A novel approach to enhance mechanical properties during recycling of aluminum alloy scrap through friction stir consolidation

2021

Solid state recycling (SSR) is a new approach for making metals recycling more efficient with respect to remelting-based approaches. Friction stir consolidation (FSC) is a new solid-state process that is employed to recycle metallic scraps. Until now, a single-step FSC process was applied to recycled metal chips. During the single-step approach, critical processes parameters, especially processing time and rotational speed, are considered vital to control the quality and mechanical properties of the billet. However, the effectiveness of process parameters is highly restricted by challenging masses of recycling chips and machine competency. The present study first highlights the issues of th…

Introduction: Continuities, Dislocations and Transformations: 50 Years of Independence in Africa

2010

Many sub-Saharan African countries celebrated 50 years of political independence in 2010. This presented an opportunity for scholars, politicians and journalists, both within and outside of Africa, to take stock. The situation on the African continent has changed fundamentally since 1960. Brief general analyses and reviews can scarcely do justice to the complexity of this development process. The processes of consolidation, differentiation and transformation that have caused African societies today to become significantly more complex than they were at the time of independence are simply too multifaceted. Most of the journalistic attempts to take stock of these developments in recent years …

From Complement to Motor: The Changing Role of Leisure and Tourism in Local Development Strategies. The Case of the Recovery and Valorisation of Cult…

2012

In the Fordist society, the productive activity focused development strategies, considering the role of leisure and tourism as “complementary” productive activities. The consolidation of post-productivism since the decade of 1990s has caused profound changes in individual and collective values and priorities. These have seen the introduction of a radically different conception about the role of leisure and tourism in the vital programming and, consequently, in the strategies of companies, organisations and governments. This paper provides a discussion of the principles of local development and the, more and more, central function of leisure and tourism in regional development strategies, th…

Nanotechnology for Cultural Heritage

2014

The conservation science is one of the most complex topics in the materials science as it requires interdisciplinary expertise ranging from the architecture, the technology of materials to the advanced analytical and physical chemistry. However, the recent development has shown that the complex tasks of the conservation of the cultural heritage can be solved very effectively using novel nanomaterials and nanotechnology methods.

Case studies - Research and technological solutions to prevent sand production in the gas wells from the Getic Depression

2021

A frequent challenge encountered in the exploitation of mature gas fields located in the Getic Depression is sand production. Causes of sand production are mainly related to degree of rock consolidation, lithology, increasing water production and production rates. The effects of sand production are multiple such us low productivity of the gas wells, accumulation into the surface equipment, erosion of downhole and surface equipment, plugging the perforation zone and casing damage. The current paper will address the sand production- challenges and new perspectives in remedial work of wells which are producing from gas reservoirs located in Getic Depression. The article presents through some c…

Exploring Organized Interests in Post-Communist Policy-Making: The "Missing Link"

2021

This book examines organized interests in post-communist Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), providing incisive analyses in three critically important policy areas - healthcare, higher education and energy. The four countries surveyed – Poland, Hungary, Slovenia and the Czech Republic – afford rich diversity offering broad empirical material available for cross-country and cross-policy comparative analyses. Featuring interdisciplinary research, the book draws together recent developments in the evolution of post-communist advocacy organizations, their population ecology dynamics, interest intermediation, the influence of organized interests and their (bottom-up and top-down) Europeanization. …

Hydro-mechanical behaviour of shallow Opalinus Clay shale

2019

In Switzerland, Opalinus Clay shale has been selected as the host formation for radioactive waste disposal. The minimum required depth of the repository is related to the long-lasting isolation required for the disposal (1 million years). During this period, possible erosion scenarios affecting the repository need to be analysed. Opalinus Clay from shallow depths (< 70 m) was sourced from a borehole in Northern Switzerland, where the formation was affected by a considerable exhumation process. This work aims to investigate the impact of the mentioned phenomenon on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of Opalinus Clay through one-dimensional consolidation and permeability measurements. Laboratory …

SPS-assisted preparation of the Magnéli phase WO2.90 for thermoelectric applications

2013

We describe the preparation and simultaneous consolidation of WO2.90 by spark plasma sintering (SPS). SPS allows for the direct manufacturing of large amounts of consolidated material. Synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction indicates that the material is single phase. Microstructure analysis indicates that the pellet is fully dense, allowing high-temperature thermoelectric properties to be reliably measured. The as-prepared samples of WO2.90 reach a ZT of 0.1 at 1100 K.

Time-resolved XRD experiments for a fine description of mechanisms induced during reactive sintering

2005

The control of Mechanically Activated Field Activated Pressure Assisted Synthesis hereafter called the MAFAPAS process is the main objective to be achieved for producing nanostructure materials with a controlled consolidation level. Consequently, it was essential to develop characterization tools "in situ" such as the Time Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXRD), with an X-ray synchrotron beam (H10, LURE Orsay) coupled to an infrared thermography to study simultaneously structural transformations and thermal evolutions. From the 2003 experiments, we took the opportunity to modify the sample-holder in order to reproduce the better synthesis conditions of the MAFAPAS process, but without the conso…

Histological evaluation of the effect of low-level laser on distraction osteogenesis in rabbit mandibles

2009

Objectives: This study evaluated the action of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on the percentage of newly formed bone in rabbit mandibles that underwent distraction osteogenesis (DO). Study design: Ten rabbits underwent bone lengthening according to the following protocol: Latency ? 3 days; Activation ? 7 days 0.7 mm/d; and Consolidation ? 10 days. The control group was composed of 4 rabbits. The experimental group, composed of 6 rabbits, received infrared GaAlAs LLLT (?=830 nm, P=40 mW) according to the following protocol: point dose of 10 J/cm2 applied directly on the bone site that underwent DO during bone consolidation at 48-hour intervals. Results: The percentage of newly formed bone wa…
