Vulnerability of a Damaged Bridge Abutment in a Seismic Area

2018

The case of the abutment of a motorway urban viaduct damaged by human intervention is presented. Built in the 1960s, it lies in a critical seismic area and the human-induced damage involved the elements of the abutment foundation. The structure is geometrically complex and the evaluations of its structural safety were carried out by applying Italian codes from different times: those concerning the time of construction, those of a recent past (1996), and those of the present (2008), inspired by Eurocodes. A comparison between the safety checks performed and the requirements of all these codes is presented and discussed, especially regarding safety coefficients after the damage was done. Two …

Limit on the production of a light vector gauge boson in $\phi $ mesondecays with the KLOE detector

2012

We present a new limit on the production of a light dark-force mediator with the KLOE detector at DAPHNE. This boson, called U, has been searched for in the decay phi --> eta U, U --> e+ e-, analyzing the decay eta --> pi0 pi0 pi0 in a data sample of 1.7 fb-1. No structures are observed in the e+e- invariant mass distribution over the background. This search is combined with a previous result obtained from the decay eta --> pi+ pi- pi0, increasing the sensitivity. We set an upper limit at 90% C.L. on the ratio between the U boson coupling constant and the fine structure constant of alpha'/alpha < 1.7x10^-5 for 30<M_U<400 MeV and alpha'/alpha < 8x10^-6 for the sub-region 50<M_U<210 MeV. This…

EEG data acquisition system based on asynchronous sigma-delta modulator

2012

This paper describes a multichannel mobile EEG data acquisition system that consists of on-head sensors with built in electroencephalogram (EEG) signal amplifier, asynchronous sigma-delta modulator (ASDM) for analog to digital conversion and 434MHz On-Off keying (OOK) wireless data transmitter. A prototype circuit has been designed and fabricated in a 11×16mm cylinder package. After receiving the signal, appropriate processing is applied in order to reconstruct the brain wave signals.

Applying a Data Quality Model to Experiments in Software Engineering

2014

Data collection and analysis are key artifacts in any software engineering experiment. However, these data might contain errors. We propose a Data Quality model specific to data obtained from software engineering experiments, which provides a framework for analyzing and improving these data. We apply the model to two controlled experiments, which results in the discovery of data quality problems that need to be addressed. We conclude that data quality issues have to be considered before obtaining the experimental results.

A Special Issue on Advances in Machine Learning for Remote Sensing and Geosciences [From the Guest Editors]

2016

Machine learning has become a standard paradigm for the analysis of remote sensing and geoscience data at both local and global scales. In the upcoming years, with the advent of new satellite constellations, machine learning will have a fundamental role in processing large and heterogeneous data sources. Machine learning will move from mere statistical data processing to actual learning, understanding, and knowledge extraction. The ambitious goal is to provide responses to the challenging scientific questions about the earth system. This special issue aims at providing an updated, refreshing view of current developments in the field. For this special issue, we have collected five articles t…

Algorithms for Image Reconstruction

2010

Three-dimensional (3D) imaging is becoming one of the most important applications of radioactive materials in medicine. It offers good spatial resolution, a 3D insight into the human body, and a high sensitivity in the picomolar range because markers for biological processes can be detected well when labeled with radioactive materials. In addition, the technical equipment has undergone many technological achievements. This is true for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), and X-ray computed tomography (CT), which is often used in connection with the nuclear medical imaging systems, as also described in chapter 5 about sources in nuclear medi…

Prototype-based learning on concept-drifting data streams

2014

Data stream mining has gained growing attentions due to its wide emerging applications such as target marketing, email filtering and network intrusion detection. In this paper, we propose a prototype-based classification model for evolving data streams, called SyncStream, which dynamically models time-changing concepts and makes predictions in a local fashion. Instead of learning a single model on a sliding window or ensemble learning, SyncStream captures evolving concepts by dynamically maintaining a set of prototypes in a new data structure called the P-tree. The prototypes are obtained by error-driven representativeness learning and synchronization-inspired constrained clustering. To ide…

Comprehensive System for Systematic Case-Driven Software Reuse

2010

Reuse of software artifacts (blueprints and code) is normally associated with organising a systematic reuse framework most often constructed for a specific problem domain. In this paper we present a system (language, tool, reuse process) where software reuse is based on building and retrieving of so-called software cases (large compound artifacts) that can be reused between domains. The system is opportunistic in that software cases result from usual (non-reuse oriented) activities where also semantic information is added. This information is used to support regular development but may serve later to retrieve software cases. Having this common semantic basis, we can organise a systematic cr…

Retrieving Open Source Software Licenses

2006

Open Source Software maintenance and reuse require identifying and comprehending the applied software licenses. This paper first characterizes software maintenance, and open source software (OSS) reuse which are particularly relevant in this context. The information needs of maintainers and reusers can be supported by reverse engineering tools at different information retrieval levels. The paper presents an automated license retrieval approach called ASLA. User needs, system architecture, tool features, and tool evaluation are presented. The implemented tool features support identifying source file dependencies and licenses in source files, and adding new license templates for identifying l…
