Wall patterns influence the perception of interior space

The texture of an object’s surface influences its perceived spatial extent. For example, Hermann von Helmholtz reported that a square patch with black and white stripes appears elongated perpendicular to the stripes’ orientation. This time-honoured finding stands in contrast with more recent recommendations by interior-design experts who suggest that stripe wall patterns make rooms appear elongated in the direction parallel to the stripes’ orientation. Muscle fiber conduction velocity (CV) may be affected by the level of voluntary activation and by the diameter of the fiber. Both the frequency component of the electromyography (EMG) power spectrum, such the as median frequency (MF) or mean power frequency, and the duration of muscle compound action potential to single supramaximal electrical impulse (maximal M-wave) may be related to CV. Effects of ageing on peroxidase activity and localization in radish (Raphanus sativus L.) seeds.

Peroxidase activity was assayed in crude extracts of integument, cotyledons and embryo axis of radish seeds, deteriorated under accelerated ageing conditions. Over five days of ageing, in which germination decreased from 100 to 52%, the enzyme activity in integument was higher than that in other seed parts, increasing in the first days of ageing and then decreasing sharply in extremely aged seeds. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis showed four peroxidase isoenzymes with MM of 98, 52.5, 32.8 and 29.5 kDa in the embryo axis of unaged seeds, and only the 32.8 and 29.5 kDa MM isoforms in the integument and cotyledons. Ohmic treatment of fresh foods: Effect on textural properties

The aim of this work was to verify the effects of ohmic heating (OH) treatment on texture of fresh solid food (without pre-treatment in brine solutions), subjected to constant electrical field gradient (1100 V/m; 2200 V/m; 3300 V/m). Samples of fresh potatoes, carrots and apples cut into cylinders (d = 30 mm, h = 9.0 mm) underwent OH for 60, 120, 180 and 240 seconds. Texture measurements were performed in a universal testing machine Instron 4301, with a 100 N load cell, using a single-cycle compression test. The raw untreated sample was used as control. Magnetic and structural study of (Fe1−Co )62 Nb8B30 bulk amorphous alloys

Abstract The electric and magnetic properties of rapidly quenched (Fe 1− x Co x ) 62 Nb 8 B 30 bulk metallic glasses were studied with x =0, 0.33 and 0.50. The Curie temperature in the amorphous state was found to be about 245 °C for the Co-free alloy, 290 °C for x =0.33 and 201 °C for x =0.50, while the crystallization temperature is varying within 15° only around 600 °C. The change in T C correlates with the change in Mossbauer parameters. An interesting flattening effect of annealing on the hysteresis loop was observed which increases with the Co content. The resistivity could not be improved above 152 μΩ cm, which limits the high frequency applications of these alloys.

Electrical resistivity of amorphous simple metals at moderately low temperatures

Abstract The dependence of electrical resistivity ρ ( T ) on temperature T in a region of moderate temperatures is considered for amorphous simple metals. It is shown within the Faber–Ziman theory that the ratio [ ρ ( T )− ρ (0)]/ T 2 has a maximum in the temperature region 10 K⩽ T ⩽100 K The theory is illustrated by numerical calculations performed for hard-sphere models of amorphous Mg and Zn.

Correlated barrier hopping in NiO films

The ac conduction in NiO films has been investigated in the frequency range 10 Hz < v < 10^9 Hz and at temperatures between 10 and 300 K. The frequency and the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity can be consistently explained within a model developed for the mechanism of charge transfer in amorphous semiconductors which proposes that charge carriers hop over potential barriers between defect sites, the height of the barriers being correlated with the intersite separation.

Influence of the electro-optical properties of an a-Si:H single layer on the performances of a pin solar cell

We analyze the results of an extensive characterization study involving electrical and optical measurements carried out on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (α-Si:H) thin film materials fabricated under a wide range of deposition conditions. By adjusting the synthesis parameters, we evidenced how conductivity, activation energy, electrical transport and optical absorption of an α-Si:H layer can be modified and optimized. We analyzed the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor of the dark conductivity by varying the dopant-to-silane gas flow ratio. Electronic tongues were developed some ten years ago. These systems consist of an array of nonspecific sensors and a signal processing unit. The sensor signals are processed by pattern recognition methods which makes possible the extraction of specific properties from the sample. Depending on the calibration, attributes such as quality or taste can be determined.
