Temperature control during Spark Plasma Sintering and application to up-scaling and complex shaping
2013
International audience; The determination and the homogeneity of the sample temperature during consolidation of powders by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) are addressed. Densifications were carried out in three different facilities differing by their constructors and their size. A structural transformation activated in a TiAl alloy was used as a marker of the sample temperature and finite element modeling were performed to evaluate the temperature at each point of the set-up. A good agreement between experimental and simulated data is exhibited. Alloys with identical microstructures were sintered and the homogeneity of the microstructure was better in the largest machines or when the sample wa…
Abstract 3463: Treatment of young children with localized medulloblastoma by chemotherapy alone: Final results of the prospective multicenter trial H…
2011
Abstract Background: This study was designed to confirm the previously observed favorable survival rates and prognostic factors in young children with non-metastatic medulloblastoma (MB) treated by postoperative chemotherapy alone. Methods: Patients diagnosed between January 2001 and December 2005 and younger than 4 years received three cycles of postoperative systemic multiagent chemotherapy and intraventricular methotrexate. In case of complete remission, treatment was terminated after two additional cycles of chemotherapy. Otherwise secondary surgery, radiotherapy and consolidation chemotherapy were recommended. Results: The 5-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) (±SE…
Synaptic Scaling Enables Dynamically Distinct Short- and Long-Term Memory Formation
2013
Memory storage in the brain relies on mechanisms acting on time scales from minutes, for long-term synaptic potentiation, to days, for memory consolidation. During such processes, neural circuits distinguish synapses relevant for forming a long-term storage, which are consolidated, from synapses of short-term storage, which fade. How time scale integration and synaptic differentiation is simultaneously achieved remains unclear. Here we show that synaptic scaling – a slow process usually associated with the maintenance of activity homeostasis – combined with synaptic plasticity may simultaneously achieve both, thereby providing a natural separation of short- from long-term storage. The inter…
Nanostructures materials for protection and consolidation of ancient structures
2014
The preservation and appreciation of the built cultural heritage is of particular interest, through researches and studies on innovative technologies. As evidenced by the good results obtained in some interventions both at national and international level, activities for the conservation of cultural heritage must be the result of synergies and collaboration of interdisciplinary groups, science and knowledge: architecture, engineering, technology, sociology, economics, urban planning, legislation must be managed and planned to work together. The theme of protection and consolidation of ancient structures, applying non-traditional technologies, requires a comprehensive overview of strategies …
What determines the duration of a fiscal consolidation program?
2013
This paper assesses the determinants of the length of fiscal consolidation using annual data for 17 industrial countries over the period 1978-2009. Relying on a narrative approach to identify fiscal consolidation episodes, we show that fiscal variables (such as the budget deficit and the level of public debt) and economic factors (such as the degree of openness, the inflation rate, the interest rate and per capita GDP) are crucial for the fiscal consolidation process. Additionally, we employ duration analysis over a set of consolidation spells and find that, as time goes by, the likelihood of a fiscal consolidation ending is higher. However, the hazard function is not monotonic: indeed, it …
Compatibility, effectiveness and susceptibility to degradation of alkoxysilane-based consolidation treatments on a carbonate stone
2021
Abstract Alkoxysilane-based consolidation treatment are commonly employed in restoration and conservation works of Cultural Heritage buildings. However, their poor affinity to carbonate stones is well-known. In this paper, we evaluate three consolidant treatments (two of them modified to incorporate hydrophobic or photocatalytic properties), formulated to circumvent this drawback and their cracking during drying, through a surfactant-assisted synthesis. The consolidants were applied on Noto stone, a biocalcarenite (~95% CaCO3 ) employed in numerous Cultural Heritage buildings of Southern Italy. A comprehensive validation of the three consolidants, compared to a commercial TEOS based consoli…
Conventional induction and post-remission therapy in APL: have we arrived?
2014
Since the introduction of all-trans-retinoic acid, the use of this molecularly targeted treatment in combination with anthracycline-based chemotherapy has completely changed the prognosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) turning it into the most curable acute myeloid leukemia. Also, the use of risk-adapted protocols has optimized the drug combination and the most appropriate dose intensity for each subset of patients classified according to both risk of relapse and vulnerability to drug toxicity. Recent developments have included the investigation of the role of arsenic trioxide (ATO) as front-line treatment after its success in relapsed APL, both to minimize or even omit the use of cy…

Measurable Residual Disease by Next-Generation Flow Cytometry in Multiple Myeloma.
2020
[Purpose] Assessing measurable residual disease (MRD) has become standard with many tumors, but the clinical meaning of MRD in multiple myeloma (MM) remains uncertain, particularly when assessed by next-generation flow (NGF) cytometry. Thus, we aimed to determine the applicability and sensitivity of the flow MRD-negative criterion defined by the International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG).
