Complete, exact, and efficient computations with cubic curves

2004

The Bentley-Ottmann sweep-line method can be used to compute thearrangement of planar curves provided a number of geometricprimitives operating on the curves are available. We discuss themathematics of the primitives for planar algebraic curves of degreethree or less and derive efficient realizations. As a result, weobtain a complete, exact, and efficient algorithm for computingarrangements of cubic curves. Conics and cubic splines are specialcases of cubic curves. The algorithm is complete in that it handles all possibledegeneracies including singularities. It is exact in that itprovides the mathematically correct result. It is efficient in thatit can handle hundreds of curves with a quart…

Biodiversity within the subfamily Alyssinae (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) in the Natural Park Peñas de Aya (Spain)

2011

Biodiversity within the subfamily Alyssinae (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) in the Natural Park Peñas de Aya (Spain). The study of parasitoid Hymenoptera is of significance for the assessment of diversity in a given area because of their role in the regulation of insects populations. The present work analyses diversity within Alysiinae (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) in the Forested Estate of Artikutza, located in the Natural Park Peñas de Aya, western Pyrenees, Spain. Collection of specimens was spread over two years and was carried out in two different habitats: mixed forest and beech forest. A total of 2,270 specimens, belonging to 22 separate genera, were captured. Subsequently, alpha, beta and gam…

Will the invasive western conifer seed bug Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Coreidae) seize all of Europe?

2008

In our day, thanks to high-speed transport systems, people are moving living species (intentionally or not) across ecosystems and countless borders. As we know, most introduced species usually do not survive, because they find neither a tolerable environment nor an available ecological niche. Sometimes, successful establishment may also require multiple introductions (Balcom 2004).

Intraspecific Variation of Host Plant and Locality Influence the Lepidopteran-Parasitoid System of Brassica oleracea Crops

2013

ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to investigate the attractiveness to herbivores and parasitoids of two cultivars of Brassica oleracea L., namely, B. oleracea variety acephala (kale) and B. oleracea variety capitata (cabbage), that exhibit differences of morphological and biochemical traits. To this end, field samplings were replicated at seven localities in Galicia (northwestern Spain). Three specialist and three generalist lepidopteran species were sampled. In total, 7,050 parasitoids were obtained, belonging to 18 genera and 22 species. The results showed that 1) parasitism rate and parasitoid species richness changed with locality and was higher in cabbage, although this crop had lower…

Two- and three-state conical intersections in the electron capture dissociation of disulfides: The importance of multireference calculations

2011

The SS bond cleavage produced upon electron attachment to disulfides was generally assumed to be an adiabatic process because the added electron occupies the σ*(SS) antibonding orbital. This is clearly the case in the parent HSSH compound, but not necessarily in XSSX′ derivatives, where the substituents X and X′ are different. Through the use of MS-CASPT2 calculations, we have shown that the dissociation of the SS two-center-three-electron bond in these asymmetric XSSX′ compounds requires the interaction of at least two states, in order to localize the extra electron in one of the fragments upon dissociation. This is actually the case for the CH3SSNH2 derivative, where the most favorable di…

Nonlinear analysis of cylindrical and conical hysteretic whirl motions in rotor-dynamics

2014

Abstract The internal friction of a rotor–shaft-support system is mainly due to the shaft structural hysteresis and to some possible shrink-fit release of the assembly. The experimentation points out the destabilizing effect of the internal friction in the over-critical rotor running. Nevertheless, this detrimental influence may be efficiently counterbalanced by other external dissipative sources located in the supports or by a proper anisotropic configuration of the support stiffness. The present analysis considers a rotor–shaft system which is symmetric with respect to the mid-span and is constrained by viscous-flexible supports with different stiffness on two orthogonal planes. The cylin…

Experimental characterisation of the CIRA plasma wind tunnel SCIROCCO test section

2008

Abstract During the Validation Phase of the CIRA-PWT SCIROCCO Facility located at Capua (Italy), a test campaign has been carried out to verify the performances of the facility with the use of the two conical nozzle configurations “D” and “F” with exit diameters are, respectively of, 1150 and 1950 mm. For the first time the data results of the tests have been used to characterize the plasma flow in the test section of the facility. In particular, analytical relationships between the main thermo-fluid-dynamic parameters in the test section and the reservoir conditions of the facility have been found, and compared to the CFD prediction developed during the Design Phase of the facility. Very i…

Zirconia implant abutments: A review

2009

Objectives: An increasing aesthetic demand within developed populations conducted to the fabrication of metalfree restorations and to a wide use of ceramic materials, due to its excellent characteristics of biocompatibility and aesthetics. With the incessant increase of commercial labels involved in this technological advance, a review is imposed on ceramic abutments, specifically on zirconia. We made a search of articles of peer-reviewed Journals in PubMed/ Medline, crossing the terms ?Dental Abutments?, ?Dental Porcelain? and ?Zirconia?. The review was divided by subtopics: zirconia physical and mechanical properties, precision fit in the implant-abutment interface, zirconia abutments str…

Glossing wind names in Low German in Salisbury? A newly discovered text in London, British Library, Cotton Vitellius A.xii

2018

It's an essay investigating a text on the names of the winds in ms London, British Library, Cotton Vitellius A.xii (s. xi), where both Latin and vernacular names are given. The text may ultimately derive from Einhard's Life of Charlemagne (ch. 29), but it appears as a self-contained text in the form of a Class Glossary. Although inserted in a manuscript copied in England at Salisbury, the vernacular words of the text are not in Old English. The essay makes a case for a possible connection with Flanders, with the text being one of the very rare surviving specimen of the Old Low Franconian language.
