New Energy Corridors in the Euro-Mediterranean Area: The Pivotal Role of Sicily

2018

The present paper deals with the new opportunities deriving from the interconnections of the European and North African transmission systems. In order to achieve a single international market for electricity exchanges, interconnections between networks in different countries are becoming increasingly important and Sicily, for its geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, will undoubtedly play an important role as an electrical bridge between Europe and the North Africa in the near future. The paper, presenting the actual electro-energetic context of Tunisia, reports the new important interconnection already realized in South Italy (in particular in Sicily) and describe t…

The Institutionalization of Political Risk Assessment by Chinese Multinational Firms

2021

Some researchers have claimed that Chinese firms are impervious to political risk, calling into question the institutionalization of political risk by Chinese firms. Building on resource dependence theory and the literature on non-market strategies, this study finds significant impact by ownership structure, firm scale, and the degree of internationalization on the institutionalization of political risk assessments (IPRA) by Chinese firms. As such, state-owned firms and larger firms cultivate a higher level of IPRA. We find a positive impact of a firm’s scale and scope of internationalization, but insignificant impact of depth of internationalization.

Some reflections on Fuzzy Set Theory as an Experimental Science

2014

The aim of this paper is to open a critical discussion on the claim, recently presented in the community and especially heralded by Enric Trillas, that fuzzy logic should be seen as an “experimental science”. The first interesting aspect of such remark is whether and in which way such position has consequences on the real development of the research, or if it is simply a (different) way of looking at the same phenomenon. As a consequence, we investigate the possible connection to Zadeh’s distiction between Fuzzy logic in a restricted sense and in a general sense. We shall argue that Trillas’s claim not only strongly supports the necessity for such a distinction, but provides a path of inves…

Fast spiking neural network architecture for low-cost FPGA devices

2012

Spiking Neural Networks (SNN) consist of fully interconnected computation units (neurons) based on spike processing. This type of networks resembles those found in biological systems studied by neuroscientists. This paper shows a hardware implementation for SNN. First, SNN require the inputs to be spikes, being necessary a conversion system (encoding) from digital values into spikes. For travelling spikes, each neuron interconnection is characterized by weights and delays, requiring an internal neuron processing by a Postsynaptic Potential (PSP) function and membrane potential threshold evaluation for a postsynaptic output spike generation. In order to model a real biological system by arti…

Tridiagonality, supersymmetry and non self-adjoint Hamiltonians

2019

In this paper we consider some aspects of tridiagonal, non self-adjoint, Hamiltonians and of their supersymmetric counterparts. In particular, the problem of factorization is discussed, and it is shown how the analysis of the eigenstates of these Hamiltonians produce interesting recursion formulas giving rise to biorthogonal families of vectors. Some examples are proposed, and a connection with bi-squeezed states is analyzed.

Zeno dynamics and high-temperature master equations beyond secular approximation

2013

Complete positivity of a class of maps generated by master equations derived beyond the secular approximation is discussed. The connection between such class of evolutions and physical properties of the system is analyzed in depth. It is also shown that under suitable hypotheses a Zeno dynamics can be induced because of the high temperature of the bath.

Coupled Susy, pseudo-bosons and a deformed su(1, 1) Lie algebra

2021

Abstract In a recent paper a pair of operators a and b satisfying the equations a † a = bb † + γ 1 and aa † = b † b + δ 1 , has been considered, and their nature of ladder operators has been deduced and analyzed. Here, motivated by the spreading interest in non self-adjoint operators in quantum mechanics, we extend this situation to a set of four operators, c, d, r and s, satisfying dc = rs + γ 1 and cd = sr + δ 1 , and we show that they are also ladder operators. We show their connection with biorthogonal families of vectors and with the so-called D -pseudo bosons. Some examples are discussed.

Classification of multipartite systems featuring only $|W\rangle$ and $|GHZ\rangle$ genuine entangled states

2015

In this paper we present several multipartite quantum systems featuring the same type of genuine (tripartite) entanglement. Based on a geometric interpretation of the so-called $|W\rangle$ and $|GHZ\rangle$ states we show that the classification of all multipartite systems featuring those and only those two classes of genuine entanglement can be deduced from earlier work of algebraic geometers. This classification corresponds in fact to classification of fundamental subadjoint varieties and establish a connection between those systems, well known in Quantum Information Theory and fundamental simple Lie algebras.

Mathematical aspects of intertwining operators: the role of Riesz bases

2010

In this paper we continue our analysis of intertwining relations for both self-adjoint and not self-adjoint operators. In particular, in this last situation, we discuss the connection with pseudo-hermitian quantum mechanics and the role of Riesz bases.
