Computational modeling of molecularly imprinted polymers as a green approach to the development of novel analytical sorbents

2018

Abstract The development of novel molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) sorbents for specific chemical compounds require a lot of tedious and time-consuming laboratory work. Significant quantities of solvents and reagents are consumed in the course of the verification of appropriate configurations of polymerization reagents. Implementation of molecular modeling in the MIP sorbent development process appears to provide a solution to this problem. Appropriate simulations and computations facilitate the determination of the nature of interaction between the reagents and thus the selection of the best configuration of chemicals for the preparation of the sorbent. The article presents literature …

Incentive Mechanism for Edge Computing-Based Blockchain: A Sequential Game Approach

2022

The development of the blockchain framework is able to provide feasible solutions for a wide range of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. While the IIoT devices are usually resource-limited, how to make sure the acquisition of computational resources and participation of the devices will be the driving force to realize blockchain. In this work, an edge computing-based blockchain framework is considered, where multiple edge service providers (ESPs) can provide computational resources to the IIoT devices. We focus on investigating the trading between the devices and ESPs, where ESPs are the sellers and devices are the buyers. A sequential game is formulated and by exploring the…

LightSleepNet: A Lightweight Deep Model for Rapid Sleep Stage Classification with Spectrograms.

2021

Deep learning has achieved unprecedented success in sleep stage classification tasks, which starts to pave the way for potential real-world applications. However, due to its enormous size, deployment of deep neural networks is hindered by high cost at various aspects, such as computation power, storage, network bandwidth, power consumption, and hardware complexity. For further practical applications (e.g., wearable sleep monitoring devices), there is a need for simple and compact models. In this paper, we propose a lightweight model, namely LightSleepNet, for rapid sleep stage classification based on spectrograms. Our model is assembled by a much fewer number of model parameters compared to…

A dynamic adjustment model of saccade lengths in reading for word-spaced orthographies : evidence from simulations and invisible boundary experiments

2021

Contemporary models of eye movement control in reading assume a discrete target word selection process preceding saccade length computation, while the selection itself is assumed to be driven by word identification processes. However, a potentially more parsimonious, dynamic adjustment view allows both next word length and its content (e.g. orthographic) to modulate saccade length in a continuous manner. Based on a recently proposed center-based saccade length account (a new regression model of forward saccade length is introduced and validated in a simulation study. Further, additional simulations and gaze-contingent invisible boundary experiments were used to study the cognitive mechanism…

Importance of Enharmonic Tone Spelling in Computational Analysis of Tonal Structure

2009

This paper will discuss various instances of enharmonic spellings of chords. Selected characteristic enharmonic chords in compositions of the tonal period will be presented. The paper's main purpose is to show: (1) the importance of the enharmonic spelling of chords/tones in the automated analysis of tonal music, (2) how the analysis of the relative strength of a given key range is modified when we take into account its enharmonic spellings, (3) the problem of enharmonic spelling in characteristic chords (For example in the Tristan chord), (4) the interdependence between the enharmonic spelling in a given piece of music and the whole tonal structure (relationship between given key ranges).

Role of Weak Hydrogen Bonds and Halogen Bonds in 5-Halo-1,3-dimethyluracils and Their Cocrystals—A Combined Experimental and Computational Study

2016

Seven single crystals containing either N,N-dimethyluracil (DMHU) or one of its 5-halogenated derivatives (DMXU; X = F, Cl, Br, I) were prepared using N,N-dimethylformamide as the crystallization solvent. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and quantum chemical calculations carried out at the spin component scaled local MP2 level of theory were then used to study the intramolecular halogen and nonconventional hydrogen bonds present in the structures. The results were compared to and contrasted with the previously reported data for uracil and its halogenated derivatives. In particular, the intermolecular interactions in DMIU were compared to the halogen and hydrogen bonds in 5-iodouracil that, …

Surrogate assisted interactive multiobjective optimization in energy system design of buildings

2022

In this paper, we develop a novel evolutionary interactive method called interactive K-RVEA, which is suitable for computationally expensive problems. We use surrogate models to replace the original expensive objective functions to reduce the computation time. Typically, in interactive methods, a decision maker provides some preferences iteratively and the optimization algorithm narrows the search according to those preferences. However, working with surrogate model swill introduce some inaccuracy to the preferences, and therefore, it would be desirable that the decision maker can work with the solutions that are evaluated with the original objective functions. Therefore, we propose a novel…

Probabilistic Logic under Coherence: Complexity and Algorithms

2005

In previous work [V. Biazzo, A. Gilio, T. Lukasiewicz and G. Sanfilippo, Probabilistic logic under coherence, model-theoretic probabilistic logic, and default reasoning in System P, Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 12(2) (2002) 189---213.], we have explored the relationship between probabilistic reasoning under coherence and model-theoretic probabilistic reasoning. In particular, we have shown that the notions of g-coherence and of g-coherent entailment in probabilistic reasoning under coherence can be expressed by combining notions in model-theoretic probabilistic reasoning with concepts from default reasoning. In this paper, we continue this line of research. Based on the above sem…

An Optimized Architecture for CGA Operations and Its Application to a Simulated Robotic Arm

2022

Conformal geometric algebra (CGA) is a new geometric computation tool that is attracting growing attention in many research fields, such as computer graphics, robotics, and computer vision. Regarding the robotic applications, new approaches based on CGA have been proposed to efficiently solve problems as the inverse kinematics and grasping of a robotic arm. The hardware acceleration of CGA operations is required to meet real-time performance requirements in embedded robotic platforms. In this paper, we present a novel embedded coprocessor for accelerating CGA operations in robotic tasks. Two robotic algorithms, namely, inverse kinematics and grasping of a human-arm-like kinematics chain, ar…
