An analysis of the bias of variation operators of estimation of distribution programming

Estimation of distribution programming (EDP) replaces standard GP variation operators with sampling from a learned probability model. To ensure a minimum amount of variation in a population, EDP adds random noise to the probabilities of random variables. This paper studies the bias of EDP's variation operator by performing random walks. The results indicate that the complexity of the EDP model is high since the model is overfitting the parent solutions when no additional noise is being used. Adding only a low amount of noise leads to a strong bias towards small trees. The bias gets stronger with an increased amount of noise. The visualization system of large-scale crowd simulations should scale up with both the number of visuals views of the virtual world and the number of agents displayed in each visual. Otherwise, we could have large scale crowd simulations where only a small percentage of the population is displayed. A Population-Based Approach to the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem

We present a population-based approach to the RCPSP. The procedure has two phases. The first phase handles the initial construction of a population of schedules and these are then evolved until high quality solutions are obtained. The evolution of the population is driven by the alternative application of an efficient improving procedure for locally improving the use of resources, and a mechanism for combining schedules that blends scatter search and path relinking characteristics. The objective of the second phase is to explore in depth those vicinities near the high quality schedules. In Evolutionary Computing, Swarm Intelligence, and more generally, populationbased algorithms diversity plays a crucial role in the success of the optimization. Diversity is a property of a group of individuals which indicates how much these individuals are alike. Clearly, a group composed of individuals similar to each other is said to have a low diversity whilst a group of individuals dissimilar to each other is said to have a high diversity. Theoretical study of selective H3 receptor antagonists of histamine

Abstract The conformations and charge distributions of three selective H3 receptor antagonists of histamine were determined using the MNDO approach. The results suggest that the conformational flexibilities of betahistine, N α-(2-phenylacetyl)histamine and thioperamide are different; however, the low-energy conformations of these compounds show closely related spatial orderings. The MNDO calculations predict a significant population of the N1H form in the imidazole systems of N α-(2-phenylacetyl)histamine and thioperamide. First-principles calculations on surface hydroxyl impurities in BaF2

Abstract OH − impurities located near the (1 1 1) BaF 2 surface have been studied by using density functional theory (DFT) with hybrid exchange potentials, namely DFT-B3PW. Twenty surface OH − configurations were studied, and the hydroxyls located on the first surface layer are the energetically most favorable configurations. For the (1 1 1) BaF 2 surface atomic layers, the surface hydroxyls lead to a remarkable XY -translation and a dilating effect in the Z -direction, overcoming the surface shrinking effect in the perfect slab. On the role of the triplet state in the cis/trans isomerization of rhodopsin: A CASPT2//CASSCF study of a model chromophore

The possibility of population of the lowest-lying triplet state (T1) in the early events of the photochemical isomerization process of a model chromophore of Rhodopsin (Rh) has been analyzed using multireference perturbation theory (CASPT2//CASSCF) methods. It is shown that the characteristics of the isomerization process namely small S1−T1 gap, presence of hydrogen out of plane active vibrational modes, and existence of a dense manifold of vibrational states, render possible the fulfilment of the conditions needed for the population of T1.
