Light transmittance of zirconia as a function of thickness and microhardness of resin cements under different thicknesses of zirconia

2012

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare microhardness of resin cements under different thicknesses of zirconia and the light transmittance of zirconia as a function of thickness. Study design: A total of 126 disc-shaped specimens (2 mm in height and 5 mm in diameter) were prepared from dual-cured resin cements (RelyX Unicem, Panavia F and Clearfil SA cement). Photoactivation was performed by using quartz tungsten halogen and light emitting diode light curing units under different thicknesses of zirconia. Then the specimens (n=7/per group) were stored in dry conditions in total dark at 37°C for 24 h. The Vicker's hardness test was performed on the resin cement layer with a micr…

Depth-dose measurement corrections for the surface electronic brachytherapy beams of an Esteya® unit: a Monte Carlo study

2020

Abstract Three different correction factors for measurements with the parallel-plate ionization chamber PTW T34013 on the Esteya electronic brachytherapy unit have been investigated. This chamber type is recommended by AAPM TG-253 for depth-dose measurements in the 69.5 kV x-ray beam generated by the Esteya unit. Monte Carlo simulations using the PENELOPE-2018 system were performed to determine the absorbed dose deposited in water and in the chamber sensitive volume at different depths with a Type A uncertainty smaller than 0.1%. Chamber-to-chamber differences have been explored performing measurements using three different chambers. The range of conical applicators available, from 10 to 30…

Fractographic study of the behavior of different ceramic veneers on full coverage crowns in relation to supporting core materials

2013

Objectives: To observe porcelain veneer behavior of zirconia and metal-ceramic full coverage crowns when subjected to compression testing, comparing zirconia cores to metal cores. Study Design: The porcelain fracture surfaces of 120 full coverage crowns (60 with a metal core and 60 with a zirconia core) subjected to static load (compression) testing were analyzed. Image analysis was performed using macroscopic processing with 8x and 12x enlargement. Five samples from each group were prepared and underwent scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis in order to make a fractographic study of fracture propagation in the contact area and composition analysis in the most significant areas of the…

Microwave synthesis of yttria stabilized zirconia

2005

Yttria stabilised zirconia (YSZ) nanocrystals, with a mean size between 5 and 10 nm, were prepared by microwave flash synthesis. Flash synthesis was performed in alcoholic solutions of yttrium, zirconium chloride and sodium ethoxide (EtONa) using a microwave autoclave (RAMO system) specially designed by authors. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), BET adsorption technique, photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM) are used to characterized these nanoparticles. Compared with conventional synthesis, nanopowders can be produced in a short period (e.g. 10 s), both high purity and stoechiometric control a…

Influence of thermal and mechanical fatigue on the shear bond strength of different all-ceramic systems

2017

BACKGROUND To evaluate the influence of thermal and mechanical fatigue on the shear bond strength of different all-ceramic cores and veneering porcelain interfaces. MATERIAL AND METHODS All-ceramic systems tested were lithium disilicate and zirconia veneered by layering technique. Sixty specimens (n=20) were subjected to shear bond strength. Ten of them were thermal and mechanical cycled. Fracture analysis was performed with stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis was performed across core/veneer interfaces. RESULTS Thermal and mechanical cycling did not influence on bond strength. However, there was significant difference among syste…

Stabilisation of tetragonal zirconia in oxidised ZrSiN nanocomposite coatings

2004

Abstract ZrSiN coatings were deposited on steel and silicon substrates by reactive sputtering of a composite ZrSi target. The coatings were oxidised in air in the 600–750 °C temperature range. As-deposited and oxidised films were characterised by X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy. The oxidation behaviour of ZrSiN coatings was compared to that of ZrN ones. It was demonstrated that addition of silicon in the 3–5 at.% range into ZrN-based coatings promotes the onset of oxidation by nearly 100 °C. The structure of the oxide layer was strongly dependent on the film’s silicon content: monoclinic zirc…

Effect of germanium addition on the properties of reactively sputtered ZrN films

2005

For the first time, Zr-Ge-N films were deposited on silicon and steel substrates by sputtering a Zr-Ge composite target in reactive Ar-N2 mixture. The films were characterised by electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and depth-sensing indentation. The effects of the Ge content and substrate bias voltage on the films' structure, internal stress, hardness and oxidation resistance were investigated. Substrate bias strongly influenced the chemical composition of the films being observed by means of a steep decrease in the Ge content for negative bias voltages higher than -80 V. In these cases, a significant hardness improvement was registered. For -100 V bias…

Structure formation and properties of corundum ceramics based on metastable aluminium oxide doped with stabilized zirconium dioxide

2021

Abstract The work presents a successful example of the use of YSZ binary systems for production of composite ceramic materials based on θ-Al2O3 with improved physical and mechanical characteristics which was previously considered an unpromising material. It was first obtained result of extreme nature of dependence of physical and mechanical properties of Al2O3+YSZ on the concentration of YSZ (ZrO2–3mol% of Y2O3) additive. The sintering temperature was decreased on 250 °C (from 1800 to 1550 °C). The phase composition of powders and the structure of ceramics of the Al2O3 + YSZ system were investigated depending on the amount of YSZ dopant, the structure-properties relationship was established…

Alumina supported Pt(1%)/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 monolith: Remarkable stabilization of ceria–zirconia solution towards CeAlO3 formation operated by Pt under red…

2009

Abstract A structured Pt(1 wt%)/ceria–zirconia/alumina catalyst and the metal-free ceria–zirconia/alumina were prepared, by dip-coating, over a cordierite monolithic support. XRD analyses and Rietveld refinements of the structural data demonstrate that in the Pt supported catalysts ceria–zirconia is present as a Ce 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 homogeneous solid solution and that the deposition over the cordierite doesn’t produce any structural modification. Moreover no Pt sintering occurs. By comparing the XRD patterns recorded on Pt/ceria–zirconia/alumina and ceria–zirconia/alumina after three redox cycles, it results that Pt, favouring the structural reorganization of the ceria–zirconia into one cubic …
