The reduction mechanism of the CO group.

2001

A detailed study of the electrochemical reduction of benzil in aqueous medium between H0=−5 and pH 11 is presented. A global 2e−, 3H+ or 2e−, 2H+ surface reaction leads to cis and trans endiols. Analysis, using the theory of the square schemes with protonations at equilibrium, shows that in all the pH range the reaction is controlled by the second electron uptake, the paths being successively H+, e− and e−, H+. The electrochemical reaction is followed by surface isomerizations whose rate constants vary from 7 to 200 s−1 for the trans/cis and from 1 to 2000 s−1 for the cis/trans transformations.

On the existence of weak solution to the coupled fluid-structure interaction problem for non-Newtonian shear-dependent fluid

2016

We study the existence of weak solution for unsteady fluid-structure interaction problem for shear-thickening flow. The time dependent domain has at one part a flexible elastic wall. The evolution of fluid domain is governed by the generalized string equation with action of the fluid forces. The power-law viscosity model is applied to describe shear-dependent non-Newtonian fluids.

An interface model for analysis of deformation behaviour of discontinuities

1996

An interface constitutive model is presented accounting for slip and sliding effects and also for dilatancy phenomena. The microslip effects are described by considering spherical asperity interaction with variation of contact area and generation of progressive or reverse slip zones. The incremental constitutive equations are derived with proper memory rules accounting for generation and annihilation of particular slip zones during the process of variable loading. It is further assumed that sliding of spherical contacts occurs along large asperities whose slope varies due to the wear process. The predicted shear and dilatancy curves are shown to provide close quantitative simulation of avai…

Dependence of the Lattice Parameter of Magnesium Oxide on Crystallite Size

1966

Lattice parameters were measured on MgO specimens prepared in air between 450° and 1200°C. The lattice parameter, a, decreases with increase in preparation temperature, Tp, and with increase in crystallite size. A hydroxide layer is present on the MgO particles. If MgO is prepared in vacuum, a increases as Tp increases and as crystallite size, D, increases. It is concluded that a dilatant volume stress is imposed by the hydroxide layer. It is also shown that the oxide surface reactivity toward water is linked to the deviation from perfect order ensuing from low preparation temperatures.

Analytical prediction of ultimate moment and curvature of RC rectangular sections in compression

2013

This paper presents closed form expressions linking the ultimate bearing capacity to the ultimate curvature of rectangular RC sections subjected to axial load and bending moment acting in one of the two symmetry planes of the section. With respect to possible simplified formulations the following effects are also considered: confinement of the concrete, hardening of the longitudinal reinforcement, and presence of reinforcing bars distributed orthogonally to the neutral axis. The formulation is proposed in dimensional terms after a preliminary definition of the geometrical and mechanical parameters governing the structural response of the class of sections considered. The analytical expressi…

Electron paramagnetic resonance study of exchange coupled Ce3+ ions in Lu2SiO5 single crystal scintillator

2016

Abstract The Ce 3+ ions incorporation inside lutetium oxyorthosilicate (Lu 2 SiO 5 ) single crystals was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance. Already known Ce1 and Ce2 centers originating from the lattice peculiarity allowing two lutetium sites coordinated by different number of the oxygen ions were detected. Remarkably, for the Ce2 center, the determined g 2 tensor is asymmetric and could not be diagonalized as compared to the Ce1 center, for which the three principal values and corresponding axes orientation have been determined and reported previously. Besides, the much weaker resonance lines found in spectra close to those coming from the Ce1 and Ce2, and following them under cry…

Diquark-diquark correlations in theS01ΛΛpotential

2005

We derive a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ potential from a chiral constituent quark model that has been successful in describing one, two, and three nonstrange baryon systems. The resulting interaction at low energy is attractive at all distances due to the $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ exchange term. The attraction allows for a slightly bound state just below the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ threshold. No short-range repulsive core is found. We extract the diquark-diquark contribution that turns out to be the most attractive and probable at small distances. At large distances the asymptotic behavior of the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction provides a…

Elliptic equations having a singular quadratic gradient term and a changing sign datum

2012

In this paper we study a singular elliptic problem whose model is \begin{eqnarray*} - \Delta u= \frac{|\nabla u|^2}{|u|^\theta}+f(x), in \Omega\\ u = 0, on \partial \Omega; \end{eqnarray*} where $\theta\in (0,1)$ and $f \in L^m (\Omega)$, with $m\geq \frac{N}{2}$. We do not assume any sign condition on the lower order term, nor assume the datum $f$ has a constant sign. We carefully define the meaning of solution to this problem giving sense to the gradient term where $u=0$, and prove the existence of such a solution. We also discuss related questions as the existence of solutions when the datum $f$ is less regular or the boundedness of the solutions when the datum $f \in L^m (\Omega)$ with …
