Force Variations on Heave Compensating System for Ultra-Deepwater Drilling Risers

This paper discusses modeling aspects related to dynamic analysis of deep water drilling risers. These risers must have a heave compensator that maintains a near constant tension in the riser independent on platform motions. Traditional riser analysis will apply constant top tension or a simple parametric model that may give approximate tension variation. Influence of MV distribution networks structure on voltage dips propagation

In this paper, transient behaviour due to voltage dips which occur in electric power MV distribution networks as a consequence of a fault by using an improved ATP circuit-breaker model are reported. The circuit-breaker is simulated by using a tool written in MODELS language and by arranging a time-variable differential arc-conductance based on the combination of Mayr's and Cassie's equations. An accurate analysis of the transient subsequent to circuit-breaker operation, in different fault conditions, are reported in order to show how the amplitude of the dip depends on the fault type, location and network structure.

Interaction between Longitudinal Shear and Transverse Bending in Prestressed Concrete Box Girders

In box girder bridges, the quantity and distribution of reinforcement to be put in concrete elements of sections can be evaluated only by considering the deformation of the cross section in addition to the longitudinal analysis of the static scheme, establishing the entire state of stress of box sections. This leads to a need to evaluate the interaction between internal forces obtained by the global analysis and the ones obtained by the local analysis of the cross sections. The frame effect implies the elastic deformation of slabs and webs, whereas eccentrically applied loads lead to cross-section distortion with the loss of the box shape. ABSTRACTBuilt in the first half of the 13th century on behalf of the Emperor Frederick II, the Maniace Castle of Siracusa focuses its enigma in the hypostyle hall (which was composed of 25 quadripartite rib vaults) and the design criteria adopted for its implementation. The Bell-Tower Facade: An Aseismic Device in Sicily Between the 12th and 18th Centuries

Imposing tower facades with belfries in the last order were built in Sicily Italy, from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque period. Until the 16th century, this model, which was inspired by northern European examples, also had a parallelepiped forepart leaning against the facade, working as containment for the pressure imparted by the inner longitudinal arches on the front, and amplified in case of earthquakes. The lacking static efficiency of these early structures is demonstrated by collapses during the strong earthquakes that hit the island in the modern age. Cogeneration plant in a pasta factory: Energy saving and environmental benefit

Abstract Italy produces approximately 4,520,000 tons of pasta annually, which is about 67% of its total productive potential. As factories need electric and thermal energy simultaneously, combined heat and power (CHP) systems are the most suitable. This paper describes a feasibility study of a CHP plant in a pasta factory in Italy while analyzing energy saving and environmental benefits. Commercially available CHP systems suitable for the power range of energy demand in pasta production use reciprocating engines or gas turbines. A Non-Invasive Thermal Drift Compensation Technique Applied to a Spin-Valve Magnetoresistive Current Sensor

A compensation method for the sensitivity drift of a magnetoresistive (MR) Wheatstone bridge current sensor is proposed. The technique was carried out by placing a ruthenium temperature sensor and the MR sensor to be compensated inside a generalized impedance converter circuit (GIC). No internal modification of the sensor bridge arms is required so that the circuit is capable of compensating practical industrial sensors.
