarity and correspondence analysis are discussed in this paper. I will explicate one way of combining qualitative and quantitative methods by assigning numerica…

CHANGING PERSPECTIVE ON PERCEPTION PHYSIOLOGY: CAN YOU REALLY SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING?

2018

Perception is a complex, neural mechanism that requires organization and interpretation of input meaning and it has been a key topic in medicine, neuroscience and philosophy for centuries. Gestalt psychology proposed that the underlying mechanism is a constructive process that depends on both input of stimuli and the sensory-motor state of the agent. The Bayesian Brain hypothesis reframed it as probabilistic inference of previous beliefs, which are revised to accommodate new information. The Predictive Coding Theory proposes that this process is implemented through a top-down cascade of cortical predictions of lower level input and the concurrent propagation of a bottom-up prediction error …

Multi-objective optimization for computation offloading in mobile-edge computing

2017

Mobile-edge cloud computing is a new cloud platform to provide pervasive and agile computation augmenting services for mobile devices (MDs) at anytime and anywhere by endowing ubiquitous radio access networks with computing capabilities. Although offloading computations to the cloud can reduce energy consumption at the MDs, it may also incur a larger execution delay. Usually the MDs have to pay cloud resource they used. In this paper, we utilize queuing theory to bring a thorough study on the energy consumption, execution delay and price cost of offloading process in a mobile-edge cloud system. Specifically, both wireless transmission and computing capabilities are explicitly and jointly co…

Solvated copper(I) hexafluorosilicate π-complexes based on [Cu2(amtd)2]2+ (amtd = 2-allylamino-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole) dimer

2016

[Cu2(amdt)2]SiF6·C6H6 and [Cu2(amdt)2(H2O)2]SiF6·CH3CN·2H2O (amdt = 2-allylamino-5- methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole) were obtained by alternating-current electrochemical synthesis, starting from water–acetonitrile–benzene mixtures containing 2-allylamino-5-methyl-1,3,4- thiadiazole and CuSiF6·4H2O. The electrochemical reduction of the saturated copper hexafluorosilicate water solution beneath the neatly poured layer of acetonitrile-benzene amdt solution resulted in the formation of crystalline [Cu2(amdt)2]SiF6·C6H6. The initial stirring of the same mixture before subjecting it to the electrochemical reduction resulted in the formation of [Cu2(amdt)2(H2O)2]SiF6·CH3CN·2H2O. A sluggish hydrolysis of …

Computing temporal sequences associated with dynamic patterns on the C. elegans connectome

2021

AbstractUnderstanding how the structural connectivity of a network constrains the dynamics it is able to support is a very active and open area of research. We simulated the plausible dynamics resulting from the known C. elegans connectome using a recent model and theoretical analysis that computes the dynamics of neurobiological networks by focusing on how local interactions among connected neurons give rise to the global dynamics in an emergent way, independent of the biophysical or molecular details of the cells themselves. We studied the dynamics which resulted from stimulating a chemosensory neuron (ASEL) in a known feeding circuit, both in isolation and embedded in the full connectome…
