Pore structure and function of synthetic nanopores with fixed charges: tip shape and rectification properties

We present a complete theoretical study of the relationship between the structure (tip shape and dimensions) and function (selectivity and rectification) of asymmetric nanopores on the basis of previous experimental studies. The theoretical model uses a continuum approach based on the Nernst-Planck equations. According to our results, the nanopore transport properties, such as current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, conductance, rectification ratio, and selectivity, are dictated mainly by the shape of the pore tip (we have distinguished bullet-like, conical, trumpet-like, and hybrid shapes) and the concentration of pore surface charges. Spectral Measurement of Photon Emission from Individual Gold Nanoparticles Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

The light emission spectra of individual Au nanoparticles induced by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) have been investigated. Two-dimensional ensembles of tunnel-coupled Au particles were prepared by thermal evaporation onto a native oxide silicon wafer in ultrahigh vacuum (10 – 9 mbar). Our STM measurements show a single peak at photon energy 1.6 eV in the tunneling mode and two peaks at 2.2 eV (connected with the Mie plasmon) and 1.45 eV (a new peak which was not discussed in literature before) in the field emission mode.

Fluoride-Induced Negative Differential Resistance in Nanopores: Experimental and Theoretical Characterization

We describe experimentally and theoretically the fluoride-induced negative differential resistance (NDR) phenomena observed in conical nanopores operating in aqueous electrolyte solutions. The threshold voltage switching occurs around 1 V and leads to sharp current drops in the nA range with a peak-to-valley ratio close to 10. The experimental characterization of the NDR effect with single pore and multipore samples concern different pore radii, charge concentrations, scan rates, salt concentrations, solvents, and cations. Electronic transport in intermediate sized carbon nanotubes

We have studied systematically basic transport properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in a relatively unexplored diameter range, corresponding to tubes just slightly larger than single- or double-walled tubes to tubes up to 17 nm in diameter. We find in all the smaller tubes a gap in the transport data which increases with decreasing tube diameter. Within the gap region of several tubes, negative differential resistance was observed at small or moderate biases and at bias values that scaled inversely with the tube diameter. For this latter type of behavior of the conductance, we tentatively propose interlayer resonant tunneling as the cause.

Plant Response to Saline-Water Irrigation in a Sicilian Vineyard

This chapter presents results of a 3-year field investigation in a vineyard located in Sicily (Mazara del Vallo, Trapani) within the framework of the Project “Evolution of cropping systems as affected by climate change” (CLIMESCO). Soil-plant responses to two saline irrigation waters were determined by measuring soil hydrological characteristics, soil salinity, crop transpiration and stomatal conductance in field plots of a Sicilian vineyard. Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator Interacts with Multiple Immunoglobulin Domains of Filamin A

Mutations of the chloride channel cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) that impair its apical localization and function cause cystic fibrosis. A previous report has shown that filamin A (FLNa), an actin-cross-linking and -scaffolding protein, interacts directly with the cytoplasmic N terminus of CFTR and that this interaction is necessary for stability and confinement of the channel to apical membranes. Here, we report that the CFTR N terminus has sequence similarity to known FLNa-binding partner-binding sites. <title>Scanning probe microscopy of nanocrystalline iridium oxide thin films</title>

Structural investigations of nanocrystalline iridium oxide thin films, prepared by dc magnetron sputtering technique were performed by scanning probe microscopy (SPM). SPM studies, using both atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), indicate that the thin films are composed of grains with a size of about 20-50 nm. Fine crystallinity and small RMS microroughness of the films, being well below 2 nm, make iridium oxide thin films promising candidates for nanolithographic applications. In Italy, grapevines are extensively cultivated, with Sicily representing one of the most significant wine regions. The high number of autochthonous grapevine varieties represents an important source of genetic diversity, and the many Sicilian varieties have anatomical and physiological traits that allow them to resist to different levels of drought stress.
