Particle size and morphology control of the negative thermal expansion material cubic zirconium tungstate

2009

Cubic ZrW2O8 is a negative thermal expansion (NTE) material that is of interest as filler in controlled thermal expansion composites. It is easily accessible from a hydrated precursor, ZrW2O7(OH)2·2H2O, which can be obtained by hydrothermal synthesis. Different reaction conditions were investigated to gain control over the morphology, and to minimize the particle size. Optimized procedures resulted in rod-shaped particles with widths of 10–30 nm and lengths of 200–500 nm, which showed little agglomeration. The particle size and morphology of the precursor are preserved during conversion to the NTE phase at 600–650 °C.

Ceramic/metal nanocomposites by lyophilization: Spark plasma sintering and hardness

2014

The present study is focused on the procedure of spray-drying and lyophilization techniques for the preparation of ceramic/metal nanocomposites. The results of the study at all stages are compared with those corresponding to powders conventionally dried by heating in furnace. Starting from aqueous solutions of metal salts and ceramic powders, the procedure follows with spray-drying, lyophilization, calcination of the resulting powders and subsequent Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). X-ray diffraction analysis of the powders at different stages of the processing routes was used for phase indexing; further characterization was performed by Transmission Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-…

Zirconia nanocrystals as submicron level biological label

2012

Inorganic nanocrystals are of increasing interest for their usage in biology and pharmacology research. Our interest was to justify ZrO2 nanocrystal usage as submicron level biological label in baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisia culture. For the first time (to our knowledge) images with sub micro up-conversion luminescent particles in biologic media were made. A set of undoped as well as Er and Yb doped ZrO2 samples at different concentrations were prepared by sol-gel method. The up-conversion luminescence for free standing and for nanocrystals with baker's yeast cells was studied and the differences in up-conversion luminescence spectra were analyzed. In vivo toxic effects of ZrO2 nanoc…

Cell and tissue response to nanotextured Ti6Al4V and Zr implants using high-speed femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures

2019

In this paper, the effect of femtosecond laser nanotexturing of surfaces of Ti6Al4V and Zr implants on their biological compatibility is presented and discussed. Highly regular and homogeneous nanostructures with sub-micrometer period were imprinted on implant surfaces. Surfaces were morphologically and chemically investigated by SEM and XPS. HDFa cell lines were used for toxicity and cell viability tests, and subcutaneous implantation was applied to characterize tissue response. HDFa proliferation and in vivo experiments evidenced the strong influence of the surface topography compared to the effect of the surface elemental composition (metal or alloy). The effect of protein adsorption fro…

Conical Fiber Probe for Mechanical Stabilization of Microbubbles in Liquids

2020

We demonstrate that a cone pierced in a fiber tip can stabilize microbubles photothermally generated in liquids. Bubbles can stand and monitor pressure shocks over 3.3 bar with a sensitivity below 7 mbar.

Europium doped zirconia luminescence

2010

Abstract The luminescence properties and crystalline structure of ZrO2:Eu nanocrystals doped with different concentrations of Eu were studied. Luminescence from the Eu2+ state was not observed even if the electrons and holes were created up to ∼1019 cm−3; thus it was suggested the Eu3+ was not an efficient trap for electrons possibly due to Eu3+ negative charge relative to the crystalline lattice. The mutual interaction between Eu3+ ions was not strong up to 5 at.% concentration. The stabilization of ZrO2 tetragonal as well as cubic structure by Eu3+ is possible.

PBS Nanodots for Ultraviolet Radiation Nanosensor

2011

PbS nanodots embedded in a zirconium oxide nanofilm were explored as possible ultraviolet (UV) sensors for nanodosimetry purposes. The nanodots were excited by ultraviolet photons to get emission of weak electrons. The emitted charge correlated to UV exposure indicates that PbS nanodots have potential for use as UV sensors for nanodosimetry.

In-situ nano-silica deposition and air-abrasion with Bioglass 45S5 or aluminium oxide: Effects on methacrylate bonding to yttria-tetragonal zirconia …

2015

This study aimed at assessing the bonding performance after water storage (24 h/6-month) of a methacrylate-based cement applied onto Yttria-Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal(Y-TZP) pre-treated using an innovative in-situ silica nanoparticle deposition method and/or air-abrasion with Bioglass 45S5 (BAG) or aluminium oxide (AlO). Pre-sintered blocks of Y-TZP were coated with nano-silica using an experimental in-situ deposition method or used as received (control/silica-free). Air-abrasion was performed with AlO or BAG particles both on silica-coated and control Y-TZP specimens. All the specimens were then analysed using SEM– EDX. Further specimens were treated as described above, bonded using a…

Experimental and theoretical investigations of lignin-urea-formaldehyde wood adhesive: Density functional theory analysis

2021

Abstract In view of its chemical structure, lignin has recently become an interesting candidate for various applications. This work serves to optimize the isolation process of lignin from sugar industry by-product (bagasse can, molasses beet) applying alkali treatment. For this purpose, the effect of alkali and sulfuric acid concentrations have been studied ranging from 10% (w/v) to 20% (w/v) and 1.5 M–3 M, respectively. Moreover, the isolated lignins were characterized by different complementary analysis such as FT-IR and TGA/DTG. The aim behind this work is to reduce formaldehyde emissions and improving mechanical as well as physical properties of wood adhesive. Lignin was added with diff…
