Interannual variability of rainfall in the eastern horn of Africa and indicators of atmospheric circulation

Relationships between rainfall variations in the Eastern Horn of Africa, the Southern Oscillation, and the Indian Ocean temperature and pressure surface fields are studied for the period 1932–83. Rainfall data consist of stations and regional indices calculated for three selected areas experiencing quite different rainfall patterns. The results indicate significant negative correlations between northern autumn rains in Somalia and the Southern Oscillation during the same season. These rains are also negatively correlated with pressure in the Western Indian Ocean, and positively correlated in the Eastern Indian Ocean. The reverse pattern is shown with sea-surface temperature. Comparison of rainfall structures between NCEP/NCAR reanalyses and observed data over tropical Africa

A comparison is made between modelled (NCEP/NCAR reanalysis) and observed (CRC and CRU dataset) annual and monthly precipitation over tropical Africa during the period 1958–1997. The split moving-windows dissimilarity analysis (SMWDA) is used to locate abrupt changes in rainfall time series. In the NCEP reanalysis data, we identify a main abrupt shift, which occurs in 1967 and concerns more than 50% of grid points. In the observation, this shift is only found over parts of tropical North Africa. Three other NCEP abrupt shifts (1975, 1983 and 1987) in the reanalysis shown by the SMWDA, each concerning about 20% of tropical Africa, are not identified in the observation. Localized potentials in electrical impedance tomography

In this work we study localized electric potentials that have an arbitrarily high energy on some given subset of a domain and low energy on another. We show that such potentials exist for general L ∞ -conductivities in almost arbitrarily shaped subregions of a domain, as long as these regions are connected to the boundary and a unique continuation principle is satisfied. From this we deduce a simple, but new, theoretical identifiability result for the famous Calderon problem with partial data. Although there is a great deal of stationary phases having different selectivities (even practically orthogonal selectivities), these very rarely are taken as a factor to be optimized during method development. The chromatographer selects the stationary phase usually in a trial-and-error fashion (or based on the solute nature and expected interactions), and then optimizes continuous factors as the mobile phase composition, pH, temperature and flow-rate. Electroplated Indium Bumps as Thermal and Electrical Connections of NTD-Ge Sensors for the Fabrication of Microcalorimeter Arrays

We are developing a method to build arrays of Ge-based microcalorimeters for soft X-rays detection using micro-photolithographic techniques. A key element of the process is the electrical and thermal connection between the germanium sensors and the interconnection electrical tracks, that lay on a substrate acting as mechanical support and thermal sink. The geometry of the sensors, that have a square base truncated pyramid shape, makes feasible a connection through indium soldering. Averaging and optimal control of elliptic Keplerian orbits with low propulsion

This article deals with the optimal transfer of a satellite between Keplerian orbits using low propulsion. It is based on preliminary results of Geffroy [Generalisation des techniques de moyennation en controle optimal, application aux problemes de rendez-vous orbitaux a poussee faible, Ph.D. Thesis, Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, France, Octobre 1997] where the optimal trajectories are approximated using averaging techniques. The objective is to introduce the appropriate geometric framework and to complete the analysis of the averaged optimal trajectories for energy minimization, showing in particular the connection with Riemannian problems having integrable geodesics.

Timing and patterns of ENSO impacts in Africa over the last 30 years: insights from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index data.

International audience; In this study we reassess and provide a more complete picture of the timing and patterns of ENSO impacts for the whole of Africa over the three last decades. We analyse the vegetation photosynthetic activity estimated by the NOAA-AVHRR Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) rather than rainfall itself, because NDVI allows us to document the impacts at fine space and time scales. For this, the presented study aims at examining the links between contextual disconnections, from family and school, and the health of girls and boys, according to the extent and scope of the contextual disconnection and the health outcomes under consideration.
