Relation between quasirigidity andL-rigidity in space-times of constant curvature and weak fields

1997

The relation between quasirigidity andL-rigidity in space-times of constant nonzero curvature and in space-times with small curvature (weak fields) is studied. The covariant expansion of bitensors about a point is considered. We obtain an increase in the order of magnitude, underL-rigidity conditions, of the rate of change with respect to a comoving orthonormal frame of the linear momentum, angular momentum, and reduced multipole moments of the energy-momentum tensor. Thus,L-rigidity leads to quasirigidity in such space-times.

Effects of physico-chemical parameters of a model wine on the binding of γ-decalactone on bovine serum albumin

1995

Abstract To understand the effect of temperature, pH and the composition of alcoholic beverages in flavour-protein interactions, the binding of γ-decalactone to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated using the equilibrium dialysis method. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the affinity of aroma compound for BSA is higher at 10 °C than at 20 and 30 °C, while the number of binding sites (n = 6–7) is not modified at the three temperatures. pH did not have any appreciable effect on flavour binding in the presence of ethanol, but it was observed that a decrease of 1.8 pH unit reduces binding by 40% in its absence. The presence of ethanol has no effect on the number of binding sites and on…

A comparative account of quantum dynamics of the H+ + H2 reaction at low temperature on two different potential energy surfaces

2014

Rotationally resolved reaction probabilities, integral cross sections, and rate constant for the H+ + H2 (v = 0, j = 0 or 1) → H2 (v′ = 0, j′) + H + reaction are calculated using a time-independent quantum mechanical method and the potential energy surface of Kamisaka et al. [J. Chem. Phys.116, 654 (2002)] (say KBNN PES). All partial wave contributions of the total angular momentum, J, are included to obtain converged cross sections at low collision energies and rate constants at low temperatures. In order to test the accuracy of the KBNN PES, the results obtained here are compared with those obtained in our earlier work [P. Honvault et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett.107, 023201 (2011)] using the ac…

Estimation of peak capacity based on peak simulation.

2018

Peak capacity (PC) is a key concept in chromatographic analysis, nowadays of great importance for characterising complex separations as a criterion to find the most promising conditions. A theoretical expression for PC estimation can be easily deduced in isocratic elution, provided that the column plate count is assumed constant for all analytes. In gradient elution, the complex dependence of peak width with the gradient program implies that an integral equation has to be solved, which is only possible in a limited number of situations. In 2005, Uwe Neue developed a comprehensive theory for the calculation of PC in gradient elution, which is only valid for certain situations: single linear …

Peak dispersion in gradient elution: An insight based on the plate model.

2020

Gradient elution in liquid chromatography reduces the analysis time, improves the efficiency and increases the peak capacity. The study of this chromatographic mode has been based mainly on kinetic dispersion models. The plate model has been applied to a lesser extent, despite being the basis for the concepts of plate height and chromatographic efficiency. In this work, a general equation describing peak dispersion in HPLC gradient elution is derived from the plate model. This equation is studied and validated for three types of gradients: (i) a reference gradient without ramp in which the retention factor varies with time identically throughout the column, (ii) a gradient of stationary pha…

In-process tool rotational speed variation with constant heat input in friction stir welding of AZ31 sheets with variable thickness

2017

In the present work, friction stir welding experiments on AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets, characterized by a variable thickness along the welding line, were carried out. The approach adapted during welding consisted in maintaining constant the heat input to the joint. To this purpose, the rotational speed of the pin tool was increased with decreasing thickness and decreased with increasing thickness in order to obtain the same temperatures during welding. The amount by which the rotational speed was changed as a function of the sheet thickness was defined on the basis of the results given by FEM simulations of the FSW process. Finally, the effect of the in-process variation of the tool rotatio…

Dynamics of Polymer Melts above the Glass Transition:  Monte Carlo Studies of the Bond Fluctuation Model

1997

The bond fluctuation model on the simple cubic lattice with a bond-length dependent potential energy favoring long bonds exhibits a glassy freezing in as the temperature is lowered, many properties being qualitatively similar to experiment. The present paper studies the dynamical properties of the model (as they result from the random hopping algorithm), using configurations of undercooled polymer melts that have been carefully equilibrated by the slithering snake algorithm. In this way quantitatively reliable data can be obtained for distinctly lower temperatures than in the previous work on the dynamics of this model that used the random hopping algorithm for equilibration as well. If var…

Large 256-Pixel X-ray Transition-Edge Sensor Arrays With Mo/TiW/Cu Trilayers

2015

We describe the fabrication and electrical characterization of 256-pixel X-ray transition-edge sensor (TES) arrays intended for materials analysis applications. The processing is done on 6-in wafers, providing capabilities on a commercial scale. TES films were novel proximity coupled Mo/TiW/Cu trilayers, where the thin TiW layer in between aims to improve the stability of the devices by preventing unwanted effects such as Mo/Cu interdiffusion. The absorber elements were electrodeposited gold of thickness 2 μm. The single-pixel design discussed here is the so-called Corbino geometry. Most design goals were successfully met, such as the critical temperature, thermal time constant, and transit…
