Plastic and cosmetic surgery of the male breast

2020

The thorax has a fundamental role in the aesthetic of the male body: Congenital or acquired alterations are experienced as extremely frustrating clinical situations. Most breast surgery texts briefly mention gynecomastia, but no text comprehensively addresses the male breast and thorax, including reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and surgery in transgender patients. This gap is now thoroughly filled by Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery of the Male Breast: After introducing principles of anatomy and aesthetics for the male thorax, the first part focusses on the main congenital malformations and their treatment; the main benign acquired pathologies and their treatment (including an ample section…

CMB spectral distortions in generic two-field models

2017

We investigate the CMB $\mu$ distortion in models where two uncorrelated sources contribute to primordial perturbations. We parameterise each source by an amplitude, tilt, running and running of the running. We perform a detailed analysis of the distribution signal as function of the model parameters, highlighting the differences compared to single-source models. As a specific example, we also investigate the mixed inflaton-curvaton scenario. We find that the $\mu$ distortion could efficiently break degeneracies of curvaton parameters especially when combined with future sensitivity of probing the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. For example, assuming bounds $\mu < 0.5 \times 10^{-8}$ and $r<0.0…

Testing theories of Gravity and Supergravity with inflation and observations of the cosmic microwave background

2016

Many extensions of Einstein's theory of gravity have been studied and proposed with various motivations like the quest for a quantum theory of gravity to extensions of anomalies in observations at the solar system, galactic and cosmological scales. These extensions include adding higher powers of Ricci curvature $R$, coupling the Ricci curvature with scalar fields and generalized functions of $R$. In addition when viewed from the perspective of Supergravity (SUGRA) many of these theories may originate from the same SUGRA theory interpreted in different frames. SUGRA therefore serves as a good framework for organizing and generalizing theories of gravity beyond General Relativity. All these …

Shining primordial black holes

2021

We study the well-motivated mixed dark matter (DM) scenario composed of a dominant thermal WIMP, highlighting the case of $SU(2)_L$ triplet fermion "winos", with a small fraction of primordial black holes (PBHs). After the wino kinetic decoupling, the DM particles are captured by PBHs leading to the presence of PBHs with dark minihalos in the Milky Way today. The strongest constraints for the wino DM come from the production of narrow line gamma rays from wino annihilation in the Galactic Center. We analyse in detail the viability of the mixed wino DM scenario, and determine the constraints on the fraction of DM in PBHs assuming a cored halo profile in the Milky Way. We show that already wi…

In the realm of the Hubble tension—a review of solutions

2021

The $\Lambda$CDM model provides a good fit to a large span of cosmological data but harbors areas of phenomenology. With the improvement of the number and the accuracy of observations, discrepancies among key cosmological parameters of the model have emerged. The most statistically significant tension is the $4-6\sigma$ disagreement between predictions of the Hubble constant $H_0$ by early time probes with $\Lambda$CDM model, and a number of late time, model-independent determinations of $H_0$ from local measurements of distances and redshifts. The high precision and consistency of the data at both ends present strong challenges to the possible solution space and demand a hypothesis with en…

The Will to Order: In Conversation with Mariano Croce and Marco Goldoni on Costantino Mortati’s Account of the Legal Order and the Material Constitut…

2021

In this article, taking my cue from the insightful analyses contained in the book The Legacy of Pluralism, by Mariano Croce and Marco Goldoni, I reconstruct in outline Costantino Mortati’s conceptions of the law as a legal order and of the material constitution. I focus on the problems pointed out by Croce and Goldoni: the emergence of legal normativity, the problem of radical pluralism, and the role of jurists vis-à-vis politics. In sections II, III, and IV, I describe the general framework that, however much detailed and adjusted over time, Mortati adamantly maintained from his earlier works in the 1930s to his last ones in the mid-1970s. In section V, I describe the significant shifts th…

Costituzionalismo ed esperienze costituzionali in Iran

2015

The purpose of this study is to analyse to what extent the Shiite jurisprudence has influenced the Iranian constitutional system. This study will provide an outline of the evolution of the form of government f…

Electronic Excitation Energy Transfer in Multichromophoric Assemblies: A Single Molecule Insight

2009

In recent years, single molecule spectroscopy has provided novel insights into the fundamentals of electronic excitation energy transfer in molecular aggregates. In order of increasing structural complexity, we have studied simple molecular dimers and multichromophoric dendrimers. It will be shown that the combination of frequency-selective single molecule spectroscopy and confocal fluorescence microscopy at 1.4 K is a unique tool to study energy transfer processes in these systems. In particular, from the line widths of single molecule excitation spectra, rate constants of energy transfer can be deduced directly. A detailed analysis shows that, for several cases, the mechanism of energy tr…

Importance of Triples Contributions to NMR Spin–Spin Coupling Constants Computed at the CC3 and CCSDT Levels

2016

We present the first analytical implementation of CC3 second derivatives using the spin-unrestricted approach. This allows, for the first time, the calculation of nuclear spin–spin coupling constants (SSCC) relevant to NMR spectroscopy at the CC3 level of theory in a fully analytical manner. CC3 results for the SSCCs of a number of small molecules and their fluorine substituted derivatives are compared with the corresponding coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) results obtained using specialized basis sets. For one-bond couplings the change when going from CCSD to CC3 is typically 1–3%, but much higher corrections were found for 1JCN in FCN, 15.7%, and 1JOF in OF2, 6.4%. The changes v…
