Learning Environment in Light of Positional, Institutional, and Cultural Interpretations: An Empirically-Based Conceptual Analysis

2016

This study explores the possibility that the concept of learning environment (LE) is understood and interpreted differently by various users, depending on their relative positions in the educational system, institutional affiliation, and cultural heritage. The study employs a qualitative approach and is based on 14 semistructured separate interviews with professionals in the field of education. The participants in the study have been chosen from 3 different levels in the educational system (assistants, kindergarten and school teachers, and principals/county government representatives) and across different institutions (kindergartens and schools). The data reveal a clear pattern in which the…

Conceptualizing and measuring loyalty: Towards a conceptual model of tourist loyalty antecedents

2011

Research on loyalty in tourism is becoming an area particularly relevant in the design of strategies for tourism companies oriented towards creating and continuing customer relationships. In this context, the present paper aims at studying loyalty formation in its two approaches (attitudinal and behavioral) from a dual purpose. First, we conduct a literature review on loyalty conceptualization in the context of tourism and focus on the main background — satisfaction, service quality, value and customer commitment — and moderator variables — consumer variety seeking and demographic characteristics. Then a model about direct and indirect relationships between these variables is presented. Ne…

XML-based Knowledge Discovery for Linguistic Atlas of Sicily (ALS) Project

2009

The identification of new useful patterns in data is a core process for intelligent systems. Information overflow is directly related to this problem. In this work we propose a knowledge discovery methodology to retrieve useful and novel information from raw data stored in a DBMS. We used ALSDB, a database that has been built suitably to access structured information obtained from the questionnaires produced in the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily (ALS) project. The ALS project is a decennal joint effort led by researchers at the Dipartimento di Scienze Filologiche e Linguistiche of the University of Palermo that has the purpose to track and study the geo-linguistic and lexicographic processes ab…

The Challenges and Opportunities of Human Technology

2005

Technology is for human use. It is designed to satisfy some human needs and to aid people in reaching their goals. Technology, therefore, is a part of human activities and, for this reason alone, it should always be considered within the context of human life, the human experience. This basic credo forms the foundation for the concept of human technology. Instead of seeing technology as a construction following the laws of nature, the challenge of human technology is to explore and understand how humanist and social research can contribute to the conceptualization and implementation of technology.

Social network brand visibility (SNBV) : Conceptualization and empirical evidence

2018

Social media has become a new way of life that allows for real-time interaction among businesses (B2B) and consumers (P2P/C2C) as well as between business firms and consumers (B2C). Customers are increasingly accessing and using social networking sites (SNS), making it imperative for businesses and organizations to have a presence on these platforms to enhance visibility. The main purpose of this chapter is to provoke an agenda on the study of social network brand visibility (SNBV). We developed and proposed a definition of SNBV and report findings from a preliminary study. We further discuss implications for theory, research, and practice as well as the limitations and options for future r…

Geographies of markets: Materials, morals and monsters in motion

2010

Approaching processes of capitalist market exchange from a cultural economic perspective, we identify three strands of research that are all part of a widespread ‘pragmatic turn’ in the study of economic activities: (1) the conceptualization of markets as heterogeneous arrangements of people, things and sociotechnical devices; (2) the insight that multiple frames of reference are mobilized in everyday market activities in addition to instrumental rationality; and (3) approaches that combine an interest in the performance of diversity and difference in concrete market contexts with an attention to mobility in network capitalism.

Integrated initial and continuing training as a way of developing the professional agency of teachers and student teachers

2020

In this paper, we discuss training aimed at supporting the professional agency of teachers and student teachers. Drawing on socio-cultural and post-structural theories, we conceptualize professional agency as achieved by participation in professional practices. We employ our conceptualization in an analysis of a Finnish pilot training that combined initial and continuous training for preschool and primary school teachers. We argue that the practices of reflection and collective enquiry inherent in the model offer a fruitful starting point for further efforts to understand how to support the development of the professional agency of teachers and student teachers simultaneously. peerReviewed

Steering Institutionalization through Institutional Work: The Case of an eProcurement System in Indonesian Local Government

2014

Corruption is arguably one of the main hindrances to development. In their effort to combat corruption, governments in developing countries turn to information technology to enhance transparency in decision making. However, implementation of an information system in this context is not straightforward. Premised upon institutional theory, this interpretive case study traces the role of institutional actors in the institutionalization of an eProcurement system in Indonesian local government. It draws on different streams of research on institutional work to develop an interpretive lens to understand what institutional actors do to steer the institutionalization process. It identifies a set of…

Rough Sets and Vague Sets

2007

The subject-matter of the consideration touches the problem of vagueness. The notion of the rough set, originated by Zdzislaw Pawlak, was constructed under the influence of vague information and methods of shaping systems of notions leading to conceptualization and representation of vague knowledge, so also systems of their scopes as some vague sets. This paper outlines some direction of searching for a solution to this problem. In the paper, in connection to the notion of the rough set, the notion of a vague set is introduced. Some operations on these sets and their properties are discussed. The considerations intend to take into account a classical approach to reasoning, based on vague pr…
